Just installed this tonight. Install was pretty straight forward. Longest part was waiting for the POR-!5 to dry as I had some rust under my hood hinges when I lifted em up..

You know.. worst comes to worst.. you can simply paint the wood black... can't hurt anything. and by the time the paint begins to wear.. hopefully you've found the right shovel for the job.

Yeah I thought of that as well but who knows how long it will hold up, they had one with a yellow handle as well which was plastic, so it could be painted..but I didn't think the paint would adhere well to that surface.

That looks like a great mod! How much excess noise does that produce at highway speeds? It looks like all the gaps in it would cause a lot of wind noise and whistleing...

I would have thought getting mired in a remote place without a shovel would be even more dumb. It looks great, Hellbound13.

And the problem with having it on your hood is? Its a throwback to the Willys and even old FJs had em there, its stable as hell and certainly not going anywhere.
It also allows me to swap it out for an axe of Hi--Lift at any time too.
Also please point me to a spare tire mount one that uses the stock setup? As far as I know there are none.
If it doesn't appeal to you, its very simple, you don't have to put it on your Jeep! Imagine that.

Try the army navy store. They should have black ones and green ones.

It looks nice but it seems a little high to me. Seems that the view is compromised a little.

Agree. There's also no reason that the paint won't hold up, as long as you do a little prep work. A light sanding of the wood finish and a wipe down with some liquid sandpaper or similar product and you should be good to go.
Nice set-up.

Thinking about an *under* hood shovel mount in the willys tradition myself. Anyone tried that? Think there's room? Hood ribbing might be too weak to support it well, that sheet metal is pretty thin...

I like it, can the long bolts be cut down?

I like it. Do you have to take it off to open the hood?

I do plan to cut the bolts down with a dremel a bit. Hood opens no problem.

way over priced at $149 , plus i didnt like the way it goes under the hinges and the weight of my hi lift on the hood,i sent mine back, getting the over priced mounts that mount the jack across the back lower bars, and now there on backorder:naw:

i saw one on one of hte websites somewhere (like quadrated or something)
it bolts in between the wheel and the bracket, and a tube extende throught he centercap, then the shovel is held on to it with a clamp or whatever.
really..id laugh if i saw a guy riding around town with a shovel on his hood

Do you have a link? As far as I know the only place I have seen this was on one that was made by a guy on the forums himself. They do not sell anything like this for the JK.

it isnt JK specific
they are universal, with a few different bolt patterns avaliable
you guys think that becuase we have a JK nothing fits....there are universal items avaliable that work with our vehicles. we arent special
ill get around to it eventually. it was kinda obscure to find, but when i found it it made sense where it was, and dumb me, i didnt save it

Gosh, maybe I shouldn't post this pic--I just hate it when people tell my they don't like what I've done to my Jeep. LOL. It's not the shovel, but is the ToughStuff Hi-Lift mount, which can be used to carry an axe and shovel. It'll give you an idea of how much the view is "compromised":

I thought about doing that before I decided to go with the Hi-lift Handle All kit.

Looks good, I plan on the same thing for my highlift jack. I used to have my hi lift mounted on the rear bumper of my YJ , but with the jack, 2 jerry cans full of gas, 35" tire, plus all my gear it would sag the rear end of my YJ down. I like the Tough stuff mount because I can get a heavy high lift jack mounted somewhere other than the back of my Jeep, it dosent take up any room inside, and its not way high up on a roof rack. Considering all that I will also be towing a small off road trailer with me, so again, the more stuff I can get off the back on my JK, the better.
BTW, for those of you looking for a cheap shovel mount... you can actully just stick it between your spare tire and tailgate, it gets wedged in there really well. 2 bungie cords wraped around your stock tire carrier will hold it from going anywhere, works great! have had mine there for 7,000 miles, no problems.
You can see the handle in this picture:
