View Full Version : Stock Headlights?

Does anyone know or can they check their owner's manual to find out what type of headlight bulbs are in the new JK?? Is it a replacable H4? H7??
I tend to convert most of my vehicles (including my Honda Valkyrie) to HID headlight(s) because up here in the mountains, deer are aplenty, and every lumen counts to give you more time to react.
I've already decided on Hella Rallye 4000 Compact Xenon lights as extra insurance and will mount them on top of the stock bumper until Expedition One gets that bumper out! I plan to wire them into the high-beam circuit as well as a separate switch on the dash.

Still a lot, but the light they put out, the long bulb life immune to off-road jarring, and the tiny amp draw once lit makes them worth it in the long run.

Forgive my ignorance, but what features make you buy the $450 Xenon light over the same thing for 1/4 the price. Please educate me.

By "same thing", do you mean Halogen lights? The ones with a glowing hot filament that can burn out? That breaks more easliy when jarred frequently from continuous off-roading? Xenon bulbs have no filament to burn up. They produce light from an arc of electricity shot between two poles. The light they produce is a much brighter more whiter light. They use about 1/3rd of the amps of an equivalent-watt-rated Halogen bulb. I have two burned out 130w KC fog light bulbs on my XJ as I type. They cost $35 apiece to replace and I've already replaced 2 bulbs in the past four years. They always seem to burn out when I need them most. Four bulbs equals $140 thus far.
No more for me. I'm willing to spend more to get lights that are going to be reliable, draw less power, produce more light, and last WAY longer. Finally, with less amp draw, that will produce less drag (though minescule) on the alternator, freeing more HP for the trail.
Other than the cost, what's not to like?

They're H13 . . . . bi HID hits (hi and low beams) can be had on ebay for around 200 dollars.
i ran the sylvania HID conversion on my TJ. they sucked. just fyi and my .02
i will be converting my JK to HID though. Just not a kit like that last one.

To answer your original question---JK factory bulbs are 9008's.
I wish they had a factory HID option. Cibie does make European code lights for this size.

OK, one says 9008 bulbs, another says H13 bulbs. A little research discovers these are one and the same bulb. I'm still looking for a quality Bi-Xenon kit to retain both high/low beam functions. I cannot access eBay right now from work, but will check when I get home.

XSighting Lighting Xe7R Twin Pack
Same great kit as the Xe7R but in a twin pack. The Xe7R Xenon Bi-Function HID headlamp is an excellent performance upgrade for vehicles originally equipped with 7” round incandescent or halogen headlamps. The Xe7R utilizes a clear lens and has a traditional appearance and the added performance of Xenon / HID in both low and high beam. The Xe7R Headlamp Kit comes with everything you need to add performance and style to your vehicle. In some vehicles, modification to the light “bucket” may be required to accommodate the Xe7R housing.

WOW, those look pretty darn good, but pretty pricey as well. I'll have to wait to see how much room is behind the headlights to see how trimming of the bucket will be needed.
There's got to be a cheaper way...

Just ordered Cibie European code replacement lights. I don't even know if they will fit. If they do, I will post the entire project with photos. The lights were $62 plus the higher wattage bulbs.

I have the Silverstars in mine, and as usual, they are a huge improvement over stock. in fact, the fog ones are almost too bright. I need to aim them up a hair.

I've been thinking of going that route, but my Silverstar retailer has no information or part number for the JK. What did you replace - the bulbs or the lights, and do you have their part numbers handy? Thanks.

According to Quadratec:
What is the part number for the headlight?
SilverStar Halogen JK Headlamp Upgrade: http://www.quadratec.com/products/97000_107.htm
(or as was posted earlier in this thread, they are H13 or 9008 <---same thing)
What is the part number for the fog light?
SilverStar Fog Lamp Upgrade: http://www.quadratec.com/products/97000_108.htm
I believe those prices shown are PER BULB though. So make sure you ask if you decide on those.

For those that upgraded their fog lights, did you REALLY notice much of a difference in brightness? Did you install ONE, then turn them on at night to compare stock to Silverstar?
Thanks in advance.

I'm confused. Someone says xenon bulbs don't use a filament, but the description for Hella bulbs at rallylights.com says Xenon bulbs use Xenon gas to allow use of a hotter filament. Are we talking apples and oranges?
BTW: Are any of these bulbs the blue ones I sometimes see on kiddie kars? I hate those. That isn't whiter light, that's bluer light. It might be a higher color temperature, but that doesn't make it 6500K white light.
