View Full Version : My JK Saddle Bags

I needed more space to throw all my crap so I came up with an idea to make saddle bags for that dead space on the console. I just test drove it with the top off and it stays secure. I used a couple of those 3M stickys underneath just to be sure.
I just took computer paper and layed it on the console to make the pattern. Just cut and trim until the paper fits, do the same for the side bags. Add a seam allowance when cutting the fabric and sew.

Great Idea! :yup: thanks for the pics.
i have some material that is the exact same as the soft top material that i think i will use to make one of these. I made a window roll from it as well and am in the process of working on a soft top boot.

You made me realize I didn't describe the material I used. What I used was almost as heavy as the soft top material. It should be a heavy weight canvas type or upholstery material otherwise it won't have enough body and weight to it and it will flop around and not lay correctly. I even chose to line the pockets just for cushion and added weight.

Is there any sort of weighting (other than the items you store in there) or will "fly-away" be an issue with doors- & top-off driving?

I don't want to get kicked off the forum....as I understand it that is a big No, No...otherwise I would.

I used three of those 3M sticky tabs...you know the kind that come with the hooks that have the "clean release" tab. I put one on the top of each bag attached to the side of the console and I put one under the flat cloth on top of the console. I took it for a spin with the top off and nothing in the bags and it stayed put.
By the way, for fabric questions....I bought a grill cover from Wally World made out of Denier Endura tearproof waterproof fabric. I just tore the grill cover apart and have made a bunch of stuff out of it for the JK. I made Freedom Top Bags out of it that are super strong. They have black, green, and khaki color choices. A good buy if you are making other stuff from it too, it would make a great boot cover or rollbag.

i happened across it at the local hancock fabric store one day and there was a table full of remnants about 5 yards each. At the time it was on sale for 30% off so it was right around $3.50 a yard. I couldn't believe i found the same exact material. i've been to a couple other hancocks and they didn't have it. they still have a bunch of it. i think $5 a yard.

Went and checked out a Hancock fabric today and picked up some of that vinyl. I got a 1 1/4 yard remnant for under $5! It is just a bit thinner than my softtop. Sweet!
Now, if I can just figure out the sewing machine.....

Nope...I never got around to doing the window roll bag. Haven't had time.
The freedom panel bag came out great but no, I didn't do a write up. I figured most people were ordering the ready made ones ayway. If anyone is interested I could do a write up. Don't know how many sewers we have out there.

I'm terrible at sewing (I'm a guy, after all) but after seeing your idea and the idea for the center-console saddle bags, I went out to Wallymart and bought some nice gray denim to match my interior... and I have a wife to sew for me! :D
Point being: I don't know how many forum members themselves are into sewing, but I know a lot of us are married, and have "sewing resources" available to us. ;) So, a write-up would be cool IF you have the time someday.

I dunno, not a very good Idea. First, the majority of women don't respect tools, to so before he would taxidermy her, his tools would be all messed up. Second, you wouldn't want a daily reminder of the woman that ruined so many years of your life would you?????
