I know a guy who has one and has used it for fishing in places ranging from mountians to the ocean and loves it. He said it's nice to have when packing small and can't take a hard side boat with him. Given the choice however he would prefer a hard side Kayak but there are times it is not feasable to haul one. I also know places in the mountians that "rent" them out for trips down the river just like tubes. They seem to hold up well.

I would love to have a 2 seater, so that I can haul it long distances. My jeep doesn't have a rack, so to haul my canoe or kayaks I have to have my top off.

My uncle has one. He has had it for about 25 years years and swears by it for afternoon paddling in the bay, getting tossed around the rapids, or riding in waves on the ocean. It is extremely durable and packs away easily. I was with him once when it popped a hole on a big shard of glass. He taped it up with some duct tape and reinflated the chamber. We paddled on for another two hours or so without a problem. The next day, he patched it with some extra material and rubber cement and it has been fine since. The down side is that it is not very efficient in the water - a lot of drag.

I have a Sevylor Eskimo as a plaything. I have real kayaks, but the inflatable is just for playing in the surf. No more. They are slow and short for the most part with wide beams so they are much good for paddling a distance. For hauling around in the JK. I have a Folbot folder that is much better than an inflatable yet more expensive. Nothing matches my real fiberglass and kevlar kayak, but the folder goes in two bags and fits easily in the back

A lady friend of mine has one, I went out in it with her once. The're pretty cool.
The're great because of their packability, if you don't do a lot of boating.
And if you just want to use it now and again.

The one she had (I don't know the brand) seemed like the material it was made out of was quite durable for something that inflates. I was impressed.
Once we got enough air in it (we blew it up quite tightly) it held it's shape rather well...didn't fold in half or anything like that. And it held us both quite comfortably.

I have to agree about the drag it has when on the water.
That and the time spent blowing it up are really the only drawbacks.
Other than that it's a pretty cool unit.

Had a great trip on a "FunYak" inflatable kayak down the Dart River in NZ a few summers ago. Wouldn't like to have to paddle it across a lake, though. OTOH a couple of truck inner tubes would have been just as much fun.

i tried an inflatable and hated it... the problem was that if its windy the thing acts as a sail and you'll have a hell of a time paddling against it. after trying that i got a tandem sit on top www.emotionkayaks.com/HTML/Kayaks/CoMotion.htm for round $500 with paddles and seats... and i love the thing, especially for fishing. i've installed a dry hatch, fish finder, and 2 rod holders on it... its great for paddleing down the Delaware river or chillin on a lake hunting pike with the fly rod.

haulin it isnt a pain either... just toss it up on top the jeep and ratchet strap that bugger down.

so i'd save up the lil bit of extra cash and get a hard yak... will last ya a good many years and has a nice resale value:thumbsup:

I've got a 2 person inflatable kayak from Innova thats been awsome. It has an aluminum keel that keeps it tracking straight and the wind hasn't been a problem. I even have a sail for it and a trolling motor.
We've had it for about 8 years now and it's holding up great. Sunny is the model I believe.

Not the most stable or durable boats, but good for fun.

Best to stay on lakes/calm shoreline.

Have you thought about folding kayaks, like FOLBOAT.
They are a metal frame with a vinyl or canvas skin stretched around it.
I think another brand makes one you can adjust the rocker in it, to make it track better or be more agile.
They may cost more than inflatables but I don't think you would get bored with it.
I like my hard kayaks, they are a pain in the but to haul on the roof.
But I am going to make a trailer to haul them.

If you think kayaks are bad to haul onto the roof, try a 1960 wood/canvas canoe (16ft).

Dang! Almost killed myself last year!

I believe we have a pair of the Coleman 1-person kayaks. (My GFs parents gave them to us.)

We tried them once, and they were fine. They don't track real well, but they float, and you can paddle around. They work, but they really aren't even comparable to a real kayak.

Did you take it to Lake Cowichan any? I'd love to float down the river someday. I have a friend that lives by sahtlam's.

THEY ARE FUN for short floats in good conditions. they don't let ya do a roll so if ya turn over yer getting out and turning over by hand. I have a Sevylor and they call it a kayak but it's really just an inflatable canoe. I think I'd get a real kayak if I had it to do all over again.
