Im looking into purchasing a nice pop-up trailer to use for camping. Im not a die hard camper, and this will be used only a few times a year, maybe 10 at most. Does anyone here own a pop-up trailer, and if so, can you post some comments/pictures of it. I'm looking for recomendations, what to stay away from, recommended lengths, and issues towing it. I have an 07 4dr JK, and I'm thinking with something like this, I should be good to go. Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!!

Here is my set up.
It is the Fleetwood Evolution E3.
It is big and weighs a lot to the JK's limit you can down to the E2 and it dosen't have a slied out and saves you about 500 lbs.
I love mine, you can do a search for them. Fleetwood is not the only offroad trailer.

I have a 20 year old Starcraft, 24' tent trailer that I'd be willing to sell since I no longer use it. Want to come out to So Cal for a road trip?

I like the E2 and the weight is much better at 2500lbs vs 3000 lbs. I really have to be careful with what I add onto the trailer because 500 lbs adds up quick and plus it is literally a drag going up hills. The E3 has the slide out which is really awesome. So far so good. I hope when I regear it will help up the hills. I would recomend the trailer it is well made.

Nice! I like how the extra side pops out.
I pick up mine next month, getting one 2nd hand from a friend. Can't beat the price though...FREE!!! :D
Mine isn't as nice but for being 20+ yeas old, it's still in pretty decent condition. Just needs a little TLC here and there. ;)

We have been quite happy with this one, but we have never had a Fleetwood to compare with.
I've also got a fleetwood (Westlake). LOVED the Evos!!! I just couldn't turn down the deal we got on ours though. We love it so much that we're trading it in this winter for a full travel trailer, so no more JK on the camping trips :(

Something to consider if you purchase a tent trailer.
Purchase a load leveling hitch with an anti say bar.
The load leveling part is just that. It redistributes the weight so that you can level it. You can avoid that sag at the hitch point and make your ride level.
The Anti sway bar also does just that. It prevents or minimizes any sway from the trailer. It is adjustable and prevents the trailer from fishtailing.
My set up is very stable and level which is the safest set you can have.

Fleetwood bought the pop up division / manufacturing from Coleman back in the early 90's. Coleman trailers became Fleetwood  But YES as of recently Fleetwood sold the pop up division to another Brand, :naw: SO Yes they are out of the Pop up market. Fleetwood still make some great toy haulers and small light wieght trailers, but yes, no pop ups anymore:crazyeyes:. But the ones that are still out there, I like them......... I hope the new company continues them...... I dont know what the name change will be so I still call them Fleetwoods.......

not much room under to upgrade but it might be possible to switch them out. The way things are now the dealer would probably do it for you at no charge........ flip the axel or lift it a little to fit them under....

I would have to look at one in real life. I dought that theirs enough room for the larger tires. If they do come with a regular spring type axle the flip may be possible, then larger wheels and tires.
Guess iam going to have to take a road trip to my Fleetwood dealer....

Sgt. Evil,
Just heard back from Fleetwood Trailers. They say that there is NOT enough room on the Cobalt for the 15" wheels and tires that are on the E1, 2, and 3.
However, my local dealer said he has a new Cobalt in stock and I am more than welcome to come up and look at it.
I think that this 15" wheel combo may be possible.

Seems like you could make a shackle setup or a lift/drop block on the axle and leaf spring to get you the extra room.

Thanks for the link. That trailer turned out real good. I would hat to spend $6,000 on a new pop-up and then cut the hell out of it like that, but it did turn out good.
Going to stop up to the dealer tomorrow and take a look at the cobalt, maybe something can be done.

I was told by a dealer about a month ago when purchasing some parts for ours that Fleetwood sold there pop-up Mfg to Coleman.
Again, checked on this, the new company will be licensing the name coleman for the new trailers... so coleman did not buy the pop up trailer division, but is loaning their name for the trailers. (At fee of course).

Both the Tentrax and Sherpa are nice and light; my pick of the two would be the Sherpa for the Transformer-like modular design and the overall economy.
The Conquerors and Horizons are a little porky ---- I don't think my tent will be a problem in the wind though. But "a little wind" is a relative expression; Georgia rarely gets days where sustained winds are over 20 mph...

Hey!!! There is nothing wrong with campgrounds if you go to the right ones...:D :D:yup:
We got a pop up in July- sold it in September and upgraded to a Hybrid...a 17 foot hard sided camper
with beds that pop out the sides like a pop up-- there is more room, better insulation ( we got it to go winter camping in the up of MI) and a full bathroom...all bonuses if you are in the middle of nowhere-- plus...we can be gone in minutes instead of the tedious packing and closing of a pop up...and if it rains...ugh. I love it- in fact I am rarely home anymore!!!!!! LOL

We don't have one, but I think the hybrid campers are great. Easier than a pop up, and all the conveniences! Our problem is that with a 2 door, they are too heavy to tow. So when we are ready to get something, I am guessing it will be a class c so we can still bring our JK with us.

I went with the Fleetwood Evolution E1 model mostly due to the towing capacity of the JK and I did not like the idea of a toilet/shower in the larger E2 and E3 models - I have been extremely pleased. I have pulled it with the JK back and forth across the country 4 times and have over 15K miles on it and many nights of camping since June 07. I like the off-road utility and front deck for stowing gear, coolers, firewood, bikes, etc. It is very comfortable inside and I like the spartan ruggedness of the interior. I also got the canoe and bike attachments which have been great for organizing space on the long trips.

Hi Hilldweller,
I was extremely fortunate and found mine for sale used from a guy in the local area in the Expo Portal last March. Within hours of the listing I agreed to pay the asking price and picked it up the next day. Its extremely rare for a used AT to hit the market so you gotta jump on it.
Anyway, to answer your question: it was built in 2007 and has the nosebox, fuel cans, water tank, tailgate, EeziAwn 1400 RTT, Engel MT45 fridge, battery/charger kit, rear stabilizer, 360 coupler, new style wood shelf & old style stainless shelf.
As you saw, I made a kit to add kayaks. I am also rigging a hot water system based on a 2 burner Zodi Extreme and marine boat products. The luxury of a hot shower should never be underestimated.

Yes; the Zodi shower is wonderful... I use a Coleman table & lantern holder to suspend it and a bulk LP tank for fuel; easier than the little bottles. Great for dishes too.
Nice find on the trailer; there will be a few here and there for sale after Martyn finishes the Clamshell he's designing.
I'd sure like one myself...
If you want to expand past the popup, you could try something like my Kiwi from Jayco. Empty weight of 2400 lbs.

This looks really nice - still to heavy for us to use with our 2 door, but maybe someone with an unlimited could use it.:dontknow2: It is located in MarylandNot a bad deal, just don't like them 10" wheels. After looking at a Cobolt at my local dealer I just don't see how you could add a lift and larger tires. The Door is in the way....

I'm a huge fan of AT having had one follow the Jeep all summer!
And with a little modification it can haul kayaks IN ADDITION to the tent.
