Ultimately, I want to go with a built-in unit. but for all the wheelin I've done so far, I've gotten great use out of a handheld 40 chnl CB from Radioshack I bought years ago. I am not always crazy about the brand, but here's what I like about this model:

it has a microphone jack so I can just hold the cb-style mike to talk, and it has an antenna jack, so I can also have the benefit of connecting to a proper exterior antenna if I need better range. Off the trail, I store it at home, so no temptation for thieves.

If anybody wants the exact model, PM me. I don't have any idea if they would still carry this model after around 10 years. May be many similar/better around, but what works, works, so I don't have much need to upgrade. Just my two cents...:)

One trip with a cobra 38 hand held and I've decided to scrap it for an installed cobra 75. Problem was I could hear the vehicle directly in front of me and directly behind me, but I couldn't hear the vehicles at the front of the pack or the rear of the pack reliably. This was in a pack of 10 vehicles. Not too big of an issue off road but it made selecting the restaurant on the trip home on the freeway tedious.

I use my hand held wheeling all the time. I have had not one problem with it. I did not wont to hook up more wires to my Jeep or find a place to mount a unit..

I was looking at a Midland 75-822 on the net, and I was set to buy one until I got to the store. I did not like the way it felt, so I passed. I tried my brothers hand held this weekend and ended up handing off the communication duties to my wife so I did not wreck us. I ordered a Cobra 75.

Just curious, but did you check out the Midland 75-820? That's what I used on my bike when I had it. Haven't tried it out in the Jeep yet, but I'd say it'll work just fine. You can add a hand held mic and it also comes with an accessory that you can hook up to the power outlet and an outside antenna. Has always worked well for me.

+1 on the Cobra 75. Doesn't take up any room mounted in the empty space under the glove box, and I can hide the handset when I'm not using it. Works great on the trails and the highways with a large group of jeeps travelling to/from the trailhead.

David at Northridge has a great package deal with everything you need to set it up.

I found a sale on the Cobra, new and shipped for $72 and some change. There is not much out there that will fit in the JK front console and I was tired of looking so I went for it.

Would you mind terribly sharing where you found that price?

I just picked up the Midland 75-822 handheld/vehicle mount. It's a great size and perfect for trailing with the jeep.

It comes with a vehicle adapter that also has an external antenna connector for attaching a whip to give you better range.

Seems like it's a great choice. I'll be using it on the trail this weekend so I'll let you know how well It works.

Cheers,

Vex

Great price! Don't blame you one bit. I've heard a lot of good things about the Cobra radios.

You could have saved me some time if you had posted the Drugstore.com a few days earlier. I just ordered from them on Monday. They did not have the lowest price for the unit, but with free shipping their total price was the lowest. It's scheduled for delivery Friday.

Same here it's a great unit, unfortunately comes with a belt clip instead of a adaptor so that you can mount it on your dash. Someone suggested I use the bracket that sells for the Cobra 75 , but I'm not so sure it will work...not to hi jack the thread but has anyone with the Midland have it mounted on their dash?...if so can you either PM me with a pic or just post it here...thanks ahead...
