ECU reset procedure

I came across this at Quadratec and wanted to share it. I'm not sure if it works on the JK.

Jeep Electronic Control Unit Reset (91' newer Jeep Wranglers)

When installing new power or performance accessories how does the computer for the Jeep know that it has a new accessory? Most of the time the computer does not. The computer would need to be reset to take full potential of the performance accessories you have added.

The Electronic Control Module, or ECU as its commonly called, stores the information for your vehicle and your driving habits in its memory. The memory is maintaned by a series of capacitors that hold a charge and maintain power for the ECU when the vehicle is turned off. The following procedure will allow you to reset the memory and allow the computer to 're-learn' how to drive by adjusting to the drivers habits and the vehicles modifications.



1. Disconnect the battery by removing the positive battery cable. Remember, the positive battery cable.

2. Ground the positive cable to the negative cable for 30 seconds to erase the electric charge in the capacitors.

3. Reconnect the positive cable to the battery.

4. Turn the key to on but do not start.

5. Turn the headlights on.

6. Turn the headlights off.

7. Turn the key off.


The ECU has now been reset to its factory settings. For the next 50 warm-up periods the ECU will re-learn the engine and driving habits for your driving conditions and the newly installed parts.

I heard that if you do the steps backwards, and disconnect the negative cable, the engine remembers where it put the rest of the power it was supposed to have!:rotflmao:

i haven't tried it yet. i was going to wait until i got my new exhaust, but i'm curious as to whether or not anyone has as well...

There's a much faster way to do this....

1.) Disconnect both the Negative and the Positive cables from the battery.
2.) Touch the two cables together, but do not touch them to the battery!
3.) Hold them together for 30 seconds.
4.) Put them back on the battery, Positive first, then Negative...

You're done!

I wish it would learn it's way to work in the morning and drive my tired a$$ there.

newer cars adapt to the driver...if you baby it all the time, you will have less ower than someone who jumps on it all the time...

all you have to do is disconnect the battery for 10 minutes or so. you will feela difference.

and no it wont figureit out it gets confused if you messwith stuff lol, it will takeit a while, it took my mustang 3 weeks and it still didn make a difference, unhooked the battery and whala, nice power boost.
if it hasto re learn everythijng it is easier than adding to what it has already learned.

so....nobody has said this works for the jk....yes it works for a mustang but .....
