Anyone know the basic law in regards to camping on public land?
Reason I ask is there are some areas in Kentucky that were once public roads but they have deteriorated to a point that only off-road vehicles can traverse them. They actually end up at a creek. It's a nice little area that most people don't go and it is public.
That said, my brother and I were looking at possibly camping a couple of nights in these areas but cannot find any basic laws when it comes to this kind of thing. I assume as long as we follow basic campground fire laws and litter laws, it would be legal?
It's public, therefore it's everybodies correct?

Know in Mass you need to stay within desgnated campground areas. Try and check the laws in the town hall website

In a national Forest i am sure u have to camp where they say u can. U call it public land but it really belongs to the government.
The government has strange ways of allowing us to use "our" land.

Find out which jurisdiction owns it and ask them about camping on it.
We camp in the National Forests around here; it's free but it has a few rules.
Usually if you are quiet, have a contained fire, and clean campsite, you can camp anywhere around here.
This site is on what used to be a logging road. It's in a remote area of the forest, on a river, and doesn't cost a dime to camp on.

The BLM is a wealth of info. But I would verify with local, state and federal agencies to make sure you're not tresspassing, illegally camping......

Thanks for the replies.
It's definetely not a national forrest area. It's west of Richmond, Kentucky by a place called Silver Creek.
It's in between rural areas.

Have you ever been down there to see if there are any campsites already set up? (i.e. visible firepits and cleared areas) I've been camping on public land in Colorado that had obviously been used for quite some time for camping - they were unmaintained sites, but it was easy to see that there had been a fair amount of use. Of course, it helped that there were people further down the river that let us know it was allowed. :)
If you can find out who it is, I'd just place a call in to whatever police dept. patrols the area - at the very least they should be able to let you know where you can find out.
