Can the Dana 44 under the rear of a non Rubi be modified with the rubi air locker? Can an aftermarket locker use the factory switches that are located at the bottom of the center dash?
Keep the shiny side up,

This might sound dumb but, we are talking about a JK right? Not something like a JK axle under a TJ?
To answer your questions.
Can the Dana 44 under the rear of a non Rubi be modified with the rubi air locker?
I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to use the Rubicon electric locker in your JK 44 the axles are the same except for the locking carrier. If you did decided to go this route, the only issue may be the ring and pinion bolting onto the carrier, this would be dependent on your factory gear ratio.
Secondly
Can an aftermarket locker use the factory switches that are located at the bottom of the center dash?
This gets tricky, the factory switches that are on the bottom center of the dash have a plug in the back, so to wire these it would be really difficult. I’m not saying it couldn’t be done, but it wouldn’t be worth the time. Unless you were using a factory Rubicon axle/locker setup.
In the case of the aftermarket locker you would be better off using the switches that are included in the kit.
Im confused on what you actually are running? Because you ask if the factory Rubicon locker would work, then you asked about the switches on the bottom of the dash? I was under the assumption that these locker switches were only on the Rubicon models?
I hope my reply makes some sense and helps you!
Thanks,
Jamey

Many believe that the factory e-locker only comes on the Rubi. This is not true. I have an X model with both the factory e-locker and the e-disconnects and I saw many others as I went through the search to find my Jeep (I am in Utah, so maybe this is just a Utah thing).
I bring this up so as to clarify that the switches are on other models, but I am not sure if the switches are on all models (although it would seem that the place for the switches would be).
Don't all JKs come with the Dana 44 in the rear anyway? Out of the hundreds that I looked at I never found one that did not have the 44. Even those that did not list it on the window sticker still had it when I looked underneath.
If this is the case, it is only a locker you are in need of in the rear to get to the Rubicon level of rear axle.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Some early builds had Dana 35 rear axels. Only the Rubicon had Dana 44 front axels. It wasn't until around April or later that they offered the lockers in the X or Sahara models.

Rubicon rear 44's have 32 spline axles. Non-Rubicon open and LSD 44s have 30 spline axles. Don't know if a front Rubicon carrier would work in the rear with the 30 spline axles or not...

I have a D44 in the rear. I don't have the switches so my question was intended to upgrade my Sahara to Rubicon with e-locker and e-disco. I'm sorry if I was unclear. I have factory 4.10's nonlocker. I want to put a D44 in the front because I don't think my front end can handle the abuse of 37"s, even if the gearing can.

When I was looking for lockers in my JK D44 rear the online companys all told me that "nobody (at that time) was making a locker for the 32 spline D44 in the JK's" That is a quote and the way he was talking the D30 fronts also had 32 splines............That is why all the after market had to scramble to make lockers to fit..............
If anyone has proof that I was told wrong please let me know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only 2-Doors had the D35 right?
When I was doing all my research YES!! only the 2 doors had a D35 rear. That is the biggest reason I got a 4-door....they had a D44 standard:yup:

BTW Thanks for the PM Paineszj. Looking forward to hearing about the shipping $$$.

Actually, at some point during the 2007 build year, all JK X and Saharas had the D44 HD 30-spline rear axle. Crappler did something smart for a change and phased out the D35.

I've got a 07 Sahara back in June, ordered lockers from the factory but the jeep came without them. Dealer was happy to not have me take the jeep as he could have sold it that after for more than the deal he gave me when I ordered it. Anyway, now I want to put on lockers. I understand I need to order a new front end with the locker in it from jeep. Can I get just the rear locker without replacing the rear axle as well?

yes you can add a locker to the rear, in fact a better one. It sounds like the dealer pulled one on you to me. I bet he sold "your" jeep to someone else.

Just got my D44 front axle installed. Took me a full day 10+ hrs to swap out working by myself. Wired it so that I can lock it in 4Hi as well as 4Lo, just flip the switch. Now , I need some more rain to make things soggy. Music to my ears to hear the front tires chirping as I backed down the driveway very slowly and turned , on the initial trip out of the garage. Can't wait to make it work. :yup:
