View Full Version : Garage door opener solution.

i found a perfet place to hide the garage door opener...

if you unzip the driver sider rollbar (the one connecting the soundbar to the windshild) there is a place where the foam padding is cut out. my garage door opener fit perfectly in the cutout. zip it shut and you cant even tell its in there.

i just hit the fabric on the outside and open-ses-a-me. works great.

You get my vote for best free mod for 2007 so far. This worked great for me also, and it is completely hidden with zero modifications. Larger remotes would have a problem doing this, but the small size openers will be fine.

I tucked mine under the corner of the seat cover, towards the inside edge. Again if you have a large opener then it will not work that great.

i currently have mine clipped on the inside of the glovebox. (hidden of course)

I will need to check out this padding in the rollbar and try to tuck it in there

I have kids. They leave the damn thing open all the time. Who needs an opener?

I'm going to have to check out the roll bar spot. Right now I've got mine velcroed to the back side of the visor. It works well, but not secure enough.

This sounds like a great solution, but I checked on mine, and the foam is one solid peice from front to back. Don't suppose you would post a pic of what it looks like under the zipper?

I checked it out as well. There is a small opening closer to the back of the door when you're sitting in the jeep. Unfortunately it's a little too small for my clickers..oh well. If you got a small one its good ;)

Being a newbie jeep owner I didn't even think about this til I got my Jeep, but I found a good place up where the roll bar meets the top left corner of the windshield. There's a nice gap on top of the roll bar in that corner, and it might even be big enough for larger openers.

I found the spot, but opted not to use it, only because with the doors off, the remote can still be seen.
BUT, what i did do, is use my smaller remote (but this would work for larger ones also).
I took the foam pad out, traced the profile of my remote into the foam. Cut the foam out to accomodate the the thickness of the remote. Set the remote in the space, and secured it with some electrical tape.

Once everything is is put back together, locate where the push button is at under the roll bar cover and indiscretly mark it. I used one of my daughter's glitter glue pens. Now its hidden, and I LIKEY!!!

I'm super happy with my switches that I added to the right of the steering column...just soldered them to my opener. Works excellent! But putting behind the pad isn't a bad idea for a non-permenant solution.

does anyone else have problems with the remote not transmitting properly? when i place my remote in this spot it doesn't open the door every time. i have to be practically in front of the garage, and sometimes i even have to open the drivers side door a crack before it transmits to the garage door opener. maybe mine is just particularly weak, but it works fine under normal use, like when clipped to the sun visor.

Might be time to check the batteries. Both mine work from down the street in this spot. Excellent idea by the way!:yup:

I had the same problem, so I mounted the opener above the windshield pillar on the driver side. ran a wire down front window pillar to swith on dash. works good now.

My remote was a little big for the spot on the side, but I went back just a little further to the corner where the side meets the center bar (just in front of the speaker). It fits on top and doesn't seem to cause an obvious bulge. Works like a charm from there.

I had the same problem, it wouldnt work half the time unless right in front of the door, and even then it didnt work all the time.
When its out and in my hand, it works from two houses down the street, so I know its not the batteries.

I ended up finding a spot in the driver side seat, its behind the fabric on the side of the seat, by the e-brake.
There is a little void area there and it doesnt buldge the seat out, It works fine there and I dont have to reach up to open the door ;)

mine works better in this location than it did when it was hooked to the cupholders, at least 100 feet away it works fine. before i had to be in the driveway.

Well I read all thru this thread and still tried to clip my opener on the passenger visor... First left I took the thing went flying, man! Well, lucky I hadn't dropped the top yet, eh? Could have hit an old lady or somethin...

Anyways, the 'under-the-roll-bar-padding-open-ses-a-mee' trick works great! Love it. I put mine right behind the driver's head, as there was more room. My remote has been carbon dated to the Wilson administration and is slightly smaller than an encyclopedia...:D

I put mine in the roll bar several months ago and I am so use to it now I just reach up out of reflex with out any thought and hit the button. Nobody else knows where it is and it is totally invisable.

This is a great thing since I run aroiund with out the top on all summer.

This worked great for me. I opted to put it at the back corner near where the side roll bar meets the sound bar.

Thanks for the idea, I got tired of having to remember to unlock the center console everytime to get the remote out before I started the Jeep to head home.

All I have to say is just make sure then that you don't use your garage as a "storage unit " for anything you want stolen. Use it for what it was intended for , your vehicles that are insured.

Most people here in So Cal don't know what a garage is for (probably because most people here in So Cal aren't from So cal). They use it as a big storage container than they park their cars on the street in front of my house because they usually have 5 cars , 2 of which are broken down in the driveway. Thus making the neighborhood look like a freeking Brooklyn street ( and this is a good middle class neighborhood). Oh and don't forget the boats too, used 2 times a yr and rotting in the sun the rest.
:naw:

Sorry, back to the topic. :)

i use my garage to store my jeep. so you would have to be in the garage to get access to the garage door opener. now they could come to my work and take it, although i would notice it as soon as i got home and couldnt get in the garage.

either way... i used to keep it in the jeep (at the cupholders) and this is more out of sight than it was before.

the furthest they are going to get is the garage anyway not my house... please come steal my lawnmover... i need to get a new one anyway

At the risk of making a simple fix more complex: I mounted mine under the roll bar cover on the side, just behind the drivers head as suggested here. Good solution but I was constantly having to fuss around to get the button to work. Here's a fix for those who want a more obvious actuator.
First I cut a smal hole in the roll bar cover and put a grommet in it to keep it from tearing. I then super-glued a rubber donut washer to the opener button. I then inserted a short piece of metal rod snugly into the donut washer.
Now I just reach over my shoulder, feel the unobtrusive metal rod (it extends about 1/8" beyond the roll bar cover) and easily operate the opener.

Just put my opener up here and it works great. I have been complaining for months about the lack of convenient space for the opener and just couldn't bring myself to spend $239 for the Bestop overhead console (although I have almost pulled the trigger about 20 times). Thanks for the idea!:)

Perfect! I don't know why I didn't think of it. I never liked leaving my garage door opener on the visor where anyone could get to it (and potentially get into my garage where all of my toys are kept). It would frustrate the heck out of me, having to dig for it in my center compartment. Now its always right where I need it, and hidden to boot. Great, simple solution to a stupid annoyance.

I went with the radio shack push button switch solution - this is the second vehicle I have used this solution on.

Take apart the opener and solder on the switch. Drill hole in Jeep dash on horizontal surface beneath heater vents. Insert switch where it's completely hidden. Run wires down toward drives foot well behind dash. Take your opener components and wrap them and battery with thin packing foam and use a rubber band to keep them together - the foam will prevent them from rattling around. Tuck them behind the dash toward the right of the footwell.

Works like a charm and you can't see the push button from inside or outside the vehicle. I should probably tell the wife where it is in case she needs to use the Jeep ;)

Quick update: Project worked fine but I was not getting the range I would have liked to so today I relocated the transmitter (kept switch in the same location as the picture) from near the footwell to a higher location. I realized the vents come out easily so that's where my transmitter is now located: pop out the vent and the transmitter is inside the dash and to the left of the vent. Makes changing the battery easy and I get a lot better range now.

I used the Smittybuilt sport bar cell phone holder. I have one of those old school openers that are pretty big, so my options were limited. It stays put and is out of the way. It is also easy to remove without leaving a adhesive residue behind.
