Changing the brake fluid

My local mechanic is telling me my brake fluid is bad. I'm thinking he might be right. The fluid looks pretty dark and smells kinda funny.
The thing is, I'm not sure how much oil it's going to take. I'm pretty sure the clutch and brakes share the same system, right? :thinking: So, would this be something my local mech. can do or is it something I need to take to the Chrysler service center? (which, I might add, is a real PITA over here in Korea)

They do NOT share the same oil. You need brake fluid. Any service center should be able to flush the brake fluid. You might want to stick with a good brake shop.

Yes the brakes and clutch master cylinder do share the same fluid reservoir.

I think you're right, I thought the same thing. Do you know how many quarts it takes to change the fluid completely?

I have never changed the brake fluid in anything, my last truck i sold at 140,000 and it still had the same fluid.

I had my XJ for 14 years and 186,000 miles. Never changed the brake fluid.
The right thing to do, especially with newer ABS systems, is to change the fluid every two years, whether it looks like it needs it or not. It's easy to do, and will avoid corrosion problems in the future.

I think it was around 2 or 3 pints.
