Well, I'm new at this wheeling stuff, but I'm trying to do it right from the start. My friend tells me a CB is a must for off-road, so I'm hoping you guys would suggest some brands and models. I don't mind making an investment. My thinking has always been buy it once and keep it a long time.

Would you recommend the Tuffy Overhead Compartment? http://www.quadratec.com/products/14134_21_07.htm Anyone bought one yet?

Thanks!

Go to the "JK Electronics & Sound Systems" part of the forum and search on Cobra. Great thread on CB's. :yup:

I put my CB over the rearview mirror and it's great! No need for a console. Took off the header cover and taped the wires behind.

If you want a basic CB and don't want it stolen, the Tuffy overhead console is great.

If you want a CB that has all the bells & whistles (talkback, clarifier, side band, weather channel, etc, etc), then it probably won't fit. For some reason, Tuffy made their box portion of this extremely shallow and most CB's with the large chassis & extended knobs make it too long to fit in the box....

Sure, it fits head units fine, but most people won't be putting their head units up there, IMHO.

But, for a basic CB, it'll work great.

I phoned Tuffy last week and asked if I could custom order an overhead console with a 13" box...they didn't want anything to do with it. She said they won't do custom orders, but would pass along my comments.

So, I've been trying to come up with a way to put a metal "wrap" (for lack of a better description) over my CB that bolts in, effectively not allowing a thief to yank out my CB, which is mounted on top of my dash.

When I come up with something, I'll post pics.

I'd gladly replace the stock radio, but need the AUX input, so don't see anywhere else, except the top of the dash maybe. I have the Tuffy center console, so could mount it in there, but then _using_ it might be problematic. :-)

I was eyeing this one (haven't shopped around for price yet, so this may not be the cheapest on the net):

What do you think? Is this a good combination of features? It looks like it would fit the overhead, but I sent Tuffy an e-mail to make sure. Then again, some people don't like overhead consoles, so I'm looking for alternatives too... And those overhead corners look mighty sharp for the head... :-)

I found these on Quadratec, which might help:

I got a portable CB on Ebay a few years ago for use on the trails just to keep in touch with everyone in the group. Added a Cobra mag mount antenna that I also got on Ebay. Total investment was about $55. When it is not in use everything is stored in the back of the JK in the hidden storage compartment.
I used this setup on my KJ but now that I don't have a roof to put the antenna on, I stick it on the Mopar spare tire bike rack. Works for me when I need it.

I went with a Cobra 75WXST. Mounted it under the driver's seat. When not in use, you wouldn't know it was there...

It's not a bad unit at all. I still have a Uniden with very similar features that I used to use almost all the time.

You may also want to consider this unit:

I am a big fan of Galaxy units. That radio, with a "peak & tune" job for around $20, is IMHO the best bang for the buck out there.

i got a ranger mounted by gear shift passenger side & external speaker mounted on other side of gear shift drivers side. export radio am/ssb/cw/fm just go to your local truck stop they should have some popular brands with antennas and mounts. run power wires thru firewall with heavy ga. wire don't go with cheap here if your running power fuse close to battery and radio . you can connect to your power cig. lighter but you might get some dirty power there and noise will result. i would use a top loaded antenna with tunable tip or wire wound you gotta ck your swr after installing so you might want a radio with built in swr meter. swr is everything so you must make good connections at coax, grounds, mounts, antenna, radio. galaxy makes a good radio also as mentioned. 10-4 ....:D

Thats what I have in mine. All in one and I can remove it or hide it.

I have my antenna mounted to the backside of the rear license plate. Looks really good in my book.

...you might want to check out the cooltechllc (google) mount and antenna and couple it w/the cobra all-in-one hand held unit...

I've had no problems with mine, but I have one of the more unpopular mounts which require drilling. My SWR has been a constant 2.1 or so at full power, which isn't great, but I can live with it.

yeah im having the same high swr. if i run a mag mount then the swr drops to a dramatically. with full power on my connex i get too much modulation unless i use the mag mount.
