Here I am, waiting for my 2007 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon that I ordered almost 10 weeks ago, which DC hasn't even started building yet. :boohoo:
Ever since I came upon this great forum, every day when I get out of work I sit at my computer and read all the new posts and see if any one has answered or added to something I have said, and I also check to see if anyone else has gotten their new JK yet, because not only am I happy for them, but it also makes me feel a little better knowing that DC has gotten one order closer to putting mine together.:yup:
While waiting, I'm reading all these posts of all these problems (that just seem to keep adding up) that our friends here in the forum are having with their new JK's. And I must admit that I really wonder if I should buy a '06 Unlimited Rubicon instead.
I've never owned a Jeep, mainly because I always thought they were a little too short for my taste, untill I found out that they also make the longer wheel base unlimiteds which I found out last year. Then when I started looking into them I saw that they were coming out with the four door, so I waited.
I really really love the look of the four door, :eek!: and never in my life has a vehicle made me feel so possessed to buy it as does the JK. Every vehicle I have ever owned so far has been a used one, (even my motorcycles).
I really wonder about how reliable the new V6 is going to turn out to be.
Every Jeep owner I have spoken to about their pre 2007 vehicle all tend to say that you just can't kill the ol' straight six, they run forever. :yup:
I really love that four door, but I really would like to know that my vehicle is gonna be reliable too.
I guess what I really want to know is... Do The 2006 Unlimited Rubicons have any serious problems? Or are they for the most part, the best Wrangler that Jeep ever came out with to date (excluding the JK), because they basicly had the last fourty-someodd years or more to get them to where they are today?
I'm seriously thinking about throwing in the towel and getting a '06 instead, but I would like to know what kind of a track record they have first.
Please Help Me

PS: I fully intend to go wheelin with whatever I get. It's not gonna be just a mall runner, otherwise I wouldn't get a Rubicon.

It was all the past Wrangler models that made me want to get the Jeep in the first place. I got a TJ 2006 for my son to drive (figuring that would solve my urge) and now I wanted one even more. I wrestled with the same issues you are, and most of the forums I was reading at the time were TJ forums, so I was really getting biased information. I finally decided to hold out and get the JK and I am glad I did. The difference in ride quality (comfort, quiteness, power locks, and windows, safety features, room(and I am talking 2door), etc. etc.) is big.
Although my son loves his Jeep and wouldn't trade it for the world, part of me wishes I would have waited a little and got him an 07.
A friend of mine with recently purchased nice looking red lifted TJ, took mine for a ride and said "Sh*t, my wife is gonna kill me when she sees yours." " Why didn't you research it a little like him before you bought"(man using squeeky voice imitating his wife)
All the bitching and moaning we all do on these forums is just human nature. Nothing that serious, just little annoyances we could find in any man made product, especially a first year model. When we are out with our hair blowing in the breeze, (or in my case head blowing in the breeze), getting waves from fellow Jeepers, the little drips of water on the dashboard you had a month ago are meaningless. All fixable items, that's what warranties are for anyway.
I would hold out! Just my $ .02.

If you go to any forum on any car, you will see many problems.
I actually think the JK problems are small,

IT seems that most of the problems now have a fix and have been small.i have owned 2 tj a 2003 and a 2004.the 2003 went back under the lemon law and i still bought a 2004 and now a 2007.I think the advantages of the 07 4 door makes it a better jeep then the 06.the 3.8 v6 is not new its been around the block a fews times and has a good rep.

Thanks for the input guys, I really do appriceate your replys.
I guess I've just got a case of the "I aint got my Rubi yet" blues.:naw: :boohoo:
And to read about the problems that the other folks are having with their vehicles,
it's really easy to forget that each problem comes from a different person. And with all the different problems that I've read about rolling around in my mind,
I eventually started thinking something to the affect of, "When I get my Jeep I'm going to have all of these problems to deal with", and I kind of started to psych myself out. When the truth of the matter is, I might have to deal with some, not all of the problems. And then again I might get lucky and not have to deal with any.
But I'm not holding my breath
I'm gonna wait for my JK :yup:

Chopper - I can sure understand your frustration with having to wait for your JK. Many of us can identify with you. I ordered in August and didn't get mine until the end of November. But it was worth the wait.
I have owned Wranglers since 1997 and I can't think of a more fun vehicle to drive. They all have had their quirks and problems but overall they can't be beat for just plain fun.
I think you find the complaints in forums like this because it's a place to share your problems in hope that someone has stumbled upon a solution. I'm sure there are many of us out there that would go on and on about how much we love our JK's. But we also know that our fellow JK owners probably feel the same way so we just admire them in silence.
I really think you'll be happy with the wait. The 4-door was what I have been waiting for. I had even looked into conversion shops like AEV and TCV to build a 4-door Wrangler for me.

Chopper,
I've had my Unlimited for two months and haven't had any problems. We just went through the worst month of rain in Seattle I can remember and no leaks on my freedom top. No electrical issues, the paint behind the hinges is a little thin but mine is silver so you really can't see it.
Plus I've never owned a car that has gotten so many comments when I'm out and about. Pretty much every time I get gas somebody comes over and asks me about the vehicle and how much they like it. From 17 year old snowboarders to business guys putting gas in their Lexus everyone loves this Jeep. I was picking up my windows for my soft top yesterday from my dealer (they forgot to give them to me when I bought the vehicle) and when I went out to get in my Jeep there were 6 people pushing their noses up to the glass in the parking lot. One of the salespeople told me that these jeeps are in such short supply that they have people offering to pay thousands over sticker and still can't get them in fast enough.
You are right on when you say that you may need to deal with some of these problems but not all. If your experience is anything like mine you will find that this is the best jeep manufactured so far. Your patience will pay off in the amount of fun your are going to have once you get it.

