Has anyone come up with a good place on a JK 4dr to hide the registration and insurance card? I do not like to leave such paperwork in the glove compartment (for gloves?) but can't decide where on this model.
I am surprised that my JK does not have a lockable hood. Guess I will have to buy locks for this one also having done so for the 2005 Unlimited.

I did this
hidden compartment
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thought i share this with the group.I made a fake bottom for the center console out of 22 ga sheet metal(2 90 deg bends for legs)and covered it with some black vinyl.so when dropped in to place you have 1 1/4 inch of space under the fake bottom to hide something.the fake bottom fits very tight and is really hard to remove with out tools and is almost invisible when looking at the bottom of the console.so for easy removal i bought a rare earth magnet(1/2" x 1/2") that i keep else were in the jeep(kinda like a key for a lock that no one can see)so when one needs to remove the fake bottom just put your magnet on top of the panel and lift.

Not a bad idea you should do a writeup with pictures on it.
That said keep in mind documentation should be easy to get at if pulled over. I run the risk and take the cnahce putting mine in my locked glovebox. Tuffy makes security boxes for the center console and glove box and I am sure a sponsor has them. I do not under any circumstances recoment you put anythi g water might damage in the "trunk" if your top is off or down.

Technically yes but if the JK is stolen the plastic lock is a 10 second problem. Not being able to produce the papers if stopped raises a second questioning.
Better to have the docs well hidden.

Okay if yours is like mine there should be no stealing involved short of towing it. Mine as well as I thought all of them have a transponder key. You may get it started but it shuts off within 15seconds. Now I agree the plastic locks give a false sense of security however what papers are they going to get? Registration and insurance card? It's a hassle to replace one (DMV visit) but the other is a phone call and with my company they send 2 anyway. If you are storing stuff like the title you need to do that is a fireproof/resistant safe at home. On top of that if they do get these items and get caught trying to pass them off on thier car (it happens here) they get zapped twice. Once for no insurance/registration the other for stolen cards of the same nature. One is a ticket the other they get arrested you do the math.
I am not telling you what to do and maybe you have a reason to be so worried/paranoid but life is too short to have worries like that. It's a jeep dude keep nothing that you can not replace in it or get security consoles, drawers and such to keep it safe.
In all my vehicles I put the registration and insurance card in a ziplock bag for two reasons. Mainly to keep them from getting wet when I get stuck in the rain, mud, or whatever and also if I do get pulled over I can find my registration and insurance card quickly and they are always together.

I understand about titles. I travel from ME to MD all year and don't want extra lockboxes and stuff to take up space. 3 radios, first aid kit, PFD, boots and gear and PC are enough clutter. And a magic key and 30 seconds in the JK have yet to be tested for ease of bypassing. Time will tell. This in a vehicle with no hood lock and the hood is not in the alarm system.
Thanks for the ideas.

Take a look behind the plastic on the drivers side, or pasenger side, down by your knees. Use velcro thats sticky on one side, put 2 strips behind the plastic and 2 strips of the opposite velcro (you know what I mean ... anyways) on the back of something that can hold your papers, like that "envelope" thing the insurance companies give you ... maybe you can find something better, something that is more water tight and has a button or zipper or something that you can close (so the papers cann't fall out).
Anyways, just a thought, maybe you can get an idea from this and come up with something.

I just thought of one, why not unzip the sports cover on the roll bar, and hide it in there somewhere?

I keep them inside the nice heavy-duty pouch my owner's manual came in. There is a card holder inside the cover that fits my insurance card perfectly. The whole lot stays inside my locked glove box.

Put them in a zip lock, envelope, fishing license holder and velcro them in the recess in the lid of the center console. Still accessable, yet fairly hidden. You dont want to be digging around under your seat or dash with a nervous officer approaching.

Yeah, rummaging around the jeep might not be such a good idea with a cop there.
"License and registration please."
"No problem, just let me get it"
"Sir I'm going to have to ask you to keep your hands visible."
"Just a sec, it's right down here"
"SIR, PUT YOUR HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE THEM!!!!"
"Ahhh here it is..."
"BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG......*reload*........ BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG!!!!!!!!" (Take notice the cop in the "demonstration" above is an LA cop, all of whom are notorious for being overreacting jerks.) :D :eek!:

I have to admit, we are lucky here in Australia and don;t have to carry that information around with us. We are usually asked for our D/L if we are pulled over and that is it.
But the creation of a good hidey hole is an excellent idea to hide parking station entry tickets. Saves having to carry them with you and possibly losing the damn thing!

The problem with storing docs that are easily availible is not the docs themselves. I learned that it is fairly common for thieves to break into your car steal your Garage Door opener and Registration, now he knows exactly where you live and can simply open the garage and take whatever he wants.
I was also told that cops are very understanding about hiding these docs and do this on thier personal vehicles, so if you simply tell them they are locked somewhere they should allow you to get them. Unless of course you are acting suspicious anyway.

i haven't had it done on my JK yet, but a drunken G/F yanked my locked TJ glove open to put her purse in when we got back to the Jeep...
i still have all my documentation locked in there, but things are different here...

Big brother is not an issue. I already have passed the background check.
I guess I expected a hood lock to go along with all the refinements of the JK 4dr. But then I would not be getting all the cool catalogs of stuff to add and customize. A lot of the stuff I added to the 05 Unlimited went with it.:yup:

Also a good one. I will check when it cools off a bit outside.
For my 05, I made a two section insulated roof liner and had a spot in it. I am measuring the JK hardtop for a headliner, it's too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. Maybe can do some pics.

I've put mine (registration & proof of Insurance) in a ziplock below everything else in the glove compartment and never really worried about it. I've been pulled over twice in the last 5 years and just tell the officer when he asks for my documents "Their in my glove box" and lean over to retreive them. Being they lay flat they don't take up an inordinate amount of room. Keeping them below everthing else is easier for my wife and I to always remember where they are which eliminates fishing around while the officer is standing there. It works for us.

Okay I just took a look at where you guys are and thinking about it in that context you make sense. It makes me glad I live in the country where we realy don't have to worry about such things much. It might be diffrent if I lived in or near a big city but I don't.

Yeah, when a cop stops me and asks for registration and insurance, I just pull out the .45, point it at him and pull the trigger. They pop out like the little "Bang!" flag.
