Does anyone ride a mountain bike?
Yup. Quite a bit actually. My wife was a little relieved when my attention shifted from bikes to my Jeep for a little while. Believe it or not, my Jeep habit is much less expensive.
Been riding mountain since about `94. Haven`t ridden much lately, but I need to cuz I don`t like my jeep having to haul anymore fat ass than it needs to.:D
Post some pics of those bikes.
This is the bike I ride now. 2008 Intense Socom

I used to have a Cannondale- but I sold it because it was out dated.
(More street worthy than trail worthy)
My spouse has a Rocky Mountain Switch that I have fun on from time to time- ...but I would rather do the trails on foot- I prefer running over trail riding :)

Grew up racing road in Colorado. Switched to Mountain to race on the Fort Lewis College Mountain bike team in Durango Colorado, they win collegiate nationals almost every year. I raced on the non traveling team for one year, left for two years, planned on returning and racing on their traveling team, never did. Now I just ride for fun. Bought a house across the street from trailhead so now I have no excuses. Mountain biking is the reason I have always gravitated to jeeps. They are kind of the same breed, cut from the same cloth.

I'll have to dig around for pics of my current rides, but the list is...
2007 Kona Coilair Supreme
2002 Surly 1x1 singlespeed (my baby, I've had several 100+ mile days on it)
2005 Surly Pacer road bike W/1992 8speed Dura ace
Mid 90's Fat Chance Wicked Lite built as a single speed townie
Mid 90's Bontrager Race Lite Frame (wall art for now)
I just sold quite a few bikes as our apartment is small and they were accumulating too quickly. I agree with Fishit, I think bikes and Jeeps complement each other very well. A lot of the trails I used to ride in the last place I lived were 4x4 access only.
Fishit... I used to race against you guys! I went to Mesa State up in Grand Junction. Only raced on the team for a year, and we were a club sport. The only race I traveled to that year was the Road Apple/Durango race. I'm still pissed about what happened to me in the slalom!
Kntr.... That looks like quite the build on your Socom. What do you think about the strokers? I haven't ridden them yet, as I'm a Shimano fan for brakes, but I've built a few bikes with them on. They felt great out of the box.
I realized that I didn't mention above, I manage a bike shop in Park City. Nice place here, but I miss the riding in the desert.

I do some riding, not as much as I did 10 years or so ago. Still enjoy it though. I have an old GT LTS3000 with lots of upgrades. It's heavy as hell, but pretty rugged. I wish there were some betterplaces to ride around here, btu I'm stuck in flatland Illinois. THere are a couple of nice trail areas nearby, but nothing like what the above pics show. ANyone ever catch that show Drop In on cable? Those guys are insane!
I love the Hayes Strokers. You can adjust them so easily and they modulate a lot better than the old Mags.
I just put the I9 wheels on the Socom last week. They are super light and strong. The bike weighs 38 lbs with the I9s and lighter DH tires. It weighs 41lbs with the heavy DH wheels and heavy DH tires.
Biking has kept me from getting fat. Out of high school I gained 50 lbs. When I started mountain biking in college I lost all 50 lbs in 60 days!! Now I ride to stay in shape and in the off season I work out to stay in shape for bike season. Id be a fat mofo without biking. :)
I bought a flat bar road bike last year and did a lot of road riding until the snow melted. Its Kona Deluxe Dew. Its cheap but it has held up to some rough gravel roads and a lot of road riding.

I love I9 wheels. I've worked on quite a few of them, including a few builds. A very quality product.
My Coilair is about 33 pounds and it's the lightest big bike I've ever had. My everyday XC ride several years ago was a 44 pound Foes Fly. That bike pedaled so well that the weight just didn't seem to matter. Too bad it broke. I replaced that with a Foes FXR and broke that too. No more Foes for me. Since then has been an Azonic Saber, Devinci Johnson, Titus Supermoto, and now the Coilair. I won't waste anyones time with the pre-foes days. Too many bikes to mention!
I actually chanced into bikes after blowing my knee out skiing. It was part of the rehab for the surgery, so I just rode and rode and rode. I'm a complete addict.
By the way... a funny bit of news about Hayes, which is actually HB performance systems. They don't own the name "Hayes." All of the Stroker brakes are being shipped without the Hayes name on them because their partner in Taiwan owns the name and has filed a cease and desist order over violation of intellectual property. Depending on the outcome of the trial, Stroker may be the new name of the brakes for good. Funny world.
Funny, I broke my 2002.5 Foes Fly too. It was my do all bike for a long time. Foes was terrible at replacing it. Terrible customer service!! I had to pay almost the entire amount to get it replaced. Where did yours break?

Where did yours break?
It broke on the monocoque arch that went around the shock. It cracked on the inside of the monocoque and was working its way toward the middle of the arch. There were several Flys in the town where I lived and they all broke. :naw: Yeah, I won't touch a Foes again. Not only did both of their bikes that I owned break in under 6 months, but they tried very hard to not warranty them. All of the FXRs in town broke too. At 155 pounds and 5'11", I shouldn't be breaking bikes like that. Especially not an 8" bike that's meant for hucking. Where did yours break?

Does anyone ride a mountain bike?
I ride a gary fisher paragon 29r with a bunch of work done and my gf rides a gf tassajara gs disc
Mine broke where the seatstay meets the bottom bracket. My warranty card said, replacement warranty was 50% of MSRP. $2200 was MSRP. They wanted to charge me $1800!!! They tried to say the warranty changed. I told them I didnt care if it changed.... I bought it with the 50% MSRP replacement warranty and thats what I wanted. They said no. I ended up talking with Brent Foes and he got the price down to $1550. It was still not what my warranty card said but oh well. I will never buy another Foes either. They lost a customer. I rode the warrantied frame for 2 seasons and sold it.

That's one of the things I've liked about dealing with Fisher/Trek in the past. They warranty ANYTHING. I had a customer give me his old beat to $#it level betty that was cracked. It was 8 years old and fisher still gave me a warranty replacement.

Foes tried to tell me that my FXR breaking was my fault because I'd used too soft of a spring. When I told them that I used a spring that was 50# heavier than suggested, they just looked for another excuse. Come to find out, after they tried to tell me that it was my fault, they had a bad tubing spec on the downtubes. They tried to make me pay for their screw up. The shop I was at dropped Foes after that one. Too bad the company sucks, because the bikes rode really well.

I have not ridden for 6 months due to an injury at work, but I ride both mountain and road religiously. I recently sold a Santa Cruz Blur with high end parts cause I hated to see it sit here not being ridden. Plus it give me an excuse to build up a new one next year. I have a Cannondale F3000SL hard tail to ride until I build up a new one. My road bike is a Serotta Legend Ti. SoCal has some great riding, I'm very lucky. Just can't wait to get over this injury and get back to normal.

Serotta builds such a nice bike. I don't spend enough time on my road bike to justify the expense, but I'd love a nice ti ride.
2K2, that's a nice bike hauler! Have you thought about a hitch rack for it? My mileage went up a ton when I switched to my rear rack. Of course, I pretty much always have my Jeep and a bike with me at all times. I'm obsessed with both, just ask my wife.
kntr, where in Montana are you? I've been up there a few times to visit a friend, do a little back packing, and a little riding. I love that area.

Im in the Kalispell/Whitefish area by Glacier Park. There are tons of trails for mountain biking and tons of paved back roads for road riding. This summer I went on a few 20-30 mile road rides and only saw a couple cars. It was nice. I hardly ever see people when mountain biking, too.

Hey how is moab for a fairly novice rider? my fiance has plenty of bike (that tass in the pic), but she's not a big fan of the woods out here. The tight twisting trails with lots of lifts (over logs and what not). What's moab like? is it more open?
out here i ride these rough cut trails that aren't bench cut, you're sidesliding a lot (why i have a hardtail) and always dealing with tight switchbacks and trees.

Moab has terrain for every ability level. What I will say though, is that there isn't a ton of beginner/intermediate stuff. You can find it if you know where to look, but the classic trails tend to be more along the advanced side of things. Let me know if you want more info on Moab. I'm pretty familiar with the area. :yup:

yeah, thier trails labelled beginner are still pretty tough, a couple easier rides might be the Monitor and Merrimac trail, Bar M Loop, Klondike Bluffs is easy but long and you get to see the dinosaur tracks in the rock..the slickrock is like riding on 180 grit sandpaper..your tires stick and you can climb crazy stuff. I love Moab..or Mecca as I like to refer to it...
Horst was an amazing engineer/designer and definitely one of the innovators in mountain suspension, Ive always had Specialized bikes and love the way they ride, but a couple years ago I bought a Kona Dawg, made one trip to Moab with it and it was an amazing machine, soaked up everthing you could put in front of it..had it two months before some puke walked in my garage and took it and my wifes Trek road bike...insurance company bought my FSR for me...

Ouch... One of my favorite bumper stickers that I've seen said "bike thieves will be shot on sight."
I'm actually on a Kona Coilair right now, and just came off of a Dawg. I loved the Dawg. I had pulled the RP23 that came on it and was running a DHX Air with an extra 1/4" of stroke. It bumped the travel up by a measured .6" and made for an even better riding bike. I had to decide between it and the Coilair, so the Dawg went away. I'll eventually be back on a horst bike, but everyones true 4-bars are so expensive, it may be a while before I decide to swing the cost.
I'm guessing by your ride that you lean more toward the XC side of things. Do you have a bigger hit bike at all? Something like what Kntr has?

Mmmmmmm.... Moab in November. :yup: November is not only my favorite month in that town, but also one of the best kept secrets about Moab. There are a few days that are hit or miss, but for the most part the weather is ideal for riding. 60's to 70's and sunny almost every day. Of course, it depends on what time of the month you head there. We were there during Thanksgiving this past year and we woke up to snow on Friday. :sad2: It melted off pretty fast, but it was chilly. Had we been there a week earlier it would have been great.
Feel free to hit me up anytime about the Moab area!

The 575 is such a great bike! If you haven't seen the redesigned one yet, you should check it out. We had one in here a few weeks ago. They did a great job on it for this year. All hydroformed tubing, stiffer rear end, same plush travel, but the shock mount design is a little better now. They dropped the knuckle that they'd used in previous years that was right in front of the forward shock mount.
That being said, if I were on a 575 I'd probably still wait a little to trade up. The old one is a great bike and not worth getting rid of.

Thanks! Yeah, it has been an amazing ride so far. I got it for almost 50% off when I bought it. I lived in Colorado, and like you dirt, it was just out of my price range. I moved to Kansas City for a job and just happened to find a local shop blowing it out the door. Most people around here are riding hardtails or 29er's and they just couldn't get rid of it. Lucky for me! :yup:

I did finally get to see one in person a couple of months back. It's a great looking bike for sure. I can't help but think that it kinda looks like everything else coming out right now though. It seems that everyone is using the hydro-formed, curvy top tube now. If this design rides as good as my '07 ( I have heard it is better), I will probably upgrade to it when I wear mine out.

Lets see some pics of bikes and riding.
I got my bike ready for the season and Ive been out a couple times. Bike weighs 37.8 lbs. Not bad for a DH bike that I can ride uphill. XC/Epic rides are going to be fun this year.

im riding a 2005 cannondale prophet 800. the funny thing is ...since i moved to colorado ive ridden on more pavement in 3 months then my entire life!!!!!! i had more access to trails back in pa in the philly bburbs then i do living in the rockies. go figue. either every trail here is too steep and not ridable or its still covered in 5 feet of snow. :( i cant waite for summer and hitting up crested butte and stuff but man...im used to riding down the road to state park in pa and not seeing a person or hard road for hours once i hit the trail. i live about 1/2 hour from snowmass/aspen so when that opens it should be fun. now i need a DH ride!!

I have an el cheapo bike that I've racked up over 5K miles on (mostly pavement). I do get to ride a few general use trails, but Ohio is pathetic for dedicated single track (much like off-roading for the Jeep). This is why I am moving to Colorado in a couple years. After the move, one of the first things I'll be doing is buying a decent, trail worthy bike. I'd also like to ride the bike for transportation (something that is quite easy to do in many parts of the Rocky Mountain West) but again not a real option in Ohio.

I'm looking to purchase my first mtn bike - don't want to invest alot of $$$$ - just want to ride xc trails, nothing agressive. I'm thinking about something like a Trek 3700 or Trek 4300. Any advice or recommendations on an entry bike?

'nuther MTBer here. I ride an old-school Fat Chance steel hardtail that's been through several build-ups including XC race and singlespeed. Curently running LX, slight risers, Skarebs and USTs as a light trail bike. Always tempted to upgrade to a dually but for the riding I do (all hilly, flicking, switchy singletrack), my trusty Fat puts a smile on my dial every time.

IF frame... very nice indeed. Still nothing as supple as a steel frame that is well made with thin tube walls and custom fit for the rider. Hope the new rig treats you well. I'm too short to enjoy the benefits of a 29'r
That being said, I ride a Specialized Epic dual suspension. Even out here with the east coast's rocks and roots it has held up great with countless hours on some serious trails. I treat it more as a trail bike than a cross country racer and it has served me very well although I am on the lighter side. That may be helping it out a bit. My other ride is an old Specialized M2fs hardtail. As far as all the "big" manufacturers, I can only report nothing but great luck with Specialized.

Well, I almost added another bike to my fleet--an Intense M6. Unfortunately, I tore the MCL in my left knee on the demo ride a week and a half ago. :banghead:
Now I'm going to hold off on buying it until the Spring when the '09s come out. It really sucks walking by my Slayer in the garage and not being able to take it up to the top of the local hill--or even just go for a spin in the cul-de-sac. As long as my ACL isn't torn too, I'm hoping to be back on the Slayer on low-torque flat stuff by mid-August.
Until then, the JK will be my only way to get out into the woods. I guess life's not too rough, but I really do miss getting out and riding.

I had a bad crash this weekend in Fernie BC. I got knocked out for about 30sec-1min. I have/had a stage 1 concussion. Oh well, its my first concussion. We leave for Whistler on Friday for a week. I hope Im good to go by then. The vision is a little off still, but the nausousness and dizzyness are gone. I fell off a 10-12ft stunt and landed on my head and back. I went over the handlebars. I broke my NEW carbonfiber $400 helmet... first ride with it too. I still love moutnain biking and this is not going to stop me. I love it. BTW the bike made it through without a scratch.

We are only staying here in Silver Star for 3 days. I will be in Whistler 4 days untill Sat. We are leaving before Crank Worx. We usually hit the Shore, but my wife is with me on this trip. She has a hard time on the Shore.... who doesnt though? ;) I will be back in Sept on a guy trip though. What day will you be in Whistler?

I'm still trying to figure out when my buddies are free for whistler, but I will most likely be up there for at least one day next week. I remember it took me a little while to get myself back together after my big crash/concussion, i was KO'ed for almost 2 minutes, and do not remember anything. I dont think i got back on the bike for about 10 days or so after it happened, and I remember still being off for a little while....even if you're feeling alright it takes a mental toll on you as well.

I had a concussion last year at a new DH park where I used to live. Went over the handlebars and konked for about a minute. My buddy's GPS said that we were doing about 30-40kph, I believe it.
Bike was fine, cept for the seat (WTF?!?) was toast, as was my helmet. Thank God for Oakley polycarb lenses, probably saved my left eye.
Truth be told, I probably shouldn't have gone that day, I'm used to XC riding (riding a '07 Rocky Mountain Fusion hardtail) but a buddy wanted to try out the new hill and I was dumb enough to join him. Now I stick to XC, till I get a good DH bike.

For all you crazy mountain bikers, if you need a way to haul a lot of bikes, here's what I did. I'm going to be taking the Boy Scout troop on a 80 ride next year and needed a way to haul the bikes the trail head and back home again.
Equipment:
Warrior Products Safra rack system
1 - 8' 2x4 (cut in half)
7 - Fork Blocks (pick up truck bed style)
4 - U bolts (can't remember the size)
14 - 2.5" x 9/16" bolts with flat washers & locking washers
Attach the blocks 8" apart, 4 will go on one 2x4 and 3 on the other. Be sure to stagger them.
Use the U bolts to attach to the bottom bar of the rack, tighten good, but not so much that you crack the wood.
I use velcro straps to hold the rear wheel down, but have found that it will slide side to side, so still working on a better way to secure the back.
The only issues I've come across have been handle bars of certain bikes don't line up, so I loosen one bar and adjust the angle, so they don't rub. As mentioned above the rear tire sliding. the outside bikes are easy sa I just strap them to the side. lastly, watch out for low branches and drive thru's. With the bikes on, I'm just over 9' tall.
I've done some tough trails with 4 bikes and have had no issues with them coming loose, just make sure the forks are tight and use heavy duty velcro it you use that.

I bought a bunch of parts and built myself up a new full suspension bike. I am not a downhill rider, I enjoy getting out on long rides and climbing against my pals from work. I hope this one lasts as long as my last bike which I have been riding for over ten years. Turner is coming out with a new suspension design so I got a killer deal on this frame! The ride is awesome! I am very happy with it.

I ride a 2006 Banshee Scirocco. Been riding for about 15 years and have just gone back to a hardtail after many years on a fully. I find I am riding much less DH than I used to and the uphills were getting too rough with a 46lb bike!
We did a big ride yesterday on BIG bikes. Here are a few pics of why we ride BIG bikes for XC. We did 2 miles of carry/push for 10 miles of awesome DH.

What are your opinions on buying a used mtn bike? I'm trying to get back into biking after about 6-7 years - need to find a fun hobby to keep me going. I would have spent $700-800 on a bike (nothing too fancy). I've found a nice used 2008 model Trek 6500 - more bike than I would purchase new. Bike is in great shape - owner just prefers road bikes. He's selling for $800 with clipless pedals. Bike retails for $1,149 without the pedals. Bike looks new.
Thoughts?
You can get used bikes for great deals. It sounds like you should offer him a little less though.

Oh man, I just cancelled my M6 order. They were pissed. I was going to build a works blue, 888, CCBD, I9s, Hammer Schmidt, etc. Yes, I said Hammer Schmidt. I have to still pedal up sometimes. I just could justify it. I want a Hemi first.. The Socom will have to do.

Bike came in at 41.5 lbs.

Yep. My 2001 Rocky Mountain RM6 is 38lbs. The M6 is definitely harder to pedal uphill than the RM6 though. I've had the RM6 at the top of Porcupine Rim and Amasa Back. Not sure I'd want to pedal (push) the M6 to the top of those. Of course, I could always find someone with a Jeep...

The nuts on the bearings on my Slayer stay tight. Maybe I'm just not riding it hard enough. :)

Thanks. I definitely like the Intense works finishes. I briefly looked at the V10, but my preferred dealer isn't a Santa Cruz dealer and I've wanted an Intense of some sort or another for a few years now.

Alright...I've been looking around and wanting to get a XC Recreational bike(newbie). I live in Louisiana and no crazy down hill mt trails, but got some nice places to ride. I'm looking at a Rocky Mountain Trailhead, Rocky Mountain Fusion or a Specialized Rockhopper Comp Disc! Any advise on these or any other models in this range?? Thanks!

Nice bikes here, I'm looking to get back into biking, I used to ride BMX street and some flatland.
Any tips for choosing a size?
I'm looking at a Specialized Rockhopper, seems like it would be fine for running the trails around here.
I'm thinking 17" or 19", I'm 5'8" with a 30" inseam.
Thanks.

I'm 5'10" and I ride a 17" Gary Fisher Tassajara. I love my bike and it's great for the trails in LI. If I were you I would definately stick with the 17" and don't get sold on a 19" that a store has in stock. A smaller bike is easier to control on the trails. If you were going to ride the boardwalk or streets then I would go bigger. Go to Brands in Wantgh to check out their large selection to find what you want, then you can look at other stores on the Island to find a good deal.

