Well i've been looking for a "cool" keychain to go with my new JK and i couldn't find one that i liked so i decided to just make one.The keychain is still in its "green" state and needs to be sintered in a furnace for about 10 hours or so at 2,500 degrees then i'm going to polish it. It will be an almost mirror finnish. If anybody is interested i'll post a pic of it completed as soon as i can get it done ... looks like about 3 more weeks, we are busy.
Oh, that 45 angle on the upper left of the keychain is to make putting a key ring on easier ( .250 thick ) and if i'm in a pinch i should be able to use that end as a screw driver.

It will be an almost mirror finnish, its kinda hard to tell on that poker chip pic. March is the end of our fiscal year so we are busy tryin to get as much out the door as we can. After it settles down a bit i'll see if i can make some more. Mine was a "government" job so i had to be sneeky. I'm guessin they will probably end up being too expensive to sell, just the carbide is $22+ a pound then the pressing, slicing, milling, grinding, sintering and polishing ... lots of hours there. Maybe they will let me do it for the cost of the material and i can do the rest off the clock. I'll look into it with one of the salesmen and get the OK from the boss man and go from there.

heres a keychain I tied recently. I carry a similar one at work. the monkey fist has a steel ball in it. i find myself in some pretty dicey areas from time to time as a result of my job and its nice to know i have little thumper with me just in case. I'm going to tie another one with the same monkey fist but i'm going to add a turks head to the middle. should be pretty killer.

that's cool, my knot knowledge is best viewed on my shoes.
Do you have that on a quick release clip so you don't have take the key out to crack somebody with that thing.

I dont carry too many keys so I have just one ring on and i just hold the keys. I've never had to wack anybody but if I did, it could do real damage. the ball is actually from an old computer mouse. very easy to tie.

Thats pretty cool thing your making for your key chain.

I am little old school. I just carry a regular key ring with about 6 or 7 keys on it.

that's the unfolded view with all tools unfolded. when it's folded, there's not a single sharp edge and it's a hair over 2 inches long. quite a low profile, which is good thing cause i err...need plenty of space in that area ;)

but in all seriousness, when folded it's narrower than the fob end of my JK key and about 2/3rd the length of the entire key. so it's actually smaller than the JK key, but serves as an indespensible and extremely handy set of tools when i'm on the go!

I'd guess that is a D20 for damage at least.

Actually a pretty good idea :yup: ... Which means it is likely illegal here in NY. :naw:

Yeah in NY, especially in the city, even the cops rob you. They don't want you fighting back with legal weapons because then they can't take you to the pokie.

NYcity :gak:

Been there, hated it, left. Havent been, nor do i ever plan on, going back. I was working on a power panel that wouldnt function, took the front off and saw light holes, crawled around to the back to see what was up. Holes. Bullet holes. 45 cal. Hillbilly Signature stlye. IN the city, not to far from Times square. 7-8 blocks. :eek!:

thankfully i am nearly as far as i can get from it and remain in this state.

Yeah, kids don't play cops and robbers with fake guns in NYC......when they say "I'll shoot you" they mean it.:rotflmao1:

that is very cool!
how didyou cut those lines in it? somekindof special tool? CNC?

BJeepJK
03-25-2007, 09:50 PM
On a CNC at work ... government job ... shhhhh. I used a drill bit for the lights and a ball nose bit for the slots , drilled some lead holes first then made a "rectangular pocket" to clean it up. carbide is some hard stuff so all of our tools are diamond coated, drill bits, grinding wheels, saw blades ... . It shrinks and gets even tougher to work after it's sintered.

Thanks, it should get in the furnace Easter weekend, i'll post a pic before and after polishing. I'm also going to ask a salesmen what it would cost to make about 10-20 of them, prob too much but if you know a machinist that works with steel or aluminum it would be ALOT cheaper. Maybe somebody on here has a mill and make them out of 1/4 plastic. The dimensions of mine are 2.137 x .718 and .250 thick.

BJeepJK

You have to make one ... Never got mine in the furnace yet to sinter it, the boss found out i made it and has been keeping an eye on me (somebody snitched). I hope he goes on vacation soon. Anybody on here have a furnace that goes up to 2,500 degrees F? I need to put it in there for about 10 hours or so and be there when it comes out ... Grrrrr.
It'll get done soon i hope.

Here's mine. A fellow Jeep owner from the earlycj5.com forums had these made up and was taking orders a while back. I bought it originally for my CJ, but I like the thing so much I put on my key ring for the JK.

Can you use a ceramics kiln?

BJeepJK
05-07-2007, 05:09 PM
hmm, not sure what temps. a ceramics kiln get up to. If anybody knows I might be able to use it on some other project.
All of the stars were lined up this weekend ... it's finally done ( not polished yet tho ). It only took an hour or two to make and about 2 months in my toolbox waiting for this moment. My camera is in the Jeep, as soon as I go out there i'll grab it and post a pic

Did you ever get any more of these made? I wonder if you could make it out of aluminum? I may intersted in either one if your still messing with them.

BJeepJK
11-22-2007, 11:35 PM
It's too risky to make more at work, all we do is carbide. I know some guys in some other shops that might be able to make them out of metal or aluminum.
I'll check and see if they can sneak something through.
