Damn, check engine light.

My XJ Cherokee was just passed on to my Girlfriend after I purchased my JK about a month ago. It's 2001 with 46,000 miles on it. The check engine light came on yesterday and I can't seem to find anything wrong. I made an appt. at the dealer to have it checked out. Any idea what this could be? I have never had ANY issues with it and I can't seem to tell if anything is wrong.

Whenever I've had the check engine light come on, it's been an O2 sensor that went bad.

In fact, I just had an O2 sensor replaced in my XJ last month. Unfortunately the XJ has a non-standard sensor design that requires you buy the mopar part.

It turned out to be a vac. hose so the diagnostics and labor were much more than the part. At least its fixed. Caboose, yes, get the hell away from me. :rotflmao1:

Mine just came on and after I ran a scanner on it. It turned out to be the Neutral safety switch. I've heard they are a pain in the butt to change. Oh well at least I know. :D

some places like advance auto will hook up a scan tool free for a check engine light for ya.... and the adapters to laptops are getting cheaper

Cycle the ignition on (don't start) and off 3 times and end up with it on (4th). Leave it on and your odometer will cycle through the error codes (55 means it's finished).

Google the codes for your vehicle (I only have one's for a 97) Check and repair as necessary.

My '97 had the check light on for 7 years until a friend said to check the gas cap. For $15 I said what the heck(10 years old at that time). I replaced it, and the light's been off ever since, but that may not be your problem. Mine always ran good, so I didn't let the light bother me.

I just slap on top of guage cluster dash and light goes away. Have had the xj checked and no findable problem:thumbsup:
