All I had to do for mine ('99 Sport), was remove the screw from behind the ashtray, pop out the defroster screen to access the two small screws under it then GENTLY start at the bottom with a flathead screwdriver or something similar and work each one of the clips free.
I'm really not impressed with how Jeep only used two srews to secure the factory head unit and both install kits that I've used in the past, plus the one that was in mine when I got it, doesn't hold the aftermarket unit very tight. I mean, it's in there, but there's some play when you push any button in the corners.

First pop out the long panel in between the windshield and the dash.
Then, remove the two top screws.
Next, remove ashtray and the screw behind it.
The whole assembley can then be popped out.