Thank's again everybody for your support and all your kind words of encouragement.
Reading the replys you've posted, has kind of had an anti-anxiety affect for me.
Really...you have helped me feel better about my decision, and also given me the boost that I needed to hang in there and wait for it instead of buying something else.
I have also decided to not bug my dealer. The last call I'm made to him was to drop the MYGig order and switch it to the 6 disk changer instead.
(I want a nav system that's portable instead of one that's anchored down.)
I'm gonna wait for him to call me so it will be a surprise. It would be nice to get my ride by my birthday in March though.
I am still a bit curious about the differences between a 2006 Unlimited Rubicon, and a 2007 Unlimited Rubicon.
We all know the obvious; one's got 2 doors the other has 4. The 4 door has more cargo room and a longer wheelbase.
Things like this are what I'm really wondering about.
Would you rather have a straight 6, if yes or, if no...why?
What are the advantages of having a V6 over a straight 6 and vice-versa?
What did the 2006 have that you wish the 2007 came with?
What's new in the 2007 that you are glad that they changed?
I would really love to hear your comments
One thing that I know is different in the '07 that I wish they didn't change is the instrument cluster.
I like guages better than idiot lights, and I know that there are a couple guages that DC did away with.
One of the first things I'm gonna do when I get my Rubi is to mount those missing guages somewhere on the dash.
What about you folks?

In so many ways, I really think the differences between the 06 and 07 is more like comparing apples and oranges. Plain and simple, the JK is no TJ and vice versa. As you may or may not know, I am a die hard Jeep lover... that's ALL Jeeps and there's nothing I wish the JK had that the TJ had. Yes, the I-6 was a beast that ran forever but this new V6 may too? And, if it doesn't, you can be sure that Jeep will replace it with something else down the road. It's not like Jeep hasn't dabbled with other engines before including V6's. In the end, I think they have to try new things... take a risk in order to push the ball forward and I would rather they did that and make mistakes then to live in the past. :yup:
Although I love my TJ and have no intention of ever selling it, I can honestly say that the improvements made to the JK are significant enought to make it a better Jeep.

I didn't know this...What other Jeeps came stock with a V6? Or do you mean JEEP in general? Not just CJ's or wranglers?

I feel the same way about my Rubi and I don't even have it yet. And as far as it being a better Jeep...Through everybody's reply to my thread I have come to be fairly well convinced of this.
And after I read your last reply as well Eddy, I see what you mean...Apples and Oranges....You hit it right on the head:yup:

I refused to trade in my '99 XJ when buying the JK because I love that reliable 4.0 I-6. I'd love to see how the JK would run using the inline-6, but I'm willing to try the V6 to get a true upgrade from my 4-door cherokee in so many other respects.
(Looking forward to improving my XJ now that it's not my daily driver...)

Well...As much of a better Jeep the JK may be...like you said Eddie, the I-6 was a beast that ran forever.
That's what got me looking into buying a Jeep to begin with...they run forever.
When I found out about the Unlimited models and their longer wheel base, that's what really sparked my intrest,
because of the extra storage space they had over the shorter wranglers.
and then I started looking a little deeper and that's when I learned about the new four door JKs. When I saw one I fell in love.:luvlove:
I knew that I had found the Jeep that I wanted. But since I had never owned a Jeep before I didn't know and or realize
how drasticly DC had really changed them internally (ie. the V-6). Just like the same problem I tend to have with women...I fell in love
with the body, without getting to know them on a deeper level.
Well...To make a long story even longer.....
I got a call from my dealer yesterday, and he informed me that now mine won't be built 'till sometime in March
so I most likely won't see it untill April. AAAARRRRRR!!!!!!! :motz2: THAAAAT' DOES IT !!!!!!!!!:cursing:
I know that a lot of folks have been waiting longer than me, (you longer than anybody else in this whole forum Eddie) and I'm really
feeling kind of like a shumck after some of the posts I have writen, but I'm done waitin'...
I'll have my Unlimited Rubi with a manual trany and slate interior by next week.
But it will be an nice new black '06, with a known to be tried and true, reliable I-6 instead.
As a matter of fact when I was talking to the dealer I made the arangements right then and there to get the '06.
It's what I was gonna get to begin with before I found out about the four door JKs anyhoo :yup:
And one more thing...I was reminded of something my Dad (God rest his soul) always said, "Never buy the first year
of a new model vehicle because they haven't had all the bugs worked out of them yet."

March/April really isn't that far away. Maybe it will be sooner as they are starting to pump these Rubi's out. I personally would hold off. Again, I have both a TJ and a JK.

Your picture was perfect timing. I was just discussing the "Vulnerable Muffler" on the JK vs the gas tank on a TJ and had to call my buddy in from the shop to point it out. Thanks for helping me prove a point.

Yeh, that muffler looks pretty tucked away in comparison to that big ole gas tank. I didn't realize it myself until I took the picture.

I can't wait to pick up my JK, but not till 2008 or 2009, when all the problems of a $28,000 SUV are worked out...
or, most of them anyway... ;)

I think most of the initial issues are already worked out. Who knows what others may pop up, though. I figured that is what my warranty was for and went for it.
