Please Read This First- I resume no responsibility if you follow what I did. If your car blows up, catches on fire, radio stops working- ANYTHING That goes wrong with YOUR JEEP - Its on YOU!!! Not to be mean, but trying to share what I did.

Ok Now that that's out of the way have a look!!

Things I bought

1- Any Monitor of your choice 12v
1- Radio Shack Power outlet- $12
1 6ft Video RCA- Yellow
Double sided foam tape
Velcro
Zip Ties
Butt connectors
Wire Taps

I used my spare Sirius S50 mount to mount monitor

Tools I used:
philips scew driver
wire stripper
wire crimper
utlilty knife
soldiering iron
pry tool
7mm socket and wratchet
scissors

For this write up the Pics I had were for dismantling the monitor to make it smaller but replaced it w a 7 inch monitor from ebay for $80

This part is the important part for wiring it up

Next I took my pry tool and put to on the rear of the radio top housing
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l67/dbb888/DSC06697.jpg

And pried off the bottom cover from the top corners
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l67/dbb888/DSC06700.jpg

Next I removed the 4 7mm screws and pulled gently from each side- 2 on top 2 in middle and 2 on the bottom
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l67/dbb888/DSC06701.jpg

Here I took 2 wires to connect to the video wires. I did this for 2 reasons.
1. I had no female plug to use
2. I can use the wire itself as a plug and its shielded

http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l67/dbb888/DSC06703.jpg

This is important!!
Video is pin 6
Shield ground is pin7
In the picture I have it on 5 for video and 6 for shield. I used the spec sheet from Nitro and saw it wasn’t right and found another site that had the right info

REMEMBER
PIN-6 Center RCA WIRE
PIN-7 OUTER SHIELD

http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l67/dbb888/DSC06705.jpg

Next I put a screw in the corner hole and zip tied the wire to it so it wouldn’t move.
This way I made sure no matter how the radio was to move, the wire would stay rigid into the radio
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l67/dbb888/DSC06706.jpg

This the RCA Wire I stripped and the thin center wire is Video (PIN 6) and the thick outer wire is the shield (PIN 7)
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l67/dbb888/DSC06707.jpg

I then soldiered the wires and electric taped them- Black wire was for the ground shield (Pin7)

I then popped out the side panel to run the wires
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l67/dbb888/DSC06710.jpg

Next I took the house power plug and cut the outlet plug off. I needed the extra length for the cigarette plug. I used the -house plug wire- into the top housing and ran it across the right side windshield along with the video wire.

The house wire reached to the side panel and from there, I cut the plug end of the cigarette power wire. I then butt connected the wires together.

I remembered to look at the marks on the wire- there are white stripes on one side of the wires and solid on the other- match them

http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l67/dbb888/DSC06711.jpg

Next I removed the glove box- I opened it up and pressed the sides in and it came right out.

I used the wire taps on the left side cigarette outlet because this one only turns on when the key is turned. If I used the one on the right then it would be constantly on.
The blue wire is (+) ignition on and black (-) ground.

http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l67/dbb888/DSC06713.jpg

Next I took the radio shack power outlet and cut off the alligator clips. I marked the negative side first with a strip of electrical tape on it. THIS WAS IMPORTANT SO I WOULDN’T SHORT OUT THE MONITOR!!!!!
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l67/dbb888/DSC06714.jpg
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l67/dbb888/DSC06715.jpg

Then I put it all back together and started to watch DVD’s -MI III was on.

I was still able to use all the features of the housing base- like brightness- color- power

That was nice! :2thumbs: I love when there is pics to go along with a write up.

How did you connect the video & shield wires to pin 6 & 7...what I mean is how did ya secure the connection to the pins?

maybe it's obvious but not for me.

DBB888
02-27-2007, 06:08 PM
It wasn't that bad- took me an hour to do all the disassembly and 1/2 hour to make the cover.
Then 2 hours for the install in the jeep. I've was an audio installer from 1993 to 2000 and read alot of people who wanted to do a monitor.
I also read that some people bought the target monitor and didnt know where to put it. So I said why not. It'll keep ky wife and future kids busy

I was going to put it on top of the radio, but then there was going to be to much clutter on the dash. I already have my Tomtom on there.

If you look at the Black and Yellow Wires, I used a pick and pushed the pick in the center of each wire. Then I just pushed the wires directly into the pins.

The other end of the wires, I soldiers the RCA center wire to the Yellow wire and the shield wire to the black wire. Then electric taped them to keep them covered and then tucked them behind the radio dash.

As far as securing it- I used the zip tie to screw on the back of the radio. There are pics- look for the pics of the back of the radio.

I was so into the install that I forgot to take that picture- Sorry.- I'll make a sample and take a pic tonite and display it on this thread.

I'm not sure what a "pick" is.

Yeah I was just wondering about the connection to the pins, I saw the screw & zip tie.
Thanks for the info.

I know this is a crazy question but does it work while your driving or only when its in park?

DBB888
02-27-2007, 07:14 PM
A "Pick" is a like a mini screw driver with just a sharp point end.

The video works while driving because it was designed for dual headrest viewing.

It is DANGEROUS to have on while Driving- So DONT do it- If you dont do it neither will I !!

Or is it If I don't do it neither should you?

Hi DBB888,

I live in So Calif, Seal Beach.
How much will you charge to install that unit in my 07 Rubicon?
I guess I would have to fly you here if you don't live in So Calif?

Thanks

Great write up,
if I understand this correctly, you have the factory 6-Disc head unit? You mention Sirius but is that just a mount you had? So this will work if you have the 6-Disc CD/DVD?

DBB888
02-28-2007, 10:32 AM
Hi Guys
Yeah I'm in NJ- wouldn't know what to charge-

Yes Its the factory head unit with dvd and sirius and 6 disc. If it says DVD on the bottom left corner your good to go. The mount was from a kit I bought for my other car.

Mike

mikesjeep

I guess I'll have to drive my Rubicon to Jersey to have you install the unit?

Another question: are you able to play the DVD and also listen to the radio at the same time.

In other words, can the rear passengers watch the DVD with head phone and the driver listen to sirius or radio?

Thanks

If you make the trip- I'll do it for free

The head unit can only do one at a time- Just DVD or Just radio- you can load 6 DVD's !!

Hi Mike,
I actually heve the mygig on order, course it hasn't come in yet.

According to other threads and info, the mygig has a video out to a video screen which you can play both the radio and the DVD at the same time.

I guess I'll find out when it comes in.

My second choice would be to go with the mygig or 6 CD player and buy a seperate DVD player/monitor for the rear passengers.

Thanks again

Hey I'm in Jersey!
I'm still trying to figure out what audio configuration I would want when I get a JK. I've got plenty of time though, but it's fun to think about.

DBB888... you were an audio installer, right? How is the stock setup?

Not sure if I should bother with the factory stereo (CD, 6 disc DVD or MyGig) or go aftermarket.
I know that I want to add a small sub & probably a 4ch amp for the speakers.
I'm not sure if it's going to make a big difference with having rca pre amp outputs off of an aftermarket stereo or using the factory stereo and using speaker level inputs on the amp(s) or a line output converter.

What do you think...pre amp outputs, speaker level inputs or line output converter?

Rockford Fosgate has a device out that basically seems like an enhanced line output converter that has an eqalization curve, which might work well for the factory equalization settings that supposedly fade the rear soundbar speakers out.
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-yJR7jLDrQtZ/cgi-bin/Prodview.asp?readmore=true&g=304550&I=5753SIXTY1#Tab

Is there a way to adjust the factory equalizer settings?
Did you upgrade the factory speakers or do you plan to?

Thanks for any info

> How is the stock setup?

I learned to like it so far-

>What do you think...pre amp outputs, speaker level inputs or line output converter?

If I was to go aftermarket, there is no question that I would use Pre Amp outputs. Amps are the way to go. A 4 channel and sub amp and your rock-in or Booming.
Only if your really set on a factory look would I use the rest.

For now Im content with having a set up that is already paid for and getting the most out of it. Talk to me in a few months when summers around and see if I put a lot ofmy left over audio stuff in though. I have Sirius for free for one year though. Maybe after that I’ll change it.

>Rockford Fosgate has a device out that basically seems like an enhanced line output converter that has >an eqalization curve, which might work well for the factory equalization settings that supposedly fade the >rear soundbar speakers out.

Hmm- never heard of anyone trying this- It’s a thought though. I’m going to keep this in mind.

>Is there a way to adjust the factory equalizer settings?
Nope

>Did you upgrade the factory speakers or do you plan to?
Plan to – Definitely

I’m in Edison NJ so if your close and then next time I do a project, I’ll let you know.

I put and airhorn in today because I can’t stand the factory one. Only downside is, I lose the factory arm honk because the airhorn needs a second to pulse the relay and by that time its to late

I'm glad to know that the sirius head unit will show video. Strange that mopar isn't really bumping up efforts to sell monitor kits... if the unit is video capable. Maybe the aftermarket will provide. Thanks for the well documanted thread.

You could mount it right on top of the radio. I was even to the point where I was going to modified the lid with a hinge in the back and remove the inner front lip so I can just lift the lip and the monitor would be right there. but when I had the top lifted and resting up against the windshield it was taking up to much of my front view.

Even if I just mounted the monitor itself with a hinge or just mounted it facing front all the time, it was to taking to much space in my frontal view.

plus then I would have to extend all the wires that make the monitor work and relocate the base control unit somewhere.

so is there another DCX car that has a harness that can be plugged in with pigtaisl on the end? I would assume a minivan or durango would ahve DVD options.

I wonder if any aftermarket companies will be making a harness that converts it to RCA's?

not sure if you can just buy the plugs- I doubt it bc its part of the main wiring harness $1500

but im sure junk yards out there that have wrecked 06 and up jeep/dodge/chrysler cars who have the radios pulled up leave the wires behind- just cut them out.

Im going to so that once my local junk yard has one in

Try to make U-Connect work

With it being cold and all the Velcro on top didnt stay, so I took small 1/4 inch self tap screws and screw'd through the velcro on top so I know that it wont give way.

I love having it- bc when my wife wants to do the "I'll be in and out" of a shoe store or supermarket I know I have 1/2 hour to kill and watch a movie.

I found my monitor online for $85 its Pyle, 7” widescreen, part # PLVS7HM. It’s has 2 video in-puts, a remote (like it’s needed), all wires, and 4 mounting options. This saved me the lots of time. Total install less then 1.5 hours from opening the doors to putting away the tools.

DBB888, Why did you take apart the monitor rather than just leaving it all one piece. And why did you cut the ground wire when you did take it apart. Just a couple dumb questions because I want to do the same intstall but with 2 monitors attatched to the head rests.

The whole Monitor set up was to big to fit up front above the rear view.

I reconnected the ground wire when I put the bottom half back together.

If you want to make it a flip down, then you should actually buy a flip down. Its alot easier.

The one from target would be a good headrest monitor by itself with no modifications.

hey dbbb888 would you by any chance know how to disengage the safty feature on the mygig. I have it and love it but when you put it in drive the screen cuts off like it is suppose to for "SAFTEY" reasons. I would love to bypass that so the kids can watch TV on trips and I can watch when she goes "right in the store and back". We are looking at the 7" monitors that strap to the head rest for trips but would love not spending the $179 for them. Any help from anybody would greatly be welcomed. Just an ol broke fireman trying to fix up the JK. Thanks

Hey Jim does the wind bother that monitor with the top off?

Mygig driveing feature can be dissabled two ways. Dealer to program the CAN Bus, or cut the Bus lines and give it power all time. There is a write up on it somewhere but lost it. But if you cut the lines it will mess up the route guide somehow. I am unsure on that one. If i find the link i will post them.

While getting things ready to run a wire for an LCD monitor I made a discovery. . .

I found an old "HDD LED cable" (you know the ones that go from the front of computer cases to the motherboard) that fits the pins on the radio perfect.

I'm not sure if this was from a old AT or ATX case, but if you've got some old junk cases around then I'd take a look at the plugs as one worked perfect for me.

A quick search turned up this picture for those that don't know what I'm talking about.

I dont know about your state laws but most here on the east coast are NO monitors of anykind in the front seat areas. In otherwords if it can be seen from the drivers seat it must come out, not just turned off. So if you have this be careful using it if johny law sees it,,

It is running of the stock radio...if you want to listen to what the kids in the back are watching, and if you have the DVD capable factory head unit. But if you want to listen to music while the kids are watching your out of luck. for that reason I just plug in the portable to that monitor and put the portable in the center console. I do have a soft top but with the tinted windows you can't see in very easily. The mounting bracket is custom I should have took pics and posted how I did it. The bracket came in the form of a universal plastic license plate bracket (single strip) that I picked up from pep boys for $3.99. I cut out the long center piece so I ended up with 2 kinda t shaped pieces. I then took the back off the dvd monitor and measured where the supplied screws for the license bracket would go without interfering with the tilt feature ot the monitor or the electronics inside. Then screwed the pieces into the backplate of the monitor on either side. Then I put the monitor back together made sure it still pivoted and used the 2 other supplied screws to mount the montor. Not the most perfect looking because of the silver screws I will probably replace them with blackones. But because the sound bar is so far back any other type of mount in that position would give your kids a crook in the neck from straining to see the monitor. This was as close to flush mount as I could get. I hope that helps.

See so many questions and then you get even longer answers:crazyeyes:

I want to thank the thread starter and everyone else for pulling all this information together.

My two biggest concerns were
1. Being caught with a screen in view of driver (ticketable) and leaving a monitor for little thieves to snatch (when I'm away from the vehicle).
With these 2 concerns I set out to find a better place for the monitor and have it set up so it can be quickly removed.

Well here you go:
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d55/vbgsx/DSCF0285.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d55/vbgsx/DSCF0281.jpg

As you'll notice, I still have full use of the AC and access to the power windows.
The monitor can be tilted forward, backward and can be turned to the right or left for better viewing.
The brace is easily removed by spinning 2 wing nuts. Once removed you'll never know anything was altered.

Parts used:
1. 7" Pyle LCD monitor $84.99
2. 2 Wing nuts $2.00 aprox.
3. Bag of #10 bolts $2.00 aprox
4. #10 tap and die set $10.00
5. Free metal scraps and electrical connectors in my garage

Total: Aprox $98.00

I also used hip2u77's idea using what he called a "HDD LED cable". I searched everywhere for the plug when it hit me. I found an old rechargable battery from an old cordless phone. The plug the battery uses was perfect! I can post pic.s if someone wants to see it.

The pic.s aren't very good but let me tell you, in person this is just amazing
Thanks again

That's what I'm planning on doing also (with the camera). I really wish I could put it up there. That's definitely my favorite mounting spot. But the camera wouldn't be able to save me if I have a movie on at night and the screen was up there...lol but with the monitor low like this, I'm safe :)
Thanks again. Great write up

So I have my setup running, I'll take some pics in a bit, but I have a question for all of you who have set this up already. I threw in a DVD and sure enough it's appearing on the screen. But when it gets to the main menu, how the heck do you select any of the options? I see that hitting the forward/reverse options moves the menu icon, but I can't figure out how to SELECT play movie.

just leave it in and it will play.. or push the knob on the right and turn the knob.. gives you options

Interesting. Maybe it's the DVD I choose. Finding Nemo... it just sits at the menu screen while the stupid fish keep daring me to push play. I pushed in the knob and went to the option for autoplay and I get "feature disabled".

If you hit the setup button while playing a DVD on the 6 disc changer, it gives you a list of options. The first one is enter... that is what you use to hit enter for the menus in your movies. Your Seek |<< & >>| and your RW << & FF >> buttons make the cursor go up, down, left, and right. There are other things under setup including pause. I hope this helps!

All mine will do is play or pause, I can't skip chapters or anything. Seek and RW/FF always takes me back to the time screen and out of the setup/menu screen. Hmmm... maybe it's just the DVD...

GOOD LORD!!! 1,000 bucks for that?!?!?! :naw: I just don't understand the outrageous prices folks put on things for the J/K! I paid 730 bucks for my Navigation and Video system and you can see that screen in direct sunlight.