I am no expert by far, but my earlier post of the Rock Hopper, that thing is great. I had so much fun on the trails I did not think of any pics. Broke it in today at Pocahontas State park today. 8,000 acre park that offers miles of trails and a couple of single tracks with lots of hills. Money well spent.

Just picked up my new bike for the season today. Brand new Trek Fuel EX7. Got it for $1500 since it's a left over '08. Going out to Anaheim, CA for two weeks for work and plan to head to some local trails there as well as a trip to Joshua Tree or Yuca Valley area to break it in and get back into riding. Been away from it for about two years.

Got out a couple of times this winter. Snow, Ice, and Rocks = Scary Fun
I need some better lights though. I have some older NiteRider halogens.
I just read a test of 20-30 lights and the Nite Flux Photon Max won. Its about a $300-$350 light and it beat $1000-$1500 lights!! I bought one and holy crap is it bright. A few weeks ago they came out with a Nite Flux Photon Max EXTREME. From what I have heard it is amazing and around $350-$400. I might get the Extreme and give the other one to the wife. Night riding is a blast with a good light. I thought my old halogen lights were good till I got the Nite Flux. It blows it away. Get one. :)

What type of brakes? Some brakes have an adjustment screw to fine tune pad spacing. Also, if you just bought the bike, your dealer should be able to help.

Hey everyone. Looking to get into mt. biking. Done a little riding when I was over in okinawa. though I only had a cheapy $100 department store bike to use I still had a blast. Had an accident, almost broke my wrist and messed up the bike pretty good and switched over to road bikes. I currently own a Giant OCR 3 that I bougth while in japan. Tryin to ride a road bike in southern MS is asking to die young....no one there cares and I have literally been ran off the road, yelled at, had things thrown at me, ect, ect. So I'm looking to get into the mt. scene instead. Any one have any suggestions on a good entry level bike? Price range im lookin in is around 500-800. I havnt been able to find any bike shops in the area and would like some suggestions. Thanks for any info you all can provide.

Haven't been riding trails long but really enjoy it. My Boy Scout troop adopted the mountain bike course at our local scout ranch in order to keep it in usable shape. I've ridden it quite a few times. I do ride about 24 miles a week around my neighborhood (just on the road) to keep the body fat in check.
I've got a Mongoose Blackcomb. I went with this one because of the price and the ability to completely replace everything with aftermarket when I decide to.

Steel Is Real! Surly Karate Monkey 29er on WTB WeirWolf's 2.55" wide! Bontrager Duster Tubeless Rims, by www.lacemine29.com, with the custom matching spoke nipples. Sitting pretty on a WTB Laser V saddle on an easton carbon seatpost. I'm cranking up the hills on my CrankBrothers EggBeaters on the Deore triple crank. When the going gets rough, my RockShox Reba SL with Lockout and Uturn adjustment gets me from 80mm to 100mm of travel, and I can throw it in a power gear on the SRAM X.9 rear derailleur and shifters. Since the party's no fun when you are about to crash, a 185mm Rotor with mechanical Avid BB7's shuts it down front and back before I'm eating pine. I love the way steel bikes ride. I still have my old school fully rigid Nishiki from the early 90s because I love the way it rides. When I bought my current bike (Fisher HKEK), I was really looking for a steel hardtail, but I was in school at the time and I couldn't justify the extra money. Oh well, its a good bike and I still have my steel beater that I ride around town.
I've spent way more money rebuilding that bike than its worth. :rotflmao1:

I'm 5'11". The new 29ers have better geometry and are more responsive, almost like a 26. I've heard of some smaller people riding them, but at 6'1'', you're golden. It's a little harder getting going on inclines, but the bigger wheels outweigh everything else.

i'm 6'3" and the 29er thing just wasn't for me. I really like the more aggressive head tube angle geometry which is adjustable on the new bike. I also felt like i was too high. the BB felt like it was way off the ground (which was awesome for log lifts but sucked for slow technical rocky sections)
for commuting/road i have a 68 schwinn super sport (yes 1968!!) that was my grandfather's. Steel brazed. 700C wheel conversion, converted to euro BB so it has modern 3 piece cranks, bull bars, bar end brakes, friction shifters. I love it.
