I'm looking to buy a new GPS to use off road. I'd like one that has a large view screen,3D would be a plus. I don't really care if it has topo maps. I'm going run it through my mini notebook which has them, but it needs to be viewable in the sunlight. any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Besides the built-in NAV (which I use to mark the trail), I use a Garmin Legend Cx. It is full colour, dash mountable, has ALOT of didfferent functions. I currently have every TOPO and road map for western Canada, and North Western U.S. loaded in it. The only downfall, if you are using batteries, lasts maybe 5 hours.

If you are running it through a mini notebook, why not just buy a GPSr antenna that plugs into a USB port? I have one and plug it into our laptop and run Delorme Street Atlas with it. You can plot courses and use it just like a big screen GPSr. Works really well if you aren't planning on carrying it around by hand. I think I paid about $35 for mine, my son bought one with Microsoft maps and the antenna for about $80.

Go with the GPSr antenna and try downloading falconview. Its free program, takes a little to learn to use it but you can download more maps than you will ever need from NGIA (national geospatial inteligence agency) and you can do just about anything you want on it.....including making your own maps if you so choose. And best of all, you already have the computer, a GPS antenna is cheap and the rest is free!!!!!!!!!

Actually it is being carried by hand for a short time. The main reason for it's use is for card hunts when our group has poker runs. The rest of the time I just like to know the area thats been covered.

I have the Microsoft Streets and Trips with USB GPS . $99 at Costco and you can use any TOPO Maps.
Works awesome.
You can set way points or track your travels. Mark locations with notes.
Very functional
