Yes I try a few times during the winter season....pull out the rods, snowshoes and hike in a few kilometers to some backcountry lakes with my kids and wife and set a few hooks and catch a few rainbow trout.

Kids enjoy building snow forts, throwing snow & making snow angels than fishing....but if we catch a few in the early morning, I make sure we start a fire and cook a few of them for lunch.

That is awesome....my 7 year old and 4 year love any chance to get out in the wilderness if it's fishing, hunting, hiking or camping. I usually get my wife out by getting the kids to ask mom to go and usually works.

I've gone a few times up here, but not a lot. Guess I'm pretty much over the "little fish" thing. I think I caught enough little fish as a kid to last a lifetime. Now all I want to do is catch a fish that would have a hard time getting through the hole...!!! The possibility to catch fish like that does exist up here tho. I know a lot of guys icefish for pike up here, which they say is fun. Guess I should bundle up and get out there more.
Good Luck...!!!

I know all about the little fish/pan fry's. I just enjoy watching the kids reel in the fish and see there faces of joy pulling the fish through the hole. We don't have that many monster fish in the back country lakes. The bigger fish are found in the larger lakes that don't freeze during winter. Plus I need a boat :sad2:

The lakes around here have some monster Doll varden and lake trout...some friends have taken some +40lb trout. Some people have caught surgeon as well....but of course catch and release.

I hear ya......nothing like watchin' a kid catch a little trout. Unfortunately I just sent my son/fishin' buddy off to school, so unless my "little" (she's almost 16 going on 30) wants to take up where her brother left off, I won't be doing as much fishin' as I was. Her brother used to take her down to the creek to fish for silvers(coho salmon) and she did catch one, so she is not opposed to fishing. So we'll see. Luckily, up here you can catch BIG fish in little lakes. My boss lives on a small lake that has has up to 30" rainbows in it. I just need to get my butt up off the couch and get out there...!!
Good luck this season to you and the kids...!!!

I love icefishing, and there is nothing like pulling a large walleye up through the ice. Living in MN though it's really easy to get out. Hell, you can have pizza delivered to you on the lakes......

Pizza on the lake, that's awesome.

With all the cold weather that we are getting, it looks like I'll be putting my Icefishing house out on the lake before Christmas. I can't wait :ya:

Putting the shack on this coming weekend, can't wait to sit on the ice with a case of beer and a tub of minnows.
