rear diff hot!!

i just drove through town and back home...maybe 10 miles max distance and crawled under my rig when i got back to look at something. When i placed my hand on the rear diff to pull myself under a little it was extremely hot..right on the point of to hot to touch. I wouldn't think something with oil in it got that hot (besides an engine of course) is this normal??? or do i have something really wrong here? an anyone else check theirs after a short trip?

What was the outside temp...if it is 110 outside everything is hot to the touch

Operating temp for something with gears is HOT. I'm sure it's normal. Still wouldn't hurt to check the gear oil.

pretty normal to be hot to the touch after a reasonable run of even 10 miles

Mine was warm-hot to the touch after 10 miles when I changed them. And that was when it was slushy and 20*. If you were driving with a heavy foot, I would imagine it would be plenty hot after 10 miles.

Techenical question, was it evenly hot all over or was it hotter in spots and if it was what were the spots it was hotter?

It should not be too hot to touch.

Hi,

after driving 100 miles on the German autobahn with an average of 80 mph I measured the rear diff with a laser temperature gauge directly on the diff. cover - outside temp. was 73 °F - the temperature is 158 °F - the same after driving 15 miles on normal roads - no difference at all !

The used diff. oil can be up to 200 °F without any problem !
