View Full Version : Seatbelt flapping?

Hey guys, I noticed my seatbelts flapping with even just the freedom tops off. I read on here that someone used some boot blousers and was going to give that a try but I though they would bind the seatbelt when you took it off. I got my hands on stuff called Tak Tape, it is used for bundling cables. It sticks to the roll bars but not the seat belt material, hence, no binding. A google search tells you all you need to know.

Mine does it too. Next time I'm at Wal-Mart or whatever I'm just going to get some seatbelt pads and place them on the pillars where they slap against the plastic.

I went to West Marine and bought a strap holding dead man that I screwed over the inner part of the strap aboult half way between the top bracket and the bottom slot. No flap no mo'.. $3.00

Just put a little strap around each one. A little tougher on the 4 door, but you get the idea!

I tried a bunch of things. Yep the blousing straps worked but mine were so worn out that they have since retired.
I went for the "Velcro Velstretch" 2 pack. Our store only had a 27 inch pack and although a bit large actually seem to work just great. You can spin the buckle and fold completely behind the plastic. It is a 1 inch wide strap.
We've got the 4 door and with the use of these straps - it works great - placed on both side and haven't heard a flap since and haven't noticed any wear on the plastic or the belts.

i used apc racing seat belt pads, and cut thier logo off so that they would be just plain black and strapped them around the belts. You dont even notice them, they are loose enough to let the best slide like normal, and stop the flapping! I love em, just dont tell anyone they are apc lol

can you explain a little more what you did/where you used it? I'd like to get rid of this annoyance! thanks
Take a look at Rubimons post.....same thing but with Tak Tape.

[QUOTE=Ruskin;124093]on the 4 dr this also works. It's just velcro straps from home depot...
i got the velcro ones from home depot as well. i think they cost about $3.00 and you get a bunch of extras in case they wear out. probably the cheapest solution.

You all may try to lower the position of the seat belt iver your left shoulder. I dropped mine just at my shoulder level (or a bit above) and still comfortable and didn't flap around.

I feel odd saying this... but my front seat belts have yet to flap around, even with the top off, doors off, doing 80, they just don’t flap... BUT, my rear seat belts are back there drumming away like Lars Ulrich from Metallica (just without the rhythm  ). They've been heating the backside of the seat so much and so hard that the carpet has worn off the seats in two little spots. So far buckling them up has been my fix, but do any of you have a solution for this? I've tried the Velcro and it didn’t hold because of the angles. Does anyone else have this problem?

Did you try actually clicking the male into the female without anyone in the seat and driving around like that? My jeep had this issue and I just clicked them together.
Then... if you still get some "flapping" pull the belt out all the way till it starts to click (where it locks on the way back in) They use this method when installing child safety seats. This will keep tension on it and possibly help it stop flapping.

i like my seatbelts to flap... every jeep that i can remember has always done that... to me, it's one of the signature sounds of taking the top off!

I used the shoulder pads around the rear seatbelts. It adds a little weight to them, so they stop flapping.

I guess different Jeeps have different quirks, cause my fronts flap like crazy, but the back ones don't. Gotta get me some velcro. Thanks for the fix guys.:yup:

I do not recommend the velcro. I used these on my 2004 Rubicon for two years and they started to fray after several months. I am not an expert but I am guessing this is not good from a safety stand point.

Haven't had any problems with mine, but I will agree with you that a frayed belt isn't a safe belt.
Guess it is just one more thing I'll have to keep my eye on, such as oil level, air pressure, etc .

I'm using the elastic velcro and to date - no fraying - no noticeable wear anywhere in fact. It gets used a minimum of 8 times per day...
...but I'll keep checking it with my biweekly walk arounds...

Because of the fraying possibility, I went with using some self-sticking pads that came with my old x-cargo roof carrier I got from Sears a long time ago (that I use on top of my other cars). It came with padding strips of about 6"x1" and about 1/2" thick. I just stuck one 6" strip vertically on the plastic cover right where the seatbelt flap against it. They are in between the belts and the plastic and are about the same color, so you dont even notice they are there.
No fraying, and though the belts can still flap (as not tied down like with the velcro), they dont seem to make any noise against the padding. With or without people in the seats.

I hit up the Autozone for two sheepskin seat belt pads and put them on the seat belt just above where it goes into the retractor in the pillar. They were $6 each, and grey in color, so they matched, somewhat, the interior. Problem solved and they're barely noticeable.

I just cut about a 1"x1.5" long strip of velcro (the soft fuzzy size) and stuck it to the plastic trim just above the seat belt opening. The belts probably still flap in the wind, but ahh silence! :D

Cheers,
hey just twist your seat belt a couple of times, that's what I do...free and easy. I also do the same thing with tie-down straps, makes a huge difference...learned it from a kayak buddy of mine, then tried it on the seatbelt. Try it!

I use a double-sided velcro product called strapall (got it at REI)
you cut it to length. used it to hold the seat belt in place, replace the sunrider top straps, to hold my wheel lock in the jack area, attach my garage door opener. you can make a strap for pretty much everything and the velcro is stronger than the pre-made ties you get at Home Depot
oh yeah, the soft side is towads the seat belt

I just went to Walmart and bought some felt circular pads that go under furniture and stuck one on top of another and stuck them both to the plastic seatbelt pillar on both sides just above and parallel to the silver catch for the door jam. The felt pads stick perfectly in between the belt and the pillar. All for three dollars. And I have extras that came with the pack in case the adhesive ever wears out or weakens due to rain. Hope this helps.

I saw on here another post where instead of velcro you just put the seat belt behind the plastic that covers the lover half of the roll bar. I dont know if it worked for 4 doors but I have a 2 door and it took about 3 minutes for each side. Problem solved!

Been a while since I originally posted this, but I should mention I took mine off as they were fraying the seatbelts. Not good.
Now cause I have a 2 door I just tuck them into the plastic, works great.

Velcro wraps work for me, front and rear. Home depot sells some Velcro brand ties for a few bucks per pair. Just be sure you don't wrap too tightly, preventing easy movement/tightening of the belt..

My fronts flap like crazy with the windows down but the top up.
It hasn't bothered me in a while, because the top has been down. But now with a chill in the air...
I guess I'll try either the velco strap or the pads and see what happens.

I had my doors off for a week or two and immediately noticed the fronts flapping loudly. I tried the whole "route them under the plastic" thing but got aggravated cuz the belt wouldn't retract properly. ended up using some straps around the pillar and that worked very well. When my doors are on there are no issues from the front belts.

Just personal preference, but it's nice to have the pads because the seat belt still works like normal, where it looks like the straps would make retracting or pulling out the seat belt very difficult.
