I pulled the body off for easy access to everything from the top and to make it easy to maneuver the six foot + powertrain into place by myself.
The body off went pretty good.

Looks like your approach to doing the swap with the body off makes the process a lot easier....Cant wait to see the final project...Best of luck and thanks for keeping us posted...What trans are you using? Thanks...

Its a 2008 LX motor, I really dont know what the numbers are. Somewhere around the 350 and 390 but with the high performance exhaust and CAI I'm sure it will be more than enough for my needs. Not looking for a racer, just something that if I need power to get out of, or avoid trouble its there, and maybe even improve the gas milage a little.

That is awesome....I can tell you that the LX motors from the 300, Charger, now defunked Magnum are great motors...good power. You are looking at about 350 HP. You will be very impressed with the power and Hemi roar!!!

With my 06 Magnum R/T AWD I was getting about 16 City and 24 MPG highway but it is alittle more aerodynamic than the JK. With over 85K kilometers I have no issues. Also, side note if you want mileage let me know and I will forward on a home made MDS indicator light for your Hemi that I placed in my Magnum to know when it shuts down to 4 cylinder mode and get better fuel economy.

Keep up the great work! and get some sound clips when you get it together!

How would something like that hook up? Would be interesting to see if ever really does shut down to 4

With the MDS I found the 4 cylinders kicked in around 20-25MPH upto 83 MPH depending on of course: if you get on the go pedal, any incline that requires more juice to maintain speed and idling is only in 8 cylinder mode.

Here is the steps I used to make my own MDS indicator light.

I wouldn't count on it. The Grand Cherokee with the 5.7L Hemi gets 13 mpg city/18 highway, and it's A LOT more aerodynamic than the JK.

Wow, what a thread. Awesome job!! I'm curious though, Will there be any problems with state inspections? I know some states don't even have inspections but how about for us that do? I can imagine Virginia saying Oh no, it has to be left the way it came from the factory or some such nonsense.

Just saw an episode of Extreme 4x4 about a hemi TJ motor swap:

Motor has to be offered at some point in the same Make vehicle
Motor has to be same year or newer
Has to have all emission gear equiped
Has to pass emmisions

I might be mission somethin, but there was a list of four things to make it 50 state legal.

My total cost was 10. includes motor, trans, aev kit, and all the extra parts needed. It took me almost a year to get everything together that I needed. I bought when I found good deals.

Can you give a breakdown of the price of parts? Just an estimate would be nice.

I was thinking of doing it myself but the local shop will do a USED swap for $10k. I might as well have them do it if it cost you that in parts. They have done 50 or so conversions.

Did you use a new or used motor/tranny?

Can you give a breakdown of the price of parts? Just an estimate would be nice.

I was thinking of doing it myself but the local shop will do a USED swap for $10k. I might as well have them do it if it cost you that in parts. They have done 50 or so conversions.

Did you use a new or used motor/tranny?

If I could get this done for $10K around me, I would have already done it. As long as it is street legal and will pass smog - go for it.

Just found this thread... all I can say is WOW!! That is amazing! I restored a 67 Mustang from the ground up, but have been too intimidated to try this on my JK. I don't do well with vehicles that have brains..... Maybe it's time to start reconsidering! GREAT job!

That looks great! You did an awsome job. Hopefully the price of engines will drop enough that I can do this some day.

First, I'd like to say that was pretty cool that you attempted and completed the job. My hats off to you.

Second, I wish I lived close to "OutThere" cause I would have been there in a minute to feed you beer or pizza or whatever it took just to watch such an accomplishment.

Third, and most important, I would like to see the breakdown of parts. I'm really interested in where you got the motor and tranny. I just ran across this thread for the first time today and it was a lot to read through but I though I got all of the important stuff and I didn't see you mention where you got the parts.

Thanks again for sharing this and I am truly humbled by the experience.

Scratch the last question in my previous post. I just looked at the JK Hemi V8 Install Guide from AEV and it looks like they offer everthing direct from them. I'm assuming that's were you got everything.

If you don't mind me asking what was the seller's name/store on ebay for the motor? Also, what vehicle did the tranny come from?

Mods, this thread should be a sticky to show everybody that this type of swap can be done at home with simple tools and not necessarily by a full on professional shop. It IS indeed professional work, however.

My wife would flip the f**k out if she came into the garage and saw my Jeep in that state. She gets freaked out enough when do things like trim the fender flares.:eek2:

Awesome job.

dsy, tell them what your wife did say when she got home and saw your BRAND NEW Jeep body hanging in the garage... :brows:

And remember this folks, this Rubicon (dsy's Rubicon) is THE FIRST Rubicon off the Jeep line in Ohio!!! He picked it up there and drove it home and took it apart... Now that takes some nerve and confidence in your abilities! Again ...

Probably too blingy but was bored today so I got out the rattle cans. Did not care for the plain grey look of the engine cover insert.

Installed my Katzkins this weekend. Still need to get a shop to put the headrest covers on. I did not want to take the chance of ripping the stitching out.

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/2669/newleather1.jpg

Had to shoe horn the switches in for the heated seats. Not that many convient places to put them.

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/8782/heatswitches.jpg

Not to completely detract... how does the leather stand up to the weather?

And how were they to put on?

Looks very nice!

dsy,
Your new seat cover do look really good! I've got the Katkinz in my Chevy 2055HD and I really like them too. You really are the "Offical DIY Project Guy"!!! Do you think that you could swap the back doors with the front doors? I bet that you could...

Great job and of course thanks for the phone support today on my Hemi project!

I just received my Jeep Service manual in the mail on Friday. I bought CD instead of the paper manual that way I could print what I need and mark it up or even print it for someone else. The CD was $120 and the paper manual was $320

I called: 800-890-4038
