Ok. I've had it. I've had my Unlimited Sahara and I've heard this exact phrase three times now...two from strangers and one from a neighbor. Thing is, I think they were all trying to be complimentary. But it's not, and I'm sure everyone on this board knows why. So, let's gather some great responses...I've come up with none...I just mumble something under my breath and pretend I didn't hear it. We need some great come-back lines!

I appreciate the hard work so far on these great come backs. I don't take offense when people mention Hummers because I had the same thought when I first saw it. To me it just looks a little more military in the 4 door version. I think it's the 45 degree cut offs on the doors. Another contributor is the square corners on the hard doors. Jeep has been rounding the hard door corners on the back for ages. It's one of the details you wouldn't get on a military vehicle.

For me, it's not a problem, I'm not the kind of jeep is better than everything. Some people have tell me that I look like Tom Cruise but hey, I think they were drug or stone cold! They can say what they want, I buy it because it look good and go everywhere. AMC Pacer looks like anything and I wouldn't have bought it even for free. Hummer is for many people a good truck so I prefer to think that it's great to be refer to something good than bad.

You can just remind them that Jeep allowed AM General to use the Jeep grill on the military version, and then GM stole it and put it on all off their wanna be Jeeps.

I agree with that!:yup: Besides, Jeeps came out first. Issue was after a while that you cant put 25 cannons, a rocket launcher and an airport size radar that spins around cuz jeep is just small, so the army decided to go with a humvee since it can be converted into pretty much anything. Don't get me wrong Hummer (H1, not the H2) is a nice machine, I like it for showing off, but I would never take civillian version rock crawling. Anyways, well maybe now army be adopin these 4 door jks for superior officer transport especially into hard to reach areas and use H1's for combat D :yup:

Nice comparison shots Rhodesian. I've just never seen the "it looks like a hummer" thing. I don't think they look alike at all. I think the funny part is that I've read several posts where they think the JK looks like a Liberty. So a Liberty and a Hummer look alike? LOL

I remember a review I read in some magazine when the H2 first came out. About the H2, the reviewer said, "The only offroading this vehicle will ever see is when some guys housewife backs over the landscaping."

Sexist, I know. But I thought it summed up the whole "soccer mom in an SUV" cliche pretty well.

While I was going to college in Texas, a guy brought his brand new H2 into the 10 minute lube shop where I was working. When asked his opinion for getting the H2 instead of the H1, the only reason he gave was, "The H2 accelerates faster than the H1."

Technically, he was right:
H1 Acceleration= 0-60 in 13.5 seconds. (2005 H1 Alpha [wagon] Automobile Magazine review)
H2 Acceleration=0-60 in 10 seconds. (2003 Consumer Guide review)

Who buys a 4x4 for its skills in acceleration, anyway?

More meat for the meateaters.

If you are going to be stupid enough to insult the vehicles you are trying to sell, then you deserve to have your sales go to other vendors that know/care more, like Don A Vee. And if you don't think that comparing a Hummer to a Jeep is an insult, then you don't know your customers very well.

Just got that rediculous remark yesterday at work, I was setting at my desk, a guy I know was standing behind me looking down at my Wrangler and said, who owns the Green Hummer? ....Well now, I was the only one there and I know it was directed to me, and he's seen it numerous times, definitely screwing with me. I didn't even turn around and answer him, he said it about 4 times, I finally swung around in my chair and said , ((What's a Hummer John)), the look he gave me was priceless. He just looked back down at my Wrangler and walked away, never seen him for the remainder of the day.

I really hate this. I have heard it so much I am going to explode. first off I like military history and military machinery. so in a since I like things utilitarian. Square and built for a purpose. so I like old flatfender jeeps and even can appreciate the H1 the civilian decendant of the HMMWV. But would rather own a surpluss HMMWV than a hummer H1. I can't stand the H2 or the H3 that are marketed and designed to look utilitaryian but are not. So why is it that everytime something is utilitarian it looks like a hummer. guve me a break. if anything the hummer looks like a overgrown jeep.

