What's up everyone. Here are some pics of my latest mods to my JK. I added a sport cage rack for the kayak and I did the bedliner grill because I really liked that mod on some other jeeps in the forum.

One nice kayak. Too bad you couldn't get one in bright safety green.
I really like your kayak mount. Where did you get that?
My daughter and friend are in the orange tandem. I'm the old guy in the yellow.

Here is my Sahara half way through a 1400km drive to the Bay of Fundy with my Kayaks. I have a Congo Cage with Yakima rollers. The only complaint that I have is the wind noise is a killer on the highway. I ended up wearing my noise canceling headphones on the way home.

Hey Octo - Did you actually tie to the loop on the hood? I was trying to decide if it was glued on like the nipples of if it would actually work as a tie-down point. Thanks!

I bought the TJ sport cage rack from quadratec. It is a yakima rack that I had to modify it's setup. The JK roll bar is too wide in diameter for this rack to fit correctly ontop so this is what I did.
On the back cross bar, you need to unzip the rollcage pad and attach the clamps onto the smaller tube inside, under the padding. On the front, you need to take out the plastic channels above the front doors, and the mounts have to be turned around so they don't hang out of the jeep, rather sit inside the roll cage.
It worked really well without any cutting, drilling or changes to either the rackk or the truck. This is a fair weather rack so it has to come off for the top to go back up.

I like the congo cage alot, I couldn't fit the jeep in the garage with it so the temporary is a better solution. I haven't seen the congo cage with the yakima accessories, those look awesome on that.

You are right, It is a necky looksha sport. I just picked it up off craigslist in ATL, they had a yellow one as well. Good call. I have only had it out once in the sound because the water has been really rough from all these storms. I can't wait to take it out for a long tour.

I live near Atlanta and I got mine on Craigslist a couple of months ago.
It handles great!

The loop on the hood is designed as a tie down for the windshield, so I figured it had to be a bit solid.
I normally only use the loop on the hood for long (4+ hour) drives. I have it strapped at both the front and rear carriers. The hood strap is just for my piece of mind.
Here is a picture of my Congo Cage as I was fabricating a custom standoff. The extra short ones that came with it were not long enough raise and lower the soft top with one person. You can see Yakima accessories without the kayaks in place.

FYI-
Somebody else had a post where he used his hood windshield tie down as a kayak strap point and it broke.

I had thought about that but couldn't find a light bar I liked.
And hoisting my Yak up to the roof isn't fun.
I have a 40X48 utility trailer I am converting to a kayak trailer, alot easier to load.
I'll post pistures when I get it finished.

There's a great product out from Thule that brings the kayak down alongside lifted vehicles for loading and unloading. It's called the Hullavator. When my tour in Guam is done with and I get orders back stateside I'm definitely getting this for my kayak. I can't think of any other way to get an 18' sea kayak on top of a jeep after I've lifted it 6" and put 38" tires on it.

it's ok. it's easy to remove, which i like. but since it attaches to the spare, my kayak barely stretches the gap. also, i had to modify it to fit my spare.

Hey Octo,
How tall a stand-off did you end up making? I need to make one of these myself. Was gonna use 1/2" EMT conduit.
How's it working for you? Also do you have to take the license plate holder off so you can swing the cage back enough?
Thanks for the pic and info!

Nice setup, but why don't you fab up something like this...a little support hoop on the front inbetween your water tank and fuel cans. That way your tent will work with only your kayaks removed, and you won't have that support wrapped around your tent.

Thanks If you can believe it I got them for free. A guy needed my JK to measure in order to sell them. I wasn't even sure if I would like them but I have a rack back there and I can throw back packs and whatever from the back seat and nothing goes anywhere. Then with the dust cover below that it keeps the cargo area cleaner.

Keith,
Basically I have 2 constraints limiting me: 1) The front of the boats can not be too close to the back of the Jeep due to Y axis articulation, that is to say that when the Jeep starts up a steep incline I can't have the boats hit it in the back. 2) The shape on the bottom of the boats limits how far the saddles can be apart.
So to put a standoff bar (or hoop) in the front area, I would need longer boats. I currently have 14 footers so I could up to 16 footers and probably make the saddle distance work. However, I believe that would be a problem with the articulation. Look at the photo below:
http://my.project-jk.com/data/500/medium/SlowlyDown.JPG
See how even this mild angle would cause long kayaks to jam into my top, assuming I had my top up?
I am all for a pair of longer boats, the 14 footers are too short for my taste and prefer 17 foot boats myself, but I don't see a practical way to carry them off road.
Dave
