havn't gotten around to doing a change yet, as the wifes JK unlimited only has around 9K. This summer I'll change it out and most likely use Amsoil.

We have a 05- 2500 DMax Chev.pulling a 32' 5th. Wheel--I went with Amsoil 34Kmiles ago. NO problems...I will go with Amsoil in the Unlimited Rubicon all the way round.
Have a great and safe day.

I used Royal Purple in my TJ and was very happy with it. I wouldn't expect miracles but it did make everything smoother and i think it helped my gas mileage slightly. I used it in my difs, tranny, and transfercase. It did not fix the synchro grind that people on the boards were swearing it did. I plan on switching the new Rubi's out at the first service interval.

I went with Mobile1 because that was what's available here. I've heard good things about Royal Purple, but the ex-Napa here stopped carrying it when they quit being Napa.
I changed it myself at 12k when the dealer wanted to charge $$$ for doing it. I'll probably stick with the Mobile1 unless I find something to sway me away.

I use standard gear oil. I change it twice per year, and more often if it sits in deep water much. I also think it is important to spend some time under the Jeep periodically. Oil is cheap, and changing it as frequently as I do, I think synthetic would be a waste.
If I mostly wheeled in desert / rocks, I would probably use synthetic and change it once per year.

i changed out at 20oookms didn't like the colour so i did a flush with conventional gear oil ran that for a week drained it and poured in the royal purple.
65$ sure beats what dealer was going to charge.

Mobil 1, no question
read this. http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g2457.pdf
Royal Purple rated 12th out of 14 oils tested, the three dino oils tested rated better than Royal Purple synthetic. Of the oils tested the only two that rated worse than Royal Purple were Mopar Synthetic and Lucas Synthetic.
I went with Mobile1 because that was what's available here. I've heard good things about Royal Purple, but the ex-Napa here stopped carrying it when they quit being Napa.

My 09 Jeep has 112 on it. Not 112k... It has 112 miles. I just changed the rear diff to Royal Purple 75w-90 tonight, about 3 hours ago. Royal Purple Max Gear for differentials ALREADY has the additive in it (SynSlide) for a LSD rear end. So if you have the LSD rear diff, or even a front diff with a LSD, Royal Purple Max Gear is a good choice. I do not know about other brands, but I DO KNOW that there MUST be a LSD additive in the oil if you have a LSD diff, otherwise you will burn up the clutch pack inthe LSD.
x2 If you are doing alot of mud and water crossing, then using synthetic is a waste of money.. If I do any deep water crossing, I check the oil but will change it when I get back home.. Just for a piece of mind.. Now, for my Libby which is my daily driver for work and doesn't get wheeled much.. I use Royal Purple..
I agree regarding the frequent oil changes due to water in the diff.
Here is something I ripped off another website (with permission).
I have been using Royal Purple products for years with no problems and 175K on a 1990 Pathfinder with LSD. No, I do not sell or make anything off this post, just a satisfied customer. Royal Purples gear lube is synthetic and is rated as GL-4and GL5. The clutch or cone type refers to the different types of Limited Slip Differential drive connections. Here is a snip from the site I pasted below: Royal Purple Consumer Automotive Product Line
Max-Gear is recommended for use in truck, motor home / RV, and automotive front or rear differentials, manual transmissions and lower gear units of marine engines that specify use of an API GL-5 or GL-4 fluid.
Max-Gear is an ultra-tough, high performance, GL-5 automotive gear oil designed to provide maximum protection to heavily loaded gears while maximizing power output throughout the drive train. It outperforms other GL-5 gear oils because it combines the highest quality synthetic oils with Royal Purple's proprietary Synslide additive technology.
Max-Gear makes gears run smoother, quieter, cooler and longer without overhauls.
All viscosities of Max-Gear are formulated with hypoid friction modifiers necessary for use in clutch or cone type differentials. No additional additives are necessary.
I hope this helps. Also there is a product called Red Line I have seen posted before but have never tried this product. Good Luck..

I'll use good old dino when I do it here soon. Had talked to a guy at a local shop he he told me his synthetic oil rep recomended just straight 90W. Said the synthetic was overrated.

As an engineer myself on the fringe of Automotive engineering, that PDF was pretty conclusive - Amsoil!
Of course it was written BY Amsoil, so... Still the test practices seem fair and it concludes in a sworn affidavit by the test engineer.

changed my front/rear diffs at 30K. used mobil1 synthetic 75W-90 in the rear and a semi-synthetic local brand for the front. Actually my front was still pretty clean, it probably didn't have to have it, but I did it anyway. I don't get to offroad much so the rear was the one I was more concerned with.

For those with LSD Dana 44.... From reading the Amsoil PDF, it seems that Mobil1 or Amsoil will not require the use of an additive. Only the Mopar Synthetic needs the additive for the limited slip clutches. Do I have that right?
Also, for those with LSD, did you notice any change after you went to a non Mopar oil? I like the idea of not having to use the additive, I just want to make sure the LSD clutch packs will be 'happy'.
One more thing.. .from looking at the Amsoil site.. it says you 'might' need the Amsoil LS additive to prevent chatter.... so has anyone put in Amsoil in a Dana 44 LSD and needed the additive? Vendor response welcome.
Thanks!

Sorry to hijack the thread and bring it back to life. This might be a dumb question but does anyone know if the Mobile 1 synthetic LS is okay to use in a Rubicon with 5.38 gears? I'm not worried about the weight I'm worried about the "LS" on it. Didn't notice it until I got home and can't recall if there was a non LS that would be better. This is a picture of the stuff I got. Maybe somebody thats experianced in this matter can tell me if I'll be okay or if it would be better to take it back and get a different kind. I do tow a 3200 lb trailer from time to time if that matters.

From this product description found on Mobile ones website about this lubricant it seems like it will do the job and it doesn't look like theres a "LS" and non "LS" brand. That was wierding me out for some reason and thought maybe there was a special lubricant or something where I should only use it in a limited slip differential. By all means I'm no mechanic, but I'll play one to save a few fundred dollars from what the dealership wanted to charge me.

I've had good luck over the years with RedLine. I also use it in my Harley and RAM2500.

went with mobil 1 75-140 for the rear and 70-90 up front.
Have had good luck with mobil 1 in the past. at 100,000 miles the inside was like brand new. Very good stuff and it is half the price of some of the other synthetics.
The 75-140 in the rear got rid of a ton of slop in the driveline.
Esspecially when hot. The stuff does not wilt under heat and high speeds.
I would use it in the rear diff even if I did not tow.
Great stuff.

Any well known name brand oil will work great as long as you follow the maintenance schedule, I use Mobil 1 because you can get it just about everywhere but I have used Royal Purple in my Mustang and Lucas in my truck with great results too:yup:
