View Full Version : 4W Lo Issues

The past couple of times I've been out, something seems a little off with 4W Lo and wondering if anyone has any thoughts for me. I'm in a 2008 Rubicon, with lift & 33's.

At any rate, initially, 4W Lo and either first or second gear would give me a nice slow crawl with little or now throttle. On steep down hill sections, I'd get a nice steady pace with no braking.

Last couple of times out, 4W Lo in first or second barely moves, and even down hill, I find myself having to use the skinny pedal to keep moving. And, when I do give it a little gas, there seems to be a little lag, followed by a lurch - feels like it's rolling a bit then reengaging.

Any thoughts? Maybe I'm not getting it properly into Lo, or something else?

Thanks. that's what I'm doing. Rolling in 4W H at about 2 or 3 mph, transmission in neutral, then shifting down into 4W L.

You've probably already done this, but I'll ask anyway. Have you checked your transmission fluid lately? Is the level good? Has the fluid been toasted?

Good thought. I have, but can't hurt to take another peek.

My guess is that you've gotten familiar with what it does and comfortable enough to want a little more speed. So just up it a gear.

Experience teaches us all and helps us grow.

when you switch into 4L with a manual do I need to engage the clutch?

How are you shifting into 4lo?
you should shift to 4 hi let that engage then while rolling slowly pull it firmly back into 4 lo.
i always do this in neutral.

That ain't what the manual says.

you either need to disengage the clutch or put it in neutral. Don't do it with the clutch engaged, it is not happy.

OP, are you saying that your crawl ratio is too slow? This sounds like a good thing to me! I will trade you t-cases!

there can't be that many yellow unltds with half doors out there. good taste sir. You hardly ever see half doors here in tx. I have only seen one so far and it was on a black 2 door sahara in Spring Valley.
