For those of you that dont know what a 609 is...

Dana 60 knuckles
+ Ford 9" third member and/or center section
= 609

EDIT:

WHY: You get the best of both worlds. One Ton strength on a commonly available Axle Housing

ADVANTAGES (Over a complete Dana 60 Front axle):

Availability. Dana 60 Front axles are getting scarce, and are very expensive new.
Ground clearance. The 9" hangs 5-7/8" below the axle centerline at its lowest point. The Dana 60 is 6-1/4". The custom "High clearance" Currie housing pictured above is trimmed to 5-9/16". A Dana 44 is 5-3/8".
Weight. The Ford 9" is lighter than a Dana 60.
Drop out center section. The 9" is very easy to set up gears and change the third member out.
Availability of a High Pinion third member. This axle utilizes a "high pinion" arrangement where the drive shaft enters far above the axle centerline. Up out of harms way. A Dana 60 was available with a High Pinion in Ford F350's. Expensive hard to find, and the differential is on the wrong side for a Jeep CJ.
Cost. 9" housings and components (gears, lockers etc) are priced significantly lower than Dana 60 (and even Dana 44) parts.

How much cheaper are they?

they really arnt...........especially if you want the esp/abs to still work

for about the same strength(probably more) and less money you could build

d44 center chunk/ 3/8 wall tubes
deadenbear dana 60 knuckles and inner c's for
35 spline arb locker
35 spline longfield super axles
dynatrac super stub hub and a set of spider trac cromo drive slugs

that would be pretty much bullet proof with the v-6 and any size tire

now for a hemi............ i think i would want a bigger ring gear

WOW........ That is a BIG statement...... comparing a Dana 44 to 9" :rotflmao2:
I'll like to see a 44 hold up to 1,200 hp, 9" do it all day long :yup:

no sir.........

low pinion std rotation 9's live like that.............

low pinion 9's suck for the front of a jeep and they would have to run RR

for the front of a 4x4 a HI9 center chunk needs to be used.............thrust loading becomes a very real problem.........true hi9 and currie have solutions to deal with this and it works!!! but it makes the assembely weaker and the third member is very expensive

also those 9's that deal with big power are solid, with 40!!!! spline axle shafts

now what i was getting at was the strength/ cost ratio........behind a v6/auto/atlas............

a 609 built with true HI9 chunks and all the right parts would be stronger but lots more money and a bit of overkill

for a hardcore jk on 40's or 42's a hybrid 44/60 would be super stout and less expensive

Sorry, slightly confused.

If the parts are a lot cheaper then even a D44, why is the cost higher for the 609 vs a 60 ?

Maybe a bad question, or obvious, but how do you change the fluids? 3rd member has to come out right?

You weld in a drain. I've seen 2 or 3 Hi 9s blow up, I'll stick with a hp60.
