I found an ultra cheap and effective way to add mirrors when the doors are off.
This is for the 2007 Jeep JK's only.
First, find your AirConditioning vent. (Notice windows in the distance are an AutoZone Parts, This can be accomplished in the parking lot)
http://thumb7.webshots.net/t/16/16/8/41/5/2822841050099759627tPfKuK_th.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2822841050099759627tPfKuK)
Next, turn it closed so the flat/solid side faces you.

Third, Take the small round mirror you just purchased in AutoZone and line it up to make sure it is slightly smaller than the vent,

Fourth, remove the back piece of paper that reveals the sticky surface of the foam tape which is on the mirror and stick it in place.

Enjoy it!

And add another to the passengers side if desired and adjust for best view
http://thumb7.webshots.net/t/53/753/3/42/26/2127342260099759627xGqxmm_th.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2127342260099759627xGqxmm)
This mirror can be rotated out of view to use the Air duct as usual.

so... you have to sleep in your Jeep now too?
Which mod sent the spousal unit into a tizzy? [mine was a new air compressor - technically not even a mod... but she knows where it was leading... and actually, i havent even purchased it yet!)
The seats recline quite well, but you'll end up with kidney compression if you roll around. (oh, leave the doors on at night so ya dont fall out) Do you have any good ideas for showering besides driving around nekid chasing rain clouds? Last time i did that it went and got nice, i was sudsy for weeks...

:rotflmao: That was good...
I was actually wondering with my 2 door (without the backseat) if there's be any good way to sufficiently pad the floor for a reasonably comfortable bed for two... I'm thinking worst-case-scenario (long road trip with no room at the inn, camping trip where the tent gets mauled by a bear, etc.). Any ideas there?

Don't think that amputation is really in the cards... I'm not a skilled ninja doctor, after all. :D I'm pretty solidly built, but about average in flexibility. I think I could fit, curled up, without much of a problem. It'd probably require moving the front seats as far forward as they'd go, and I'm not claiming it would be the most comfortable way to go, but I think it could be doable... in any case, this is a total thread hi-jack, so I'm going to drop it for now.

Hmm.... very clever mod and location, but in CA I'm pretty sure the law specifies that it needs to be an external side view mirror. I did mine for around $16. If someone could clarify the law, though, I'd be happy to go with this -- it's way more slick.

You could always argue that since there is no door, technically it is an outside mirror.

great idea, as far legality... has anyone ever actually been pulled over for no mirrors? To me its kinda like the front licence plate in Texas, I havn't ran one for years and never got a ticket.

03-28-2007, 01:34 PM
Awesome mod, I just did it myself, although I have yet to drive with the doors off because of the rain. As you all know, every state is different, but I asked a police officer about it and at least in Texas you only have to have a mirror that has a clear view 200 feet behind you. He said it doesn't matter where it is, as long as you can see that far behind you. I used to run the cheap auto zone mirror in the bolt hole, but it never could get it adjusted right. Now I just use the windshield mirror, but I like this mod because it will let me see in the blind spots.
By the way, I have never met anyone who has actually gotten a ticket for the liscence plate, but I along with 4 or 5 others I know have gotten pulled over for only that and given a warning. I still don't use one though, its pointless and I like the look better without.

Mirrors get my vote... you do have to have a drill ($69.99-$149.99). or at least a drill bit ($5.00) to put the hole in the mirrors. no tool needed to stick on some .97 cent mirrors

OK - I think we may have overlooked one crucial piece of information on this mirror mod. I am an impartial voter - I have yet to drill my side mirrors, but the drill is sitting in the garage waiting, and I went out to Wallymart last night with the missus and grabbed 4 of those little mirrors (1 for each side mirror, 1 for each side vent, along with $70 of other Jeep-related stuff).
Here's the big-money question: Do we have to drill these INTERIOR mirrors so that they don't drip into the vents, or do they have adequate drainage right from the factory? :rotflmao:

Good question. IF we dont drill them, will they ice over in the winter?
(as a side note however, i DO know that if i position any of them to get the proper viewing angle when the spousal unit sits in the passenger seat inna dress, I will get drilled right in the side of the head.)

I dont know about other states but here in Massachusetts I think you are fine.
Massachusetts General law, Chapter 90, section 7: "Every motor vehicle shall be equipped with at least one mirror so placed and adjusted as to afford the operator a clear, reflected view of the highway to the rear and left side of the vehicle."
The question is do you want to be pulled over and debate this with one of our fine State Troopers after having a glass of wine or two with dinner?

I'm so glad I live in the south where they expect you to do dangerous and sometimes stupid things. Everyone knows to call 911 automatically when you hear phrases like "Yep that ought to work" or "Hey ya'll watch this". So many fellows ride w/o doors and mirrors it's crazy but then agian you can still ride in the bed of a pickup here. The law requires an outside mirror. I think that is a federal mandate like speed limits were when it was 55mph max. My luck would be I am the only one in a convoy of jeeps to get pulled over. Aside from all that I like to use them to back up and change lanes so I am off to the hardwear store after heading by the truck stop because Autozone nor Advance had anything except a mirror head that was useful yesterday.

Not in BC it won't. Just like paulp575 said, Can't drive without the doors on (technically). Only the years the CJ was sold where doors were an option, and therefore not required, would it be legal.

Thank you for the write up. I did this a few weeks back and it's not a bad way to get a little help with mirrors.
:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:
Considering the original post is from 2007..this is an olddddddd thread. :rotflmao1:
But regardless, I did this mod in a pinch when I first took my doors off. It made me "somewhat" legal but the visibility really sucked when it came to driving on paved roads. As cool and simple as this mod is, it really wasn't that effective for me. I have since purchased $15 mirrors from an auto parts store and use those in my hinges when the doors are off. The little circular mirror is still attached to my vent, but is never used.
