There are quite a few variables that would need to be taken into consideration in order to answer this question properly.

First Question: On the factory aluminum rims, there should be a clear coat. Did the shop coat directly over the clear, or did they remove the clear coat first?
a) If the shop recoated over the clear, there is a chance that inter-coat adhesion issues could occur.

Second Question: If the shop removed the clear coat, how did they remove it- chemical or blast?

Last Question: If the shop removed the clear coat, a full treatment of the aluminum should have been conducted. This would typically consist of an alkaline cleaning, chemical etching, and a passivating sealer applied as the last stage (with appropriate rinsing in-between).
a) One of the most important steps here is to insure that the shop is using high quality rinsing stages and the final passivating seal.

The best case scenario would be for complete removal of the clear coat, followed by a quality pretreatment of the substrate and full cure.

If the proper procedures were followed, that coating should hold up very well. The only drawback to a satin\matte finish versus other finishes would be a tendency to chip a bit easier than a full gloss or clear coat.

I've been contemplating re-finishing my wheels in the same way, and again, following proper procedures the final coating properties would be more than adequate.

(However, I'm still awaiting the delivery of my vehicle)

For those of you doing getting powder coat, can you tell us what they are charging a wheel to do it?

Mine came to $45 per wheel, including dismount, remount, balancing and tax. I dropped the wheels off Monday and they are supposed to be ready Thursday.

Only bad thing about it is not driving it for a week:sad: , especialy since I've only had it 1 week. I'm already going through withdrawls and its only been 3 days.
The upside is, at least I have a TJ to drive in the meantime:toung:

I have polished m/t 2's so they don't have to strip them and its $50 a wheel then again I am on the east coast and PowderCoating is not very popular yet.

Well, it looks like it's gonna take at least a week for the wheels to be done. Guy that I dropped them off with told me I'd have em back yesterday, called and they said "hopefully" Monday.
Nothing worse than going home and looking at the JK on jackstands in the garage. I should have planned some other mods around this :banghead:

Finally got them back! I'm very happy with the results, especially for the cost.

I'll put up some pics tonight.
