Just bought a 95 jeep xj need tranny ? answerd

ok so this is my first jeep and i love it but the tranny acts like it wont engage in first gear when i stop ok so i dont have a good take off untill i hit 2nd gear is there like an overdrive linkage or something i can do to fix problem because when i put it in first gear manually and take off it goes fine please help thanks alot
