I alwasy forget to do it but def good to shut off the esp going through mud it drops the speed of the engine and slows you down.

I learned this the hard way. I should have easily made it through, but because I forgot to turn mine off, I stopped in the middle of the mud, and then could not get back out. So I did the steering wheel, ESP button deal and shut off my traction and ESP so I should no longer have this problem.

Why did Jeep made it so difficult? Why not a simple switch? :naw:

Maybe I'm missing somthing here. What is difficult about pushing the ESP off button?
And for the sake of edification, what is the steering wheel / ESP thing?

I think (probably) the complaint with the ESP button comes when you stop/turn off your engine- you know, you're out wheeling and stop to chat or watch someone do something stupid. Then when you get back in and start up, the ESP is back on again. So if you're not paying attention, you end up trying to run some mud with the ESP (that you thought was off) on. :yup: And suddenly you are the "someone doing something stupid" :rotflmao2:
The steering wheel ESP thing- this is mainly for guys that are lifted and have trouble with the ESP kicking in while on the road. There is a a code (kinda like a video game cheat code- one of those turn wheel left 1/4 turn and touch your elbow to your nose, then turn wheel right 1/2 turn and touch your left foot to your right knee :rotflmao2: ). Anyway, the code disables the ESP completely so you don't have it on in 2wd and you don't have to worry about turning it off in 4wd.

Oh. I think I see what you're kind of telling me. I do agree keeping it off for normal use would be great but then we would forget to turn it on when we need it..... and be one of those guys.
Thanks.

Hello all!! I am fairly new to the Jeep community.. make that totally new. I am picking up my 08 4-door Rubicon next week!!! I am pretty stoked. I have spent the meantime studying up on what works good and what works bad. I downloaded and read about some of the features such as ESP. If you look it up in your owners manual (what the heck is that:thinking:) it will go over the steering wheel trick. Seem's that several people have had trouble with the ESP kicking in during regular driving making for dangerous conditions. While some people said the steering wheel trick didn't work they cut wires or pulled the fuze. However the fuze also powers the ABS system so...... Hope that helps.

I had to perform the steps several times before I was able to shut off the ESP/Traction control systems. For the most part, I drive with both the ESP and Traction control disabled by using the instructions on the manual to disable them. Simply pressing the ESP button only turns off the traction control and the next time you start your Jeep it is back on again. The ESP button does not shut off the ESP which is what helps to prevent the Jeep from sliding out of control on turns. Every now and then, I am on a dirt or gravel road and will feel the need to fish the back-end around a little. By simply pressing the ESP button to turn off the traction control, the ESP will still try to prevent the Jeep from fishing around. Also, when in the mud, having the ESP on can take away from some of the fun. This is why I disabled both the ESP and traction control with the steering wheel / ESP button combination.
The first time I went out mudding I got stuck because when I was in the mud, the traction control and ESP didn’t want the tires to spin, or the Jeep to fish so it reduced my throttle, kept taping the breaks on the different wheels, next thing I know I am stuck in the middle of the mud without any momentum.

Yup, with the Traction control off (by simply pressing the ESP button) the Jeep will start to fish out, the ESP will then sense that the Jeep is fishing, then will start to apply the different brakes needed to counter you trying to fish out the backend of the Jeep.
I may re-enable the ESP and Traction control when the snows starts to fall, but then again, I may come across a parking lot or field that looks just to appealing to pass up.
yep you can't fishtail in 2wd cuz you can't turn off the esp all the way, just teh traction control part.
Of course the problem I see is that if I were to disable esp comletely, I would lose my BLD function as well, so I give up donuts for having all 4 tires clawing instead of just one front and one back throwing up a rooster tail.

I did the steering wheel trick and I turned the ESP off and I keep it off all of the time.
Jeeps don't need this nonsense. Minivans do.

did you lose your bld function? I would turn it all off if it weren't for the loss of those, they have saved my bacon several times. I agree and when the govt. mandates that crap like this be put on vehicles it raises the price for the consumer. How about letting the consumer decide if they want to pay for esp/tractioncontrol/tpms/ and all that other mandated garbage.

Your BLD is its own computer that will remain on. As far as I know, the BLD cannot be shut off unless maybe you pull its fuse. My BLD still works great with the ESP and Traction control disabled.

Push it and keep it pushed for abt 5-7 seconds till you hear a tone and "ESP OFF" is displayed on the dash.

right, and you can only do this in 4 hi.
you don't have to do it in 4 lo, cuz it happens automatically
in 2wd or 4 hi if you just push it without holding it then it turns off just the traction control.
Confusing enough yet?

nevermind just got it to work. i think the trick is just count to seven and release the button then you will hear the chime after you release the button (for the left turn, and top center) first couple of times i held it just waiting for the chime and it doesnt work like that, so count to seven and release then you hear the chime just after releasing. hope that helps:clap:
