Geocaching Trip Across Central TX

For the holidays my wife and I geocached our way to family events. Cities and Towns visited: San Antonio, Boerne, Comfort, Fredickburg, Mason, Brady, Katemcy, Eden, Mason, Junction, Sevogia, Mountian Home, Ingram, San Angelo, Kerrville, Mernard and many random spots along the road. There was one part of the trip that we were traveling continually offroad for 20 miles or more.

Nice pictures, mak'n me a bit jealous.

You really need a winch if you're going to do it alone or with the wife. Hope you have some other safety gear as well. That looks like great riding territory, but no phones. :(

My wife and i just signed up on geocaching.com (same name). Haven't gone out yet. Thought it would be awesome with the Jeep. I'll pm you with some questions regardng best gps etc.

Are you using a Geo-caching POI database for a Garmin receiver or what?

Awesome, I love geocaching. just got into it a year or so ago, and had to take a hiatus due to surgery, but just got back into it. My daughter is down to visit from NC for the holidays, so before she went back to her mothers we went out and hid our first cache. Just waiting for it to be approved, then it will be listed. We are known as the PodPeople on Geocaching. If your ever in the area, hit me up, we'll do coffee.

To reply to the questions:

I have a Garmin E-trex H, and a Garmin C550. I really don't use the C550 for geocaching, occasionally, I'll send a POI to is from Geocaching.com. I use Geocaching Swiss Army knife a free ware program.. to organize my pocket queries.

The 20 miles of offroad were just some back county roads that aren't paved and are just trails at times. Really not that of an intense offroading stretch but just a stretch. I did about 6 miles of trail out a the lake near San Angelo, TX. That is a little more intense i some areas.

Your thread title caught my attention. Greetings from a Northern VA cacher! I just signed up and got started last month. No hides for me yet, but I figure I'll place my first one at 100 finds. If I ever make it down your way, I'll be sure to look you up.

And FWIW, I use a Magellan eXplorist 400 that I picked up off an auction site for $130 shipped. It has a recargeable battery plus you can connect it to your computer and download cache info via USB cable.

I never knew what Geocaching was, just heard of it. I'm reading through the website and I think I need to get on board with it! I have the GPS already :cool:
