I'm going out this weekend to fish for the very first time. We will be fishing off a pier in a bay/inlet area, hoping for snapper, bluefish, stripped bass, I'm told. I am going with a fellow from the office and he is supplying everything (rod, reel, bait, etc). I just need to bring coffee & enthusiasm.
What one piece of sage advice would you give a newbie?

There is a fine line between fishing and standing on the pier like an idiot.

Fishing is a jerk at one end of a line waiting for a jerk on the other.....
No as far as advice goes: First listen to what he tells you to do. Pay attention when he shows you something. and watch the people around you.
Have fun! Take the camera and post up some pics when you get back.

Always keep a finger on the line. Feel, "feel" what is going on, keep the rod tip low so that when you feel a bite, (on the second nibble) you can quickly lift the pole and set the hook, then reel in.
If you wait too long the fish may swallow the hook which makes it difficult to release the fish afterwards if it is too small or illegal.
Biggest secret is holding your mouth right. It's a knack that few have.

First, a bit of thanks to all who posted their advice. I took it to heart & hopefully remembered a thing or two. I had a great time even though I didn't catch anything...well, except for the pier a few times! I worked thru those casting issues. I'll definitely go out again. Being the fool with the camera I have no shots of me actually holding a rod to prove I was there. In any case here are a few pics for you to laugh at.

Ready to fish! Plenty of hot coffee, it was a bit brisk at the crack of dawn.

My friend, Nick, acting like a douche & sucking face with bait.

The only thing we caught - crabs (and not the itchy kind!)

If it makes you feel better, I went fishing for 5 days this week and only pulled out one fish...man my lake's bad this fall. Looks like you had fun!

Even if you don't catch anything it is still fun.

It's about relaxing and having a good time, not about how many fish you catch.
and SUNSCREEN, bring some
