I added a button to the dash that operates my garage door. I first attached speaker wire to remote. Drilled a hole out of it & ran the wire along the front speaker. I attached the remote under the steering column panel with velcro. Drilled a hole to the left of the steering wheel and attached the 1/2" button from radio shack.

Looks good, but do you think you could give us some more details about the wiring. If were were to this on any old garage remote where do we run the wire from the switch too?

I assume you did this so you could still have a garage door opener in the Jeep even with the top and doors off? It is a good plan; I may have to do something similar myself because I have been using the key-chain door opener for years.

This is a great idea. Been thinkng of doing it myself. Do you have that wired to an ignition-hot wire? That way with the top off, you would need the key to be able to open the garage door, you own personal HomeLink.

I did it because my remote's button broke off. I thought it would look cool this way. It was cheaper than buying a new remote also. I still run it off a 9 volt. It was simple. I'm no electrician. I just pulled the remote apart at the seams & sodered the wire to the back of the circut board behind the button. I then connected the to the back of the push button. I'll get more pictures soon.

I did sorta the same thing. I bought a homelink off ebay and installed it close to the same spot as you. I ran the power from the switched cig liter so no stranger can open my garage with the top down without a key. It works really nice! NOw i can open my garage door, my parents, and my sisters.

just wanted to mention that i did this mod this afternoon. i am not handy and have never soldered before and it was still very easy.
about 30 minutes and 5 bucks for the button & velcro (already had the speaker wire).
thanks to ScooterS for the write-up! :2thumbs:

Thanks to ScooterS for this awesome mod.... It was so easy to do, but just for more of a visual I thought I would put pics to this great mod.
First thing I did was pick up a momentary on/off button from RadioShack and find a place to mount it. I decided on the left side of the dash... it is easy to reach, easy to remove and not in the way.
http://my.project-jk.com/data/500/DSC00614.JPG
This was kind of tough finding a spot that was deep enough for the back of the button to be unobstructed and reach comfortably. If you have ever seen the inside of that panel there is not a lot of room. I found an open spot a little below the left inside vent... and the garage door remote half way down in a little opening between the frame.
Next I installed the button in the spot I chose for placement...
http://my.project-jk.com/data/500/DSC006161.JPG
http://my.project-jk.com/data/500/DSC006172.JPG
Now I soldered speaker wire as per ScooterS directions. To the back side of the PC Board to the pins of the button. Then the other end to the pins of the button.

http://my.project-jk.com/data/500/DSC00622.JPG
http://my.project-jk.com/data/500/medium/DSC006182.JPG
After that is all done tape down the wire velcro the remote and replace... I love this mod, because you can actually put that button anywhere you have room. I wanted it on my dash, but did nor want to drill a hole. Easier and cheaper to replace a panel then a front dash panel.

Thanks for the idea Scooter! I won't have to worry about my opener getting swiped when I have the top down..

I put plugs inline to make it easier to change the battery. I didn't have any velcro laying around, so I had to use nylon ties. The button switches I had were missing the nuts, so I used some hot glue, as long as I had it out to do the grille mod! :yup:

I found this thread recently and gave the mod a try. My first attempt did not turn out that great. I used the cheap thin speaker wire from Radio Shack to make the connection from the opener to the button. The garage would not open every time I pushed the button and I would have to access the opener that was tucked away.
Yesterday, I took off the crap speaker wire and soldered 18 ga wire instead and now the garage opens everytime I push the button.

my crappy remote is clipped on the side of my glovebox hanging on the inside... works ok, so i just open glovebox press button and close glovebox, but my remote seems to be dying , it dosnt have the distance it used to even wiht fresh battery, i may do a mod placing the remote in the upper plastic "cup" to teh left of the drivers visor and run the wire down somewhere.

There is a gap in the foam around the drivers side roll bar, if you unzip the cover place your remote back in the gap, zip the cover up. Viola hidden remote button and easy to get to when you need to replace the battery. Hidden so no one knows where it is. Works great, there was a thread on this a while back.

I put mine up behind the plastic along the driver's A pillar. There's room enough for the opener to fit behind. You just put your finger where the open hole is. Out of the way, and I can take the opener out fairly easy if need be.

I actually bought all the stuff to hard-wire buttons about 6 months ago. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Ive read somewhere that people were stealing the door opener, getting into the glove box to read the address off the registration, then coming back at a later time to rip the place off (Bastards). Something to think about especially when the tops off! I did mine a few months ago, works great, no one knows its even there.

I was going to also mention this as an alternative. My opener doesn't fit in that location, but it does fit above the b-pillar, where there is another gap in the foam.

Put it in a ziploc baggie so it is waterproof then never worry about it after you put it behind your rollbar padding.

My garage door mod.
I have a liftmaster rolling code and simply took two wires from a Cat5 cable soldered them to the button I wanted on the bottom side of the remote then drilled a small hole in the liftmaster to run the wires out of.
Then I took my $2.49 momentary switch from Radio Shack and drilled from the bottom above the vent control. Makes a very nice hiding spot.
I left the garage remote in the glove box for easy access for battery changes.

I'm not sure its a good idea to get your garage door opener power from the sigarette lighter(My opener only runs on 3 volts). Here is another way to do it:

uses the same relay as you would for wiring up your lights.

Installed my garage opener today. Took me longer to solder the wires to the remote than it did t owire it and install the button. I got the push button switch at Radio Shack (can I say that) and had the wire in the garage. Minus the cost of the remote that I have had for 6 years, it cost me less than $3.25.

I took my opener and hooked it up to my high beams using a few small components. Its powered off a switched 12v wire out of the fuse box, goes to a relay, and then the relay is activated by the high beam wire. There is a capacitor to make the relay momentary so that the remote only stays on for a second if I leave my high beams on. Works great!

Previously I have always kept my remote in the net under the AC controls. I took the clip off the back so it sits flat and it is all black so it isn't that conspicuous. I worried for a while about someone seeing it but my wife can't even find it there and I told here where it is.
Adding the button to the dash and especially the idea to wire it to the switched ignition is great. I think I will have to try this for my next weekend project..
