Only disappointed in the fact that when I heard this on the radio, the DJs sighed and scoffed about it. They were saying how dumb of an idea that was and that the students would be "flashing their guns around" and such. How ridiculous our media can be.

What's this? I haven't heard about this yet. i was told on monday that my chl would take almost three months to get after I turned in the paperwork. What the heck is dps doing with there time? I know the officers are busy but what about the staff? I thought the law was within 60 days. someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'm for the Texas open carry law.

it was right around 60 days for me back in Oct 2007. i think the applications have gone way up from what i've heard. people on texaschlforum are waiting quite awhile.

"American Rifleman" had a whole section dedicated to the CHL wait times last month. Basically IIRC the wait times are out of control due to skyrocketing demand and some piece of equipment they use to fab the license broke down for a while. I'm ok with open carry as long as we retain our conceal carry privledges. Between the two I'll take concealed any day.

:what?:
I am an avid shooter/gun lover/2nd amendment wacko. But, I am not sure this is such a good idea. Please tell me that these folks are required to get some training before they are allowed to carry? There is nothing more dangerous than an untrained person with a gun.

from what I've heard and read, students who carry will have to go through the same classes and training and will most likely have to be on file with the campus police. They might have to keep the firearm in there backpack (that defeats the purpose and opens the individual to thieft, as there are a bunch of jerks out there). That's what I've heard. I hope this passes. I'm tired of hearing of students and people in general not being able to defend themselves. People in the media will find/use any scare tactics to get people scared of anything. That's just sad, what ever happened to the news being objective?

i hope it passes as well. however, i do think....at least in texas....that requirements need to be much more strict. it's ridiculously easy and i'm a little embarassed at how relaxed the requirements are for a concealed handgun license is to obtain in TX. i wish they would make it into a longer program...maybe a few months of instruction, training, etc. an 8 hour class and 1 hour of shooting is just not enough.

I went through a 4 hour class, and ONE shot at the range (15' and had to hit the target paper). :eek2:

It is strict out there! :rotflmao2:

That's what happens in those dang liberal states, make you take a class, and pass a test, just for the privilege of having the state recognize your god given rights.:bleh: Next you will be tellin' us you can't even OC in Texas.:eek2:

They must be valid CHL license holders. The only difference between them and us is that they are actually Attending the school. Its not as if they are giving it to every 18 year old on campus.

It is comparable to changing the law about a regular CHL holder to be able to carry in a courthouse or something. Same rules - different venue.