Yes the new JK has alot of fancy stuff. but it is a modern SUV. I like it so I will buy it. But don't call it a hummer.

Happened just last night. I went to the tire shop and got a new set of 5. One of the managers started asking me questions stating he wished he had waited instead of getting an Avalanche. He then stated "it kinda looks like a Hummer" and I replied, "no, you can take this off road" and then he said "your right there."

I heard this S*** today. I brought up some of the sema pictures on my computer at work and one of my co-workers says "man that looks just like a hummer!" he said it like 5 more times. I looked at him and said "nah you could take this offroad" he continues to tell me that hummer has the best suspension for offroad use and there is nothing better than an H2. I can't argue with someone this ignorant so I just tell him ok you go buy your H2 I'll get the Jk and we'll go to the Badland's off road park and I'll tow your ass through the trails.:yup:

Funny, the similarity of these vehicles may have served to my advantage last Friday night. I was in Royal Oak, Michigan and forgot(?) to feed the parking meter. I was a little frustrated when I found the ticket on my windshield but had to laugh when I read the vehicle description: "Hummer." I glanced around to see if there was one close by...

Thats good because, how can they justify the ticket if they cant tell the make of vehicle? They cant really prove it was you unless they go by liscence plate. Even if, its a badly written ticket. It must have been a hummer.

Soooo, I actually traded in my H2 for my new JK. I liked the looks of the H2 (still do) and have taken it off-road plenty -- not anything hardcore but off-road none-the-less. I think that the JK and H2 don't really look much alike except for the grill and sharp angles - and the 4 doors. They do look a little bit similar to an H1 which I have seen without a top. As far as the H3 goes, there is really no comparison - can't stand the H3.

We also have a Jeep Commander and when the H2 and Commander were parked next to each other, some lady asked if the little Hummer was for my wife and the big hummer was for me.

When I bought my H2 a couple of years ago, I really wanted the Unlimited but it didn't have five seatbelts and I ended up getting a used H2.

Anyway, I actually had someone say "Cool Jeep" about my H2 a while back. I'm not insulted either way.

Little awkward  . Just kidding. I really think they look nothing alike. The H1 and Jeeps (with the right tires) both look like Urban Assault vehicles :yup: but the H2 just looks like a big shoe box on a Suburban frame. Not knocking 'em, I'm sure they get plenty dirty - cough - picking the kids up from soccer practice. haha:rotflmao1:

I don't even have a Jeep yet.......so, I can't really say anything about which is better.

Well I like the Jeep better so far. Its much lighter and gets better gas mileage on the hwy - at least the 90 miles on the hwy I have put on it. I have only had it a few weeks and have done some really light off-roading with it. I will say though that I bottomed-out my H2 in a spot near my house that the Jeep went over with no problem at all. The H2 did have running boards on it at the time though.

Oh yeah - the H2 used cost $10K more than the Jeep brand new and I actually made money selling the last Wrangler I owned.

When we get a jeep now we say a jeep is a jeep do I want more room then I can get a unlimited I just got one and love it 07 unlimited its not going to be easy to find a comparable suv. please do not compare it to an h3.

I take exception when someone brings up this argument. It is very presumptuous for someone to assume to know what my income or net worth may be. I was really irritated by the comment that a hummer driver called it a “poor man’s hummer”.

Personally, I am fortunate enough that I could have purchased a hummer if I had wanted. However, regardless of how much money I may or may not have the hummer would not be my first choice, it wouldn’t even be in the top ten. I wouldn’t say I hate them, they do just not impress me and I’ve never even considered owning one.

The Jeep is the original and the Wrangler is the king of off-road utility, off the show room floor. My opinion is that if the hummer hadn’t stolen the classic Jeep slotted grill there wouldn’t be this discussion. So many SUV’s resemble each other it’s crazy. How many times have you looked into your rear view mirror and you can tell right off, “Oh, it’s a Ford…it’s the Dodge honey-comb…” You see the slotted grill on the hummer and you do a double take before you realize it’s the imitator.

I’m sure there are many folks on the board who could buy a hummer if they wanted to; they simply have no desire to own one.

I had the top off and the doors off today and I still got the comment twice within an hour. On the plus side, the day before with the sunrider folded back and the doors on, about 5 people commented on it at Subway, and all new it was a Jeep. Maybe people are coming around.

Two older ladies that were about 75 were talking to each other as they walked by it, and one lady said to the other, "is that a hummer" and the other one said, "no its a jeep, see the top is folded, hummers cant do that"

As I was driving our babysitter home the other night, she remarked that her dad (currently driving a 2005 Wrangler) was looking to get a new vehicle (an H3). What she said was "my dad's been wanting a Hummer for four years".

Since she is in HS, I suppressed the urge to say something witty (maybe FR can take her to the Prom?), and instead I told her to have her dad come check out my JK.

I told her to tell him: An H3 is what you use if you don't want to go off road. She said she liked the JK better (especially since the roof comes off) and that she'd try to get him to check out the JK as well.

Just a report from the 757...

Here you go, use these at your own discretion...

1 : "The're called Hummers because they suck"

2 : A person says, "I see you bought a poor mans hummer.

The #1 best reply for this is "What's a hummer???".

Here are some others...

A - "It's not a poor mans hummer, it's a nature lover's convertable.

B - "What does Fellatio have to do with my Jeep?"

C - "Were you watching? I didn't think we could be seen.

One of my Army buddies has an H2 and I pranked him one day. I hooked up a tow strap between his bumper and mine in the parking lot. He parks it in the back of the lot to avoid dings on his bling. That helped a bit. Put a little pile of gravel under his rear tire (I.E. he got "Stuck") all that he could do was look at the ground and laugh when he saw it. There are a lot of jeepers in the Army. No doubt there was plenty of appreciation for it. :)

When I get a "it looks like a Hummer" from someone, I give a puzzled look and say "I think it looks like a Mercedes G class, don't you?" Since hardly anyone has ever seen a G class, we get back to talking Jeep. If we make it to the front of the vehicle and they ask (pointing to the tow hooks), "what are those for?", I answer "to pull Hummers out of the mud".

It is amazing to me that a brand like Jeep that has been around for 60+ years is not what people first think of when they see a JK.

I ordered a Sahara Unlimited, and everyone that sees one on the street makes that Hummer comment to me. I don't really care, I don't think it's a bad thing. The Hummer essentially took the boxy philosophy of the Jeep and made it into a luxurious, appealing package to the world's population. The G-wagon from Benz is too expensive, and boxy Land Rovers (like the Defender) are hard to find. Since Hummer beat Jeep to the finish line with a 4-door 4WD box, it's only natural that the comparisons will be made. Anyways, my brother has the H3 and it's a fine vehicle. Does what it's supposed to: gets through deep snow, hauls his groceries, he feels good in it because it's not a minivan.

Everyone knows Jeep, it's just that Hummers wound up in the public eye quickly and suffered from overexposure in rap videos and celebrity tabloids.

Most people I know (laypeople, they don't know anything about off-roading or which brands outperforms what) seem to routinely make the following assumptions:

1. Jeeps are rugged outdoorsy vehicles that go-anywhere/do anything. Most people know that the Jeep progenitors played some role in defeating the Third Reich.

2. Hummers are basically show vehicles, but most people anecdotally think the H1 is unstoppable.

3. Land Rovers are expedition vehicles for the African Serengetti or Kenyan lion reserves.

i'm not really sure why everyone is so anti hummer. i understand you loving jeeps but deep down inside everyone would agree the original h1s are pretty bad ass and the h3s are actually quite capable 4x4s. the h2s do suck however.

i don't have my jk yet, but i really could care less if someone said it looks like a hummer, odds are they're driving some lame ass camry.

:edit: here's a quick comparison of a 4 door rubi and an h3, neither of them are mine. if it's yours and you don't like me using your photos let me know and i'll remove them.:
http://www.allangreendale.net/dump/jk-h3.jpg

of course we know the difference in an h3 and a jeep but from the outside looking in it's easy to see the similarities. for example at first glance i would think the hyundai sonata looks exactly like a kia spectra but the kia owner would not. apples and oranges, i know but you get the point. hopefully.

No, (It's not a poor man's hummer) It's a Rich Man's Jeep!!!

Hummers are ridiculous vehicles that serve a singular purpose: To look good, and get attention. When it comes to actually being able to GO off-road, they fall pretty flat on their face (not to mention that most of their owners will never SEE off-road conditions).

Jeeps, on the other hand, are versatile vehicles that serve multiple purposes. They can look good, but when it comes to off-roading, the Jeep is KING (the Hummer is a drag queen, at best).

one guy, a hummer driver told me i bought the jeep b/c i couldnt afford a hummer...

i told him

"you paid twice as much for a fixed door/fixed roof vehicle with small windows... but, if i looked like you, i would not want anyone to see me either."

and the the little ricer cars that love to fly by and cut you off just to come to a stop at the red light where you pull up next to them...

"yeah... if i drove a piece of shit like that, i would drive fast so no one could see it was me. Life will get better one day, dont worry little guy"

Air Force had the originals. Got to drive a few variations, for the intended purposes they worked alright, but overall they where heavy, slow, rode like a surfboard on buzz strips, took half of south korea to turn around, would get stuck going downhill on gravel (I did it), and the milage was horrible.

They took a crash well though, had one t-bone a chevy panel van, dumped the van on its side & twisted it all to hell.

broke the turn signal on the hummer.

Just paint or line-X the top of the doors and it looks like a jeep again

http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/6870/whitejk4rubi640ji1.jpg

This looks great. When I get mine in (looks like it will be 08). I think I'll get a quote from a sign shop to wrap the door frames to look like this, probably not very expensive. Also it is reversable if i change my mind.
If anyone else does this first I would love to see pictures.

While I might agree that it does look better with the hard top on, I think it would look mighty silly if you took the top off and left the doors on. I haven't bothered to play with photoshop to see what it looks like without the top, but I'll bet it looks, well, odd.

I think it already lookd=s odd with the top down and full doors on. this mod would just make it look like it had soft uppers but you would still have the glass windows.

Slim, dark haired with blue eyes that looked straight into mine letting me know I was the only person in the room, she sat down on the stool next to mine. After taking a sip of wine she said, "So you bought a new car. What did you buy?"

I told her of my new JK Unlimited.

"Oooo," She said dreamily, "The one that looks like a little hummer."

Although I knew that wasn't the only thing close by that looked like one, I kept my thoughts to myself.

Now anytime anyone says that, all I can do is grin in reminiscence.:yup:

I can see the h3/h2 comments, I just happen to prefer the JK. I paid for mine in cash and had enough to buy an h2 new. A friend of mine at the gym I go to has one and I've driven hers. It drives remarkably nicely, it's got a nice interior and well I personally enjoy seeing a hot blonde driving any type of truck, especially one with a name like hummer. lol In the end I went with the JK because it was a tad smaller (try parking a hummer in DC), get's better gas mileage, has more options with what you can do with it (top off, etc, etc). I don't think most people mean any harm when they say it looks like a hummer, unless as a few people stated it's a hummer owner saying that you bought a poor man's hummer. At that point I'd refer him to my rear license plate holder, it reads "I'd rather be... Choking you out." nagafighter.com

And frankly as mentioned in 2 posts it looks much more like a Benz G Wagon than it does a Hummer.

I had someone walk right past the Yellow H2 I was parked next to yesterday while shopping to come over and compliment my JK with the top down and safari doors on.

One thing I would note is that I see a lot of unique jeeps here in Colorado, but I don't see many beyond-stock hummers (other than lifts and bigger tires).

needless to say , my dad is in love with hummers
when i told him over the phone that i had bought a new jeep
he kinda gave me the sigh over the phone (YOU BOUGHT ANOTHER JEEP)
But any ways me and the wife pull into my parents drive way and say our hellos
(the entire time my dad couldnt take his off off the jeep)
so i gave him the tour of the cockpit and all the features ie lockers ,disco, sunrider
and so on
by the time we were done the tour he sheepishly asks me if i had a business card
for the dealership (i did of course)
in short hes coming into the city this weekend to pick up a new jeep

We need some great come-back lines!

i get this all the time too. just tell them that actually, a hummer LOOKS LIKE A JEEP!!! like the classic, 'which came first, the chicken or the egg' is debateable. but i'm sure we all kno which is the chicken in this argument...

Should just have a bumper sticker that simply states:

So wether you are rolling with the top down, or doors off, or both, or taking it through the trails, They will know who has the superior vehicle!

To make matters worse since this was a hummer only dealership, that means someone traded in their unlimited for a hummer.

I do have to say that one of my old time favorites is the H1. It's rugged and has amazing payload capacity.

No, it's not a Jeep and it probably won't go as far in certain terrains, while in others it will.

As for drivers, I think most Hummer, especially, H2 and H3, drivers are the most brain washed bunch of ignorant idiots. NOT ALL, JUST MOST.

It's actually funny, when we were doing a fairly easy trail close to town, one that we had done dozens of times in our lifted Liberties, we came across a real estate agent taking his H2 through. He pulled up beside us and said that he wouldn't recommend we go there with Jeeps. Ya, I know it's Liberties, but believe me our Liberties have been on many trails that many Wranglers hav't been on.

But moral of the story, is the guy didn't have a clue what he was doing cause the trail was easy. He had some coin to spend, and he's the guy the advertisers love, because they can make a picture of his truck on Mt. Everest and he'll go around telling people his truck can go there.

Man that sucks for you, Lemon Law it if your dealer doesn't get it right, it's how I replaced my 06 Rubi which was a total POS, figured the last build year they'd have gotten right, whatever total crap. I have had no issues with my 07 Rubi, guess I just got a good batch. The only thing they've had to fix was the rattling clutch and when the front axle started leaking a few drips they replaced the entire front D44 axle.

GM Closing Four Truck and SUV Plants in North America
By TOM KRISHER, AP
Posted: 2008-06-03 09:13:11
WILMINGTON, DEL. (AP) - General Motors Corp. is closing four truck and SUV plants in the U.S., Canada and Mexico as surging fuel prices hasten a dramatic shift to smaller vehicles.

CEO Rick Wagoner said Tuesday before the automaker's annual meeting in Delaware the plants to be closed are in Oshawa, Ontario; Moraine, Ohio; Janesville, Wis.; and Toluca, Mexico. He also said the Hummer brand may be discontinued.

I can see why people think the 4 door resembles a hummer but just remember that the hummer came after the jeep. It just took Jeep way to long to come up with a 4 door wrangler.

I do agree with whom ever posted about it looking like a mercedes g wagon. I would say it looks like that more then anything else.

Personally, I have the "Hummer Recovery Unit" bumper sticker. When someone says that to me, I tell them to look at the sticker, then I tell them:

"That's in case a guy accidentally takes a Hummer Offroad"

:brows:

where'd you get the sticker? been looking for one

Mine says "If I wanted a Hummer, I'd call you sister"
all was well until a chick in the parking lot walked by and said "I am the sister"
Now my wife seems to think I need to remove it:dontknow2:

this thread is about people calling our Jeeps Hummers. We all take offense to it, yet i keep reading all these people REMOVING the Jeep logo off of the grill and other locations. Why are we taking off things that identify our vehicles as Jeeps then getting mad b/c others think it's a Hummer?

I got this comment from a 7 year old kid yesterday for the first time. . . . "Is that a Hummer?"

I told him that it was a Jeep and it was better than a Hummer. I told him that Hummers only look cool but that Jeeps ARE cool. . . Hope I made an impression.
