Just got back from a trail ride with our local club. Nothing too tough, but some fun trails. Good shakedown ride for my bro's jk. He's 3/4" and 285/75/16's, i'm ~3" and 305/70/16's. EVERYONE was impressed. The guys kept yelling at us! they kept saying they were going to have to buy one after seeing them on the trail :) hehehehe. I love proving the haters wrong! Anyway here are the pics. Vids are uploading now.

Cool pics. I live in West Texas and everything is flat, dry, and ugly. I wish I somewhere close to my area that is cool like those pics you are in.

No, no, it's your plastic skid plate.

Very cool videos, awesome to see folks enjoying their JK's. I watched them in order of you, then the TJ, then your brother going up the hill. What as great show of capability.
I had a couple questions. What tires do you and your brother have and do you know what tires were on the TJ? Did the TJ have an older set of tires, that were worn or not the best choice of mud tire?
I ask this in all seriousness, this is not an attempt to diminish what we saw. You can't even call me a rookie, I don't have my JK yet and I've never owned a Jeep. I'm just curious about types of tires how much that will improve how the Jeep performs.
Thanks in advance,
Beel

my brother and i were both running maxxis bighorns. He is on 285/75/16's and i'm on 305/70/16's.
the tj is on 31x10.50 MT's, 2" of lift, 3" lift shocks.
there's a few more vids i can post of a few other rigs struggling.

Ok, I hope I get this right. So you have a wider tread than your brother, he has proportionately greater sidewall? What do you think of the ride between the two on pavement?
The TJ was BFG MT's?
Again, you don't have to prove a thing to me by showing other videos. I've ordered a Rubicon. I'm trying to figure out from the real world example you've shown us how well I can expect the stock tires to perform. From what you've shown it appears you've made a great choice. I'm just seeing what other options should I consider?

2K2,..you & your Bro definitely can put on a great show(Awesome Vid's)....the JK & it's ESP=(BLD) acts like a "VIRTUAL FRONT & REAR LOCKER'S".... It show's that a Computer run system can think & act on all these bad situations at the (((Speed of Light))). I guess all it ask for is some great rubber under you, and it will go where you might think it won't. Where you Wheelin at (STATE)??

2k2wranglerx, was the 3/4" spacer needed for your bro's 285's? Do you think you could clear 305/70 R16's with the 3/4" spacer without rubbing? Also, I noticed you and your brother both have Maxxis Bighorns, what do yall think of the quality of the tire? One more question, why Bighorns over Buckshots? Sorry for so many questions.....I guess if your at work - I made some time go by ;) .

No prob on the questions.
I don't think the 3/4" lift and 305's would be an issue. They're VERY close to the same size. Honestly, where it's a close call is on backspacing. the rears are REALLY close to the sway bar links. But they do clear . .. barely!
the 3/4" lift probably wasn't totally necessary for the 285's, but it leveled out the rig and it does rub at full flex and at turn on the inside of the flair slightly. Not enough to say its an issue, and i only heard it do it once. That being said, slightly may change to bad without the spacer.
we went with bighorns because 120 bucks a tire is a KILLER deal. I've had friends run buckshots, and they were REALLY stiff. I'm very pleased with the bighorns. They may not last as long, but they seem to be quieter (look at the center tread compared to the buckshots) and seem to ride better.

I really appreciate your advice and patience. One thing I am clueless on is backspacing. If I were to get 305's or 285's with the 3/4" lift spacers, what backspacing would you recommend? what is the backspacing on the stock rims? I really like some of the black 16x8 rims that Pro Comp has out, would they work for the set-up that I'm questioning....or would the tires rub more with the new rims? Not sure what the backspacing is on the Pro Comp rims. All advice is much appreciated. :yup:

stock are 16x7 with 6"!!!!! of backspacing.
If i were to do it again. With 305's i'd run 16x8 with 5" of BS. That seems to me that it would be perfect. wouldn't hang out too far, would give you some breathing room between the tires/swaybar links.
with 285's, really unless you want to space em out, you don't need to change wheels or Backspacing.
Do you have factory alum 16's? if so i'd be interested. I really like how they look on my Bro's rig.

thanks again 2k2,
I'm still trying to decide which size tires I should go with. I'll either do a 3/4" or 2" lift. I'm thinking maybe I should just getthe tires and wheel that I want, then lift accordingly. As for the factory alums, they do look good, but I haven't even gotten my JK yet. If I end up with the alums, I'll let you know. I'm trying to get an idea of wheels/tires/lift now so that when I do get my JK, I can swith out the stock tires ASAP. The stock cookie cutters just aren't cuttin it :naw: .

there's the vids!
Everyone needs to go to these videos and give them a rating of 5 stars, that way they will show up on the top rated of youtube.com home page. When they show up on the top rated page more and more people will get to see them, the JK haters will get more and more pissed off (but will have watched the video), and the videos will move higher on the most watched list. It is a vicious cycle.
I like that you kept the stock wheels. You can fit 305's on factory 16's??? That would save me alot of money. Have you seen a 12.5 on the factory wheels? Anyway did you run the ESP in those videos? Great looking rides, my brother has a pink Geo prism!!!:naw:

let the ESP do whatever it does in low range in the vids.
those are 305's on factory 16's and my bro has 285's on factory 16's. I'm 3"front 2" rear lift, he's 3/4" spacer front lift.
What lift do you have??? I am probably going to order a Full Traction 2'' and 33x12.5 or 305/70. Did you change the shocks?

i have a "custom" lift hehehe
i took 4" wj coils, cut them to a better height, and heated/bent the coils to fit the buckets.
i figure i have ~3" front 2" rear
i also did change my shocks. they are the same shocks that woul dhave come with a 4" wj lift. i can't remember the length right now. But they're about the right height. I don't drop any springs.

i think the ESP is automatically shut off on 4WD LOW...see page 112 of the manual (i'm not trying to geek out, i just read that in my manual last night because i wanted to know when and how it worked).

ESP yes but your brake assist (traction control) remains.
He swears it's red!!! And my butt is green!!!:rotflmao1: Really its not but you get the point. Anyone know if you can run factory shocks with a 2'' spacer? If I buy shocks and plan on more lift later can I put shocks for a 4" kit on with a 2"??? Will that make it ride to stiff?

rancho shocks for 2" jk lifts are the EXACT same length as stock shocks! i know this because i bought 2 for my brother's rig when we put 3/4" spacers in the front.
that being said, i'm sure you can run them. If you run longer shocks with a smaller lift you'll get more droop, but you have to be careful that you won't bottom out the shock on compression, and that you won't lose springs on droop.
