I have always been happiest with cobra radios and firestick antennas.

The all-in-one is terrible. Run don't walk to a CB shop near you....
They are heavy and don't get as good a range and clarity over the small speaker.

Second that the handheld is crap. They all put out the same wattage, 4w I think. Depends on extras, a nice mic is cool as is an external speaker by your head. Firestick antennas are the way to go, they are tunable, so make sure you have someone tune it for reception, its important. The big question is where is the best place to mount the unit and antenna.

based on some of the information you've given:
I purchased a firestik antenna with a Cobra 148 GTL CB Radio.
Thanks for the input.

Where and how are you going to mount the antenna?
I'm trying to decide where to mount both my CB and ham antennas.

The only problem might be is that the instructions are for a TJ. There isn't that much of a flat area on the new JK.
Be sure to post where you end up installing it. Pictures would be nice too! :yup:

I mounted my antenna to the back of the license plate as pictured.
Works good. Don't forget to attach a ground strap in side the box.
The cable follows the stock wiring harnes to the front under the floor.

excellent...difficult to install? closer pictures?

Not hard at all. The tough part is getting the carpet back in after you put the antenna cable there.
I should have some pictures tomorrow.

I like the fact that you didn't have to drill any metal. Looks good.
What happened to the "whip" antennas that were popular years ago, I believe the Army still uses them in their Hummers...just curious since when I had a CB years ago these mounted on the bumper with a turn buckle that made the installation clean and no need to drill into any part of the vehicle plus I could get great reception and distance as well.

DO NOT MOUNT TO THE FENDER AS FIRESTICK SUGGESTS! I RIPPED THE SHEETMETAL ON MY TJ USING THEIR BRACKETS! The fender location does get the antena up high, but I had to move it because the natural whipping the antenna did put too much stress on the metal. Not to mention the JK sheetmetal seems even thinner than the TJ metal.

jeepinoutwest: thanks for the heads up. i personally like DadsCJ's idea...and when I finally take delivery on the JK...i'll most likely do exactly the same.

how about the length of the antenna? most recommended size?

I have a 48" stick on mine as it sticks above the roof line about a foot or so. That is all you really need. Anymore and it hits everything on the trail and makes a heck of a noise and I have already lost the little red tip off my antenna.

I dont suggest more than 48" as that one already whips back and forth violently on the trail hitting your jeep and causing stress on the mount. I'd actually consider a 36" next time, they seem to whip a lot less purely as a result of physics.

I saw a thread where a guy mounted his to the spare tire mount, between the door and the spare. It looked pretty clean.

Kilby has these....A long steel lugnut with an aluminum tube that slides over it. Need to always have a hex key to remove the mount prior to removing the spare and some lubricant to keep the disimilar metals from rusting to eachother. My wife has one on her KJ and it works great. Antenna and spring/quick disconnect not included.
Good luck

I just got a cheep Cobra 3 from walmart only like 35 bucks, but i can't figure out where to mount it?? it's small, but I don't see any good place around the console or dash to mount it?
Any suggestions? and we got one for my girl friend's 06 Rubicon unlimited too, so any suggestions to mount it on hers would be great too!
the antenna, i'll probably just drill a hole in the spare tire bracket and mount one there...

Here is a license plate mount on a JK from Giga Parts (http://www.gigaparts.com). You can easily use for a CB instead of the Amateur Radio antenna I'm using.
