Thinking about swapping out the 3.8 for a diesel, what would fit and what would be the best bang for my buck?

Personally If I were to swap I'd go with the Hemi but you can check this out.

Not sure if this forum has seen/heard much about Diesel swaps.

easiest swap would prolly be to buy the deisel that goes in the JK in europe, not sure if your dealer could get it and all the parts, but like i said, it would be easiest and would definately fit... however, i doubt it would be your cheapest or best bang for buck either.... realistically, i think i would look for a trashed liberty with the 2.8 diesel and try to put that in there. good luck, i hope you pull it off

Aside from the cost of the swap, right now diesel sells for about 15% over gas. That is also about the same increase in mileage you might see. Out of curiousity, what do you hope to gain except high points on the cool scale?

I would love to see if you find out how and where to get this done. I fell in love with diesel's after I drove my brother's chevy pick up with a duramax. As for why, diesel's are made for torque which is what you want for wheelin, low end POWER.

I hope I don't have to follow you on the trail. They stink. I don't understand the hype. Makes no logical sense with the cost of fuel, maintenance, repairs, etc. Keep it.

I thought I read somewhere that the cummins is the most viable diesel engine choice for the JK....

I have grown to love these threads, the different thought's and opinion's that are thrown out there including my own. If you pay $3.60 a gallon for a diesel (cummins diesel) and get 17-20 mpg or pay $3.20 a gallon for gas (srt-8 gas) 12-15 mpg, what would be the difference? You have to pay for the swap either way. It would basically be a choice of what you would prefer. They would both give you some serious power gains.

IF the Diesel is a cummins inline 6 you would get more serious power gains with just a few add ons like chip, CAI and exhaust and if you really want to get silly add on a twin turbo, stack your powerchip, add propane injection you will see more HP gains than a 6.1L Hemi as well you will get a longer life motor with diesel!

That's what I mean, the aftermarket performance and longevity of a diesel is crazy.

Its simply a case of the grass seems greener. I can tell you after year of Diesels in the UK - chipped, turbo'd... just brings them closer to Gas. The HEMI would be real hard for a diesel to beat once you factor in weight.
Diesels are great as small slow sluggers. But expensive to run and maintain.
Just traded a 900HP - 600ftlb diesel for a Hemi Commander and I can tell you which I'd rather drive. :)
I rather drive my +550HP & 850lb/ft of torque Ram 3500 over my Dodge Magnum R/T AWD HEMI. My CTD walks all over my Magnum leaving it behind in a haze of black smoke!!! But....over the JK and Diesel tight race....JK for the fun factor with top down!!!

dude, if you had 900hp, you'd have closer to 1600ftlbs. ether you phat fingered your torque num. or you're confused.
I had a 500hp and close to 1000ftlb 01 dodge and that truck ripped serious a$$. Made that 7500lb truck feel like it was half the wieght.

The cummins would be a horrible choice from a fitment perspective. The length of the engine and sheer wieght would burry the poor JK. Serious tale wagging the dog. I would think the duramax would be a far better/doable swap. Also for all the neh-sayers.. the torque provided by the stock duramax would be so amazing, you'd proably leave the stock gearing in tacked with 37" + tires. I bet a Rubicon with 4.10's and 37's would get 20-28mpg with a duramax. Figure the older Duramax trucks could pull off 20mpg and wiegh close to 2000lbs more at least. These newer diesels are real quiet in stock form and as far as smelling goes, if you leave it stock, they burn so cleanly, they hardly smoke or smell. My Cummins 6.7 doesn't smoke at all with EGR (it's stock).
I would love a diesel in my JK. Nothing to do with gas prices, I'd rather have 300 ft lbs of torque than 200 any day of the week :P
Plus, Diesel is about the same price as Gas around here...
Every time I'm in a Diesel pickup, I wonder why in the world people still buy gas trucks...

we can buy diesel as a option here is Aus it's a 2.8L 4cylinder turbo similar to that offered in KJ

I wonder if the 3.0 from the diesel cherokee would fit? If it bolted up to the stock transmission thats half the battle right there.

300 ft lbs would be a 4 cyc tdi like in a Jetta. Duramax is 600+ ft lbs and 360hp. Everybody talks about all the tuning you can do to the truck diesel engines but you wouldn't need to do anything with that kind of power. Much more and it'd probably be dangerous.

I wonder when the 4.5L Duramax is supposed to be out?
That would be perfect.

We have a old 2wd john deere tractor 4 cylinder. id love to drop that engine into my 2005 TJ! but that would require extream mods and i dont have the know now!:naw: i wonder how long it would take and how much it would be for a "real" mecanic to do the swap for me....

It wouldn't the Cummins 5.9L 6cyl it would be the Cummins 4BT 3.9L 4cyl.
There is a guy up here in Ontario Canada who did that swap into his TJ and he loves it. I almost bought it...gets 17-20mpg no matter how hard he rips on it....never stalls haha..

I think it was SLC that said they had one, and planned to install it but it was too wide. I could be wrong. I think the 4bt would be the best exchange. It only need one wire to run. Too bad the JK has to have all the computer stuff.

That's what it comes down to. The JK would be great with a duramax or cummins diesel, but if you like your ABS, ESP, gauges, and other fancy computer stuff to work properly, it wouldn't work.
And, for me in California at least, you need an engine of the same manufacturer and current or later year in order to pass smog, licensing, etc. I don't know if that applies to Chryler and Dodge vehicles, but I don't think that there's a diesel in the Jeep lineup that would be worth the conversion.

At this rate probably never considering they can't give away a pickup or SUV. Plus, considering the horrific new 08+ EPA emission requirements I bet it would be at least a $6K option by itself.
They've been promising that motor for several years......

If I were to do this find a wreck Grand Cherokee with the CRD and do a complete swap. But if I could do what I wanted it would be the Cummins 4-BT Its all about MONEY:eek2:
