Hello fellow geocacher!! A bunch of us SoCal folks make it a point to geocache whenever we get the chance on trail runs. :yup: I started in 2005 when I was searching for a GPS and found the Groundspeak forums.

Okay...so where did Geocaching originate? Where is the first Geocache?

Right here in Oregon!:yup: Hard to believe we've been doing this 3 years in January. Kids have really grown.:rotflmao1:

Okay...so where did Geocaching originate? Where is the first Geocache?
Geocaching started over a century ago in it's more primitive form, "letterboxing", where people would hide boxes of treasures and give clues to others as to how to locate them. It involved stamping a logbook of sorts with the finder's personal stamp, as well as stamping the finder's personal logbook with the stamp contained in the treasure box. Letterboxing still exists. However, when president Clinton turned off selective availability, it brought a new twist to the game. Once more accurate GPS technology was available for civilian use, it wasn't very long at all (a few months) before Dave Ulmer went out and hid a stash, marking the coordinates on his GPS receiver and posting them on an online bulletin board for others to find! The first finder of that stash was Mike Teague, who eventually hooked up with Jeremy Irish and formed a site that eventually became geocaching.com.

The "original stash" no longer exists... however, the "Un-Original Stash" was hidden in the same location as a tribute and can still be found here (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=29aa860e-48f1-47ec-9efe-6af679f8ff61) and a commemorative plaque has been erected here (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=a79d6f50-74a6-4c85-b18c-86dd8b7313ab) (see RugbyDuck's pics above!). :)

Very cool that you've been to the first stash, RugbyDuck-- I was there before I was a geocacher... gotta go back!

I've been doing it for 6 weeks. Got my GPS on Halloween. I'm ZoomZoomJr (surprise, surprise). Probably about 10 in a 15 mile radius. I will try to see if there are any in the camp site I will be visiting in a week. Anyone know of any in Kiln, Mississippi?

Well I started caching in '04 but got kinda bored with it after while. I go by Habercacher. I think I actually had more fun reading the posts from fellow cachers trying to find my hides! Anyway, I still trade my handmade coins occasionally. And you never know, maybe soon I`ll get back into it...(hint, hint, Matthew & Tina). :D

Just about anything will do these days. I have a Sport Trax I use. Kill two birds with one stone and get a programmable portable nav unit for the Jeep. I just picked up a Mio 230 from Radio Shack for $150 on sale. Programmable and portable too!:yup:

I signed up a few weeks ago. The mid-atlantic area here on the East Coast is rich with caches, though that's not to say other parts of the states don't have their fair share. I got my fiancee into caching just this past weekend. For the previous couple weeks of doing it on my own, she thought it was a little weird. That was, until she found her first cache on Saturday. Sunday morning she asked, "Are we going to hit a couple caches today?" :rotflmao1:

And I got my brother and 2 co-workers hooked, too. :yup:

And yep, you guessed it, I'm "castle228" on geocaching.com.

My husband thinks this is the ultimate in geekiness, but he has to admit that I've taken him to some really cool places that I only knew about because a geocache was hidden there. :D The jeep has really helped going after some of the tougher terrain ratings...I'm on a quest to fill in my D/T matrix, and looking for a 5/5!

Man am I really getting slammed around here lately. :naw: I can assure you Rubgyduck that I am not gay (unless you mean happy). :rotflmao1: Not that there's anything wrong with that...

By "outed" I meant that my husband thinks geocaching is only for geeks and he doesn't like me to publicly admit that I know anything about it (He says he thought he married the "cool chick" and found out that I'm a closet geek :eek2:). However, ctimrun already posted embarrassing pics in another thread of the lengths I'll go to to find a cache when I fell down a steep cliff and they had to use a tow rope to haul me back up because it was too steep to climb. :rotflmao1:

My geocaching name is "instantclogger", same as on this forum. My husband and I started caching last June. We love it and are so addicted!
I had run across the term "geocaching" after getting a gps receiver for my pocket pc and decided to look it up. That was all it took. I was hooked before we even found any. We just got our 300th find a couple weekends ago. We have hidden 20 and are about to hide one that would require some offroading to get to it.

I started geocaching in '02, in pasadena califonia, with a crappy gps receiver that never let me find anything; and no-one could find the cache I hid either.

My GF, her daughter and I just restarted this year, with a less crappy, fairly accurate gps receiver. We're 2 days to 2 weeks behind Castle228 on every cache we've found so far. :D

Just signed up last night and used the same name kidjeep. I just got my Garmin Trail Guide a couple weeks ago, so maybe this weekend I'll go exploring with the kids. I found a couple interesting ones to look for around town here too! I'm hoping my 5 year old daughter enjoys it and it may be a way to get the family out in the JK more!

My caching name is Lakebum also. I started caching in 2005 and have been hooked since.

I usually cache in my Jeep Cherokee, but when the top comes off it will be with my JK all the way.

For those of you interested there is a Jeep thread on the geocaching forum that has some pretty good Jeep pictures.

http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=150677

This is my Cherokee at a cache near Lake Lanier. We were driving along the shoreline. There should be about 20 feet of water where my jeep is in this picture. the tree in the background should be under water.
Sorry I don't have any caching pictures of my JK yet.

hmmm, I remember looking into it a while back, and reading up on it every so often. Then college and lack of funds...

A thread like this has piqued my interest and have been looking at setting up the JK with better GPS. I'm sure I'll need a handheld too though.

Any suggestions on how to get started? Probably gonna start in the East Coast / Mid-Atlantic area.

Should I make it to Oregon again, I'm sure I'll spend a day or two looking there too.

Hey Crux...

I just recently got into geocaching. I first heard about geocaching on this forum. When we travel, I try to look up a couple of geocaches ahead of time. We've found quite a few travel bugs and some geocoins and enjoy moving them along and looking for more. When I first got into it, my husband thought it sounded kind of stupid, but now he's kind of into it too. We've started a few travel bugs of our own. I use the same user name as here...

Go to Geocaching.com and log in. You will need to register a geocaching name and password, but it is free.

Once in, you can enter your zip code and find the caches in your area. You go to the specific cache pages, get the GPS coords and you are on your way.

Some cachers have done caches without a GPS, but I think it would be pretty difficult. You pretty much need a hand help GPS of some sort. Preferably one you can enter the coords into and it will point you to that location. A simple Garmin Etrex for under a $100 will get you there. They get more expensive as you add features like turn by turn directions.

Caching has gotten me out to some really cool places. If you are looking for a reason to head off into the woods or go for a hike this is a fun, easy reason to do so.

for starting out (to see if you like it) the e-trex is not a bad unit. If you really like it you can get some models with more features, like color, street maps, turn by turn

Me and my wife cache under the name "K and J", we've been doing such since July of 06. Her father introduced us to it and we've been having fun combining a Jeep with geocaching, there are so many fun caches that we have been able to find thanks to the Jeep.

I started caching 5 and a half years ago when I was not working. In other words, laid off. I went out just about every week the first year, but dropped off a bit later. WhenI started working full time, I pretty much forgot about it. Two years ago, my daughter and I went out to the Grand Canyon and did around 20 caches in West TX, NM, CO, and AZ. I haven't been out since. Now that I have a Jeep, I'd like to go out again. Oh yeah, my screen name is not what it is here; it's Centex Trekker.

My family and I found our first two caches last week. We had a blast!

Our name at Geocaching.com is "jeep-olllllo" .

FWIW we use a TomTom one. It is sort of "the best of both worlds" in that it is great in the car and pretty good out of the car as well. The biggest out of the car complaint is the two hour battery life it has. But during our two finds so far we have only been out of the car for about an hour each.

Sunweasels here. Naturally we had a friend who... Okay, you all know the story. First find with him hooked us, we went out with him three times and then we were hunting all over town for a Garmin eTrex Legend. Been casual Geocahers ever since (he's a radical one, anyone who bases airline flights on what airports have caches he hasn't logged is radical...). I've got 12 caches in easy walking distance of my house (and I'm out of shape) so I'm in relatively rich territory. If some of them weren't gosh danged micros it'd be great!

Come to think of it, if this weekend isn't too hot and we can keep the top down, it's about time to grab a few. :)

I geocache under run43v3r. I've been doin it for a while, but didn't start logging until Dec '07 after I got the JK. Still pretty bad at loggin them, and never seem to remember to bring my own pen.
I had kinda dropped it and the "JEEP" geocache's I learned about after getting the jeep got me back into it. Still haven't found a jeep bug though, they are quite elusive. Kinda ticked off about that, so I made my jeep into its own bug.

If you see her on the road, you can log her as a find.

Great sport that gets you out, gets you active, anyone who tries it gets addicted, and best of all, it really takes to some neat places you'd prob never venture to otherwise

Too bad you're not up here in SW PA, I picked up a Jeep TB the other day and deposited it into another one a couple of miles away. I know there's a couple more around here somewhere! That's really cool that you made your jeep a TB. I would have never thought of that.

I fisrt heard about Geocaching about 5 years ago when I registered my Garmin Etrex Legend online. I was using the GPSr for re-locating hunting blinds I had set up in the woods. About a year ago one of my co-workers started talking about it and I got interested in learning more. I now have the 60csx and find it doesn't lose sat reception in deep cover like the Legend did. Thursday I pick up my ultimate geocaching tool... a 2008 Sahara!

But after reading more and more on this site and others I became interested and bought a GPSMap 76csx on sale. I'm Scoobie over at GC.com. 799 cache finds ago on May 12th, 2003, I found my first cache (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=5c031784-421d-405e-9cfc-26e3290da581) (without a GPS). I had just read an article in Time Magazine about Geocaching. I was so intrigued that I jumped up, pulled up the site and searched for caches in my area. I didn't think there would be many since I'm in a very rural community in Southern Illinois, but was suprised to see several listed. The first one I saw was at a very small rest area on my way to work. The next day, I stopped off and took a look around. There were only a few trees and ten minutes later I found my first cache. I was hooked. I drove to work and ordered my first GPSr.

A few years ago, several of us got together and pitched in to have the plaque that you see in post #6, creatred and placed to remember the firest cache placement.

I started caching in 2003 and with the same name as here over at GC.com.

My cachemobiles have included...starting from most recent....2008 Jeep wrangler, 2005 Yamaha FZ6, 2004 BMW F650GS, 2003 BMW 325i, and a 1998 Dofge Ram 1500.

I found caching in march 2003 on a rainy Saturday when I was bored and searched the web for things to do with a GPS.

It could be a number of reasons why you didn't find a few of them.

Could be that the hiders has coords off a bit....gpsr's are not an exact science. Many times I have had error of 70+ feet on the gps due to cloud cover, trees, buildings etc.

Sometimes there is a difference between brands of GPSR's. Magellen vs Garmin. Each could be side by side and have 10+ difference of coords.

Maybe a previous cacher moved the cache to where "this is a better spot" or "this is where the original hider must have meant". Caches do tend to walk.

Or it could have been muggled. Meaning stolen by someone.

These are just a few more often reasons.

I started in 2005, slow at first then it got to the point I just had to get more and more. The Jeep sure has helped on those caches out in the desert where cars don't go.

found my first cache today! it was fun and a great way to get outdoors. I couldn't find a few though..not sure what the deal was.

:thinking:ya know that's going to happen every so often, they just seem to grow legs for some reason. Muggles find them, take the stuff that's in the container and throw the container away so then you end up with a DNF (Did Not Find). Don't let that discourage you, just have fun. :)

Hi all,

I am JKK450 on GC. I just started yesterday and my kids and I found our first three caches. We started as a result of reading this thread!!! That's right, on Friday I was reading through this thread, then went over to GC to read up on it more. We already had a GPSr that my wife uses so I borrowed it, loaded it with about 20 locations that are close to my house, and yesterday morning the kids and I hit the road.

I can't tell you how much fun it was when we found our first geocache. We forgot to bring something to trade, so the kids were a little bummed that I would not let them take one of they toys with them. But we went back to the house to get trading stuff for our second find. My daughter brought a little easter egg as her trade, but the second find was a micro and not large enough to fit the egg into! She was crushed and cried for about 10 minutes. So we went back to the house again and picked up a selection of stuff. We hit the jackpot with our third cache. It was larger and contained about 10 kids toys. I told them they could trade one of their items for one of the items in the cache. They sat on the ground for about 5 minutes trying to decide what to trade. It was a ball!

I live near some trails off Lake Grapevine in the DFW area. I am going to head into the woods with my mountain bike today to see if I can find some of the caches out there.

My Jeep, my bike, some nice trails, a few geocaches, and writing about it (http://www.mytwitterblog.com/2009/01/geocashing.html) on my blog. It doesn't get much better than that!

Thanks again! I'm hooked!

I just signed up today. A friend of mine has been into geocaching for a while and thought I would like it.

I used the first letter of myself, my wife, and each our kids for the GC username.

Sort of seems logical considering the mode of transportation we will be using on the treasure hunts!

I just started GeoCaching a few weeks ago. My brother "Zoobernaut" got me started. I'm known as "CarpelDMK." Only got 27 finds so far, no hides yet. I'm enjoying it tho. Found some clever ones. Currently using a Magellan Triton 500 & loving it. My bro has a Magellan 4000xl from back in the day that still rocks. He also has an app on his phone for it. So far I'm sort of radiating outward from home on the finds. I look forward to it now that the weather is getting nicer.

no, but I should. I'm sure someone there would pick it upI've had mine to a few events where no one spotted it. Up your chances by placing your Jeep "in" the event with the rest of the TBs. If you are sure you are going to attend do it a week before hand to give people a chance to see it on the list. BTW if that picture had just a little better resolution I'd grab the FTD! LOL

Just wondering who it does geocaching on this site.... Post your geocaching name... and tell us about how you got started geocaching!

Curse you, Matt! I haven't been Geocaching for several years now, but you got me going again. re-activated an old e-mail account that I used and it had 367 e-mails in it! Oh, well, it's not your fault I was negligent.

If you become a premium member you can run a "pocket query" and select the 4x4 icon http://www.geocaching.com/images/attributes/jeeps-yes.gif in your search parameters. I've been keeping a "bookmarked list" of my favorite Jeep caches (http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.aspx?guid=c5b2c071-6304-4dfd-97e1-d3841fef7234). I hope it will help other cachers looking for some off road fun while caching.

Have fun!

I just registered today... I think I'm going to like this a lot. My wife and I talked about it a couple years ago but never did much. I think that, with the 2 near-by caches, we'll start getting into it pretty quickly. I already found the spot to hide my first cache too! :)

JK-Forum, Geocaching, Beachbody, SIRA and that other Rubicon site.

I got introduced to Geocaching by Spoyd a coworker and friend. He started 30 days before me and he's quickly approaching 2000 finds. Me I'm around 175 finds.

What I love about geocaching is the search, the journey, and at times the scenery. I tend to use Geocaching and Panaramio to find great vista points or interesting adventures when on vacation or traveling.

Read the cache description before going and pick the ones in parks where you can play with the kids also. Some are even "stroller" friendly.

hi guys. im the fyre half of forestfyre07. together my hubby and i have been caching since june of 2007 after his cousin tried sevearl times to get us into it at various family events. since then we have celebrated our 1000th cache together, then suprassed him with over 2400 finds today. we absolutey love the sport and all the awesome places it takes us to.

up until the past week we were caching with our 2005 pontiac vibe. we took that baby offroading into some places even our jeep friends looked questionly at us about  our caching community here is now made up of 75% jeep owners, and we proudly joined the club last week. no more vibe jeeping for us lol. looking forward to several road trips in this puppy, and several more accessible caches now that we have a proper 4x4 lol. :ya:

Been a cacher since 2006.

Read a news story about a cache someone reported as a possible bomb, so the bomb squad blew it up. When they realized what it was, they put the pieces back along with some cop stuff. I thought that was hilarious, and had a GPS and an account within a week of reading about it.
