View Full Version : So What's Up with the Crappy MPG?

Seriously now, have any of you seen what the MPG on the new JK-Unlimited is? Well, at least according to some of the initial sticker shots (http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=305883) (16 city/19 hwy) that are circulating around show, it ain't any different than what the TJ gets now. I mean, I thought the whole idea of ditching the 4.0L-I6 in favor of the new 3.8L-V6 was done to make the new Wranglers more fuel efficient :rolleyes2:

Well, after taking a closer look at KBB (http://www.kbb.com/kb/ki.dll/kw.kc.ntr?kbb.VA;;VA059&22312&&;;nc;suv&Jeep;Wrangler;2007), they're numbers show 19 city/27 hwy with the Rubicon showing a little less at 18 city/25 hwy. However, I think I'm more inclined to believe what I see on the sticker over what KBB shows.

After a month and about 1000 miles, my best tank was 21 mpg and I am averaging about 16.5 with about 75% of my driving in town.

yeah the sticker is 16/19
anyone getting 27 is my hero! LOL
and the reason they ditched the 4.0 is because it is not economical to produce an engine forr just one model of car. Car companies usemod motors now a days, so that they can make little alterations to essentiually the sameengine and put it in alot of models. Saves ALOT of money. The wrangler was the only thing with the 4.0 anymore that chrysler makes, so naturally it is a better business decision to go to the much moreused 3.8.
Also, the reason MPG sucksis not because of the engine, hell the sameengine gets like 27+ mpg in the minivans LOL!
its the fact that the wrangler is probably the least aerodynamic car for sale, and it is one heavy bastard.

I heard the 4.0 went away cause of stricter safety rules..."it's smaller and sits further back from the front end". At least thats what my salesman pitched to me...
I remember my 1991 Wrangler 4.0L kicked ass with 2.5 leaf lift/3" bod lift and 35's, everything else stock...I could haul some serious asss....This new 3.8 can't haul anything but my big arse around at 13 MPG!
Still love it tho
Now when my TJ was new the MPG really sucked! After about 8,000 or so the MPG picked up. I think it has to do with breaking in the engine.

I traded in a van that got 9mpg with my average driving to my jeep getting 19. I save enough in gas to make the payments so I am happy as can be.

Just to throw in for everyone's benefit: The NEW EPA ratings (which will apply to all non-exempt 2008 vehicles) will reflect more realistic driving/testing conditions than the past ratings system did... the end result? Most vehicles will see a reduction in their City/Highway mileage ratings. The Jeep should drop from 16/19 to around 15/18, using the new testing methodology...

FYI: "new testing methodology" is defined as something not arbitrarily plucked out of the lead engineer's a$$, what it is now exactly, we dont know.
yeah it is a Jeep, yes it is as Aerodynamic as an eastside warehouse, but c'mon. 16-20? that is bad considering current technology. i dont expect 50 but 25-30 should be well within reach. This gets better milage than my old truck, and that makes me happy, but it certainly has alot of room for improvement.

Well, you can always improve its fuel economy by lightening it... if you have a 2-door, you can probably get an extra 1-2 MPG by removing the backseat, replacing the hardtop with the softtop (or no top at all), and removing the doors! :D

oh i do whenever i can! i have the top down and the rear seat out whenever i can get away with it. I am getting good at dropping the top and getting the rear seat/babyseat combo out quickly. whole thing down and out (not counting the doors or rolling the windows up for storage in the jeep) i can do easily in about 5-6 minutes, back together of course takes longer. Like 20 minutes+ (mostly because i am moping the whole time cuz i gotta put my toys away)

It's not the gas mileage that is the problem, it's the price of gas that is the problem. I'm sure there are others out there like me that can remember .25 cents a gallon. Didn't matter what the MPG was. You had a vehicle that sucked it like nobodies business and you had high horse power and you could pull any hill at any speed you wanted to and it only cost a few bucks to fill up. Oh man I miss those days.

What is interesting is how much better the gas mileage is in the Nitros. My boss got one the same time I got my jeep and he gets at least 25mpg just around town. Best I ever got on a long road trip was 18mpg. Now with the 33's I get 15 just about everywhere.
I don't know the weight differences between the unlimited and the nitros but they don't look a lot more aerodynamic than the jeep.

I used to get like 14mpg. Pissed me off!
Now I'm getting 18mpg that includes all city/highway traffic miles. I don't really get too much regular highway miles as my work hours are during rush hour.
But getting around 360 miles at 20 gallons, not bad. I'm going to take a road trip to FL on Tuesday night so lets see what this baby does all the way from VA...but once I enter FL I'll take the top down (will be morning by then) then drive rest of the 345 miles (to West Palm Beach) to see what difference it maeks w/ the top down...

Enjoy your trip. We have one planned next weekend to Palm Coast to see family. I can't wait to have the top off and hit the beach for some driving.

I have 1247 miles on mine. I'm getting lifetime avg. of 22mpg. 60%highway 40%city. i use to own a 2005 dodge 2500 quad cab 4x4 5.9cummins with 4.10rears. Over the 2 years i had it. I avg'd 22 empty and 18 towing 12,000lb camper. i traded it in for the wrangler. went from paying $600 a month to $350 a month. Now i use a tent or hotel. I am really surprized at the mileage with the jeep. I have always owned a diesel but i tell ya this little jeep of mine does everything my truck did (except for the camper) Love the mileage, love the jeep:rotflmao1:

I have around 2000 miles on mine now. The computer says that I'm getting 22.0 to 22.5 per gallon. By my calculations I'm getting a solid 21.5 per gallon. That's 3.5 per gallon better than my S-10 Blazer that I had.

I can tell you from experience that the top being down on my TJ made a huge difference with the 4 banger. As in, close to 25% at 80mph. I put the duster on it, and it helped a little, but not much. Not until I put the bikini on did it get close to the mileage with the top on. No top=tons of turbulence.

Is there anything that you can do to improve gas miliage? I heard a K&N air filter helps???

yea it's a old thread but what the hell...
if I wanted something good on gas I'd have gotten some crapy hybrid car or something.
according to the dash readout I'm getting 11.? mpg don't know what I'm actualy getting since I'm running 35's but honestly I don't care....