You can see fine out the rear, as it hangs down no lower than the wiper does on the back glass. The screen is huge and is quite clear - and my daughters love it so phooey to all you nay sayers!:ya: LOL

I saw this installed in quadratec's JK last night.... It looks good. And, as far as the price is concerned, I don't think it is that bad. My wife had an Enjoy Denali that we had a DVD installed in. It was the same exact player, and the whole thing, out the door was $1200. So, I don't think this is a bad price.

If you want cheap, just buy the cheapies that bungie to the back of the seats and call it a day. If you want built in, this is the price you pay.....

Got my monitor today! It's a 6.5" Sony XVM-F65WL --- has two wireless headphone ability (came with one set), two video in, one out, and 2.4ghz wireless video (so I can go with a wireless backup camera, etc). Only $100 on ebay - brand new!

Need to figure out if I want to go with a dash mount or up above.

Test run:

or could fit nicely mounted above the rear view:

picture quality is great:

Is there a good reference for taking apart the dash for the exact clip/mounting points? I'd hate to crack the dash or break any fasteners. Also, where is a good place to find mounts/brackets for monitors, CBs, etc?

Here was my quick and easy solution for a filp down video monitor mount in the front of my JK Unlimited. After reading this original thread and seeing the different monitors and mounting solutions folks came up with, I ordered a 'self contained' inexpensive Pyle 7" right side sun visor TFT monitor for $100 shipped. At first I removed and tried replacing the factory sunvisor, but it was not working out too well, so I used black zip ties to temporarly mount the monitor sunvisor above the passenger side visor offset towards the center. I'm not rushing to drill holes in the windsheild channel just yet!:eek2: I do like the location because it flips well up and out of the way and flips down easily for viewing, even the rear passengers can view the screen. So far it works very good, the screen picture is decent (not as good as the sony 6.5" but better than my flash photos) and the factory 6 disc dvd system works well. It plays while drivng, though it's not recommended or legal to do so. So far we are using it to watch Napoleon Dynamite at the bus stop! Thanks for all the info on this thread! Now for the backup cam...

Ciao! Ted

even though my Sahara has the mygig, i will probably mount a monitor in the same place so the wife and kid can watch a movie and i can concentrate on the navigation. thanks for the write up. I used to install car stereos also...got tired of all of the jacka... that fiddled with levels and blew their stuff up and expected it to be covered under warranty. Anyway could the original poster please re-post the pictures? Half of his write up is missing. I need to see how to splice up all the wires.

Okay... I'll give it a go... I guess the main part still has the pics...

I bought an Alpine M710 6.5 LCD for $150, it comes with a box to plug the RCA into, so all I need to do is splice up the RCS like you did and get it put on the back of the headunit in the correct place.

I wish I still had all those extra computer cables. Oh well.

I was able to get power to the unit, but it has a safety feature that won't allow it to play. I need to figure out if I need to ground the parking wire. All I would need is the power to the unit, but I'm not sure if the wire harness will let me yank all the other wires and still work.

My plan is to splice up some good long wires so I can strap the video to the back roll bar so we can watch while camped out in the back in my JK bed.

I'll see what I come up with... I might post more questions.

Great idea, I want to do the same thing. Could you repost these photos that are missing? Thanks!

DBB888 - thanks for this great info! Do any of these monitors or setups allow you to plug a computer into the monitor? Specifically, I want to do this with a touchscreen monitor, so I can run TOPO USA gps software. But playing movies through the soundsystem and the dash dvd unit would be great too!
Thanks

The images I took off are not important- Because they show me destroying a monitor to make it fit- I replaced it with a new monitor you can buy cheap on ebay. The pics that are on the write up are the important ones.

Thanks for the offer though

Cool, I'll be doing this soon, but with the mygig non-nav unit, but a friend of mine wanted the writeup for a 6 disc dvd (if he buys my old one).

PIN-6 Center RCA WIRE
PIN-7 OUTER SHIELD

http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l67/dbb888/DSC06705.jpg

I tried this the other day, and I get no video signal. It says that 6 is the pole (pos) and 7 is the shield (neg), but after looking at the picture again it appears the wires are on pins 5 and 6.

Can someone confirm that 6 and 7 are the correct pins so I don't have to open it up again and I can start blaming my monitor?

Thanks, Jack

BTW - I used one of those connectors off a PC power supply that goes to the MB - it fits perfectly.
