The worst part is, these things are clearly driving in the U.S. and by the landscape, I'd have to say on the I-15 somewhere between Barstow, CA and Las Vegas, NV. :banghead:

Because we don't have the fuel. The clean diesel that is required by these engines will not fully filter into the US market until next year. You put high sulfer diesel into the new engines and they will have all kinds of problems.

On the PLUS side, once low sulfer fuels are common, the US could switch to a more sour crude oil for diesel production as the higher sulfer content will no longer be an issue because a step alrady has to be in place to remove sulfer. We could see Diesel prices drop below that of gasoline as the light sweet crude needed for gasoline production is the expensive stuff. The heavier sour crudes are a lot more plentiful and cheaper, and heating oil and diesel is easier to refine from that stock.

So what is the deal with that ridiculously long bumper? Are the safety standards a lot higher over there?

Hey CJ2a, thanks for the "why don't we have diesel Jeeps in the U.S. 101" :)

Hey caleb, yes, the highway and pedestrian collision standards are much higher there.

EXACTLY!! And, I should point out that by the look of the landscape, they are somewhere between California and Nevada. That's what makes me so man - I want one!! :banghead:

JP magazine had an interesting take on the diesel. They brought up that the new "Blue-tec" 3.0 Mercedes diesel that's going in the 2007 Grand Cherokee's in the U.S. market is not any cleaner than the Liberty's now non-existent 2.8 CRD....... just that the emission standards for vehicles with a GVWR over 6,000 lbs. is less stringent.

They also mention that the Unlimited JK has a GVWR of 6,050 lbs. I would guess that a couple of factors will come into play for the 2008 model year and we will see a diesel Unlimited:
1) Previously mentioned low-sulphur fuels
2) Product cycle..... Jeep has a hit with the new JK, they could put mostly any motor in it and still sell well for '07........ now, for '08 they bring in a new diesel or the 4.7 V8 and they have another year of strong sales.

Just my $.02, I drove a 6-speed JK Unlimited the other day, and the power seems good, definitely felt smoother/better than any of my TJ/4.0/Manuals I've owned............ but how cool would the diesel or the 4.7 V8 be:cool:

there's actually a pretty big diesel market here in canada, and diesel itself fairly readily available. I really hope they think about bringing the crd to canadian soil.

Diesel will happen !! 2007 is a real shakedown year for diesel as the fuel is changing to ULSD (ultra low sulfur diesel) and manufacturers are adding DPFs (diesel particulate filters) and a form of EGR to the exhaust chain. ;)

well i guess the question is more of "when are crds going to be available" then.

Maybe I missed it but is the CRD going to be the 3.0 V6 or the 2.8 I-4 from the Liberty? The Jeep press releases talk about the 2.8 being used for export Jk's.

I'm extremely interested in getting a CRD in a Wrangler. Even if I have to swap one into my existing Wrangler to run BioDiesel and get better mpg.
I find the 2.8 vs. 3.0 emissions comments very interesting. I'll have to check into that more.
I think I could get any of them to pass the emissions if I put the BlueTec ureasystem on it, where the heck would I find those parts?

I could see this turning into one of those "Cost-Way-More-Than-I'll-Ever-Save" projects.

The mpg winner is the 2.8L 4 cylinder, and then I could tweak it for more power.

On the other hand the 3.0L V6 is a Mercedes diesel and will last longer than me! It's quieter, more powerful, and must be a direct bolt-on for the BlueTec parts.

I especially like the idea that the Unlimited's are rated for over 6000 bls which means the EPA emissions requirements are less ridiculous. :bleh:

Oh this could happen... hmmmmm

The 2.8 in the "import wranglers" (from my view) are different from the libertys. E.g., they have another injection system which uses the newest piezo technology. This means more and more precise injections per burning cycle.:yup:

This is good for everything making the diesel better.

Look at the licence plate, there are from Michigan!

Look closer, they are Manufacturers plates from Michigan. Probably some test engineers. Nice touch with the makeshift "diesel" label, and the "It's a Jeep thing" sticker!

BTW, I saw a lifted CRD Rubicon on my recent business trip to France. It surprised the heck out of me, since France is filled with tiny, fuel efficient cars! I'll try to post pics sometime (I'm a new poster here).

to OP, WHY DIDN'T YOU FOLLOW THEM!? (if that was you taking the pics). and i hope the diesel sounds like a diesel :) and shit, if prices drop below gas. they will make a killing on these cars.

I call "BOOTY!" on the fact that we can't get these CRDs yet...but if they're still shaking down the technology, I guess you can't blame them. All in due time.
Eddie, I want one too, dog...I want one too! :yup:

What ARE we doing on a thread from 2006:crazyeyes:??
Anyway, Diesel Rubicons are made with manual and with auto. Mine's auto and it's a better buy, as the manuals are geared so highly they can't reach their top speed. Furthermore, the manual gearbox is weaker and can't shouldn't be tuned.

Mumble... Top Speed... Mumble... I drove my Rubi up to 175 km/h :donttell: (GPS verified) ONCE and will never do it again! :no2:
At this speed:

1- Steering: SUCKS big time
2- Brakes: Become non exisant
3- Noise: CAN YOU HEAR MEEEEE?

No thanks, I'm fine with 120-130 km/h on highways (hate 'em anyhow) in my Jeep...
