Still not sure how indepth this will be.

I have yet to decide on a few items...:dontknow2:...

Either way, the tear down started today, 28JULY2009!!!
Today also marks that the JK is actually a full 2 weeks old.

The initial tear down will take it down far enough for a new coat of paint and Linex'ing of the tub. Of course more will come off if the "transplant" takes place.

Here is the mod list that WILL be done:
- Flat olive drab paint
- Linex tub
- Woods evap relocation
- Cutting of fenders front and rear.
- a lift (at least 2.5 - but.....)

Mod's that MAY be done:
- 6.1 Hemi Transplant (waiting on some info from SLC)
- A lift (thinking RE 4.5 LA)
- tom woods 1350 driveshafts.

Today I completed the following:
- removed doors
- removed hood
- removed wipers
- removed wiper cover
- pulled the rear carpet
- pulled the sub woofer
- removed grille
- removed front plastic fenders

I only got about 2 hours of work done on it. It will be slow going as I have a 3 year old that loves to "help" out!!! i let her as much as possible, but still, this will take a lot of time away from the build. Along with the fact that 90% will be done completely by myself!
To further push my build time back, I am active duty Navy and so is my wife. She is currently in Afghanistan, so I am playing single dad.
My deadline is the beginning of September though, I leave to virginia for training for 2 months and have no intentions of leaving with a half completed project!!

I hope to keep this updated daily with progress, but I know I will lose several days when it goes to the paint shop and also another day at the linex shop.

More to come tomorrow after I get off work..........

nothing to exciting today:

- Removed rear plastic bumper
- removed rear plastic fenders
- removed windshield brackets
- removed windshield wiper motor
- pulled out the remaining carpet
- removed door hinges
- removed hood hinges
- removed plastic from interior

Only had about an hour today, but I have all next week off, so lots should be done next week......hoping to have it back from paint and the linex shop by friday.....although that may be pushing it.......:dontknow2:

Hoping to hear back from SLC tomorrow.......

Paint guy wont be able to take any parts until friday.......:naw:

30JUL2009

Removed the following:
- front bumper
- front metal fenders
- roll bar padding
- front windshield - unsure how to remove windshield from frame...:dontknow2:
- plastic interior trim

Going to be a couple days before I get back at it.......

Need to remove:
- door trims
- tail gate and trim
- front and rear seats
- console
- license plate holder
- rear tail lights
- gas cap trim
- seat belts
- prolly more......

I'll post pics again once all this is done and it's ready to go to the paint shop.

Desert tan JK:

I like it.....but it's not the "awesomeness" that I was hoping that it was going to be:thinking:

I like OD JK's better:

I've seen the J8's and agree that the tan looks a little strange on them. I had a member of another forum photoshop an AEV JK to make it look tan. This might give you some ideas.

The tub is ready to go to the paint shop.......

Got an impact driver saturday night.....:ya:.......would have saved literally hours of work if I had gotten it at the beginning of this build....:sad2:

Left to do:
- Remove everything from all four doors
- remove hardware from tail gate
- window from frame (guy will be here monday morning)
- window frame hardware

Things that i have to replace:
- One torx bolt for the passenger side seat belt, I stripped it out
- plastic cover for the antenna
- prolly going to replace a ton of the plastic clips throughout the entire Jeep

Then everything can get over to the paint shop.....Hopefully this will be completed tomorrow.

I will post pics up of the tub tomorrow as well, as I finished at the last bit of light and my phone sucks at pics in fading light...the wife has camera while deployed.....

RubiConvict's OD Jeep was actually one that I ran across right after I purchased my paint......It was motivational to see the effort and the attention to detail that was put into it:thumbsup:

Somewhere on jk-forum is also the thread where he spray painted it with the OD. Great thread and I knew immediately upon seeing that Jeep, that I had chosen a winner.

---Thanks for the info on the RE 4.5 LA. I was planning on the Tom woods 1350's cause of the possible Hemi......and if the Hemi never comes to fruition, I will have spend an extra 400 bucks for the piece of mind of 1350's!!!

One thing I would consider is to get the Benchmark Evap Skid instead of relocating it, as it would not void your warranty, but still protect the evap canister.

Woods has stated multiple times that relocating it will not void any warranty...and if it does HE will cover it. He's pretty sure about his relocating kit he offers.

Well......it's now the 4th of Aug. 7 days into the project.

Jeep and all parts to be painted are at the shop.

I worked today on the door hinges, tailgate hinges and the window hinge. Got all those Duplicolor bedlined. They look really great compared to the half painted hinges that I pulled off.

Prolly be early next week before I get the Jeep back...:sad2:

The big step today is that I am no longer tearing it down anymore:ya:

All work from this point forward is going to be putting it back together........I think I am going to wait a week or so after its together to start the lift.....still undecided on the 6.1:dontknow2:

steelefx4
08-06-2009, 05:36 PM
Nothing new going on, but a change in paint was required.

I had the paint shop spray one of the windshield mounts (luckily!!!), color came out a baby sh** yellow/mustard color!!.....I was like WTF!!! so i drove up to TCP global and they remixed it for me.....decided to have them reshoot the same piece, pretty much the same result...I am seriously dissapointed in both the quality of personnel working at TCP as well as their products!!! There paint chips show one thing, and the paint is something completely different!!!

Low and behold, I ended up getting 2 gallons of MILSPRAY 383. This should work out much better than that other crap..........

Ordered the RE 4.5 LA w/ monotubes this morning. Supposed to be here in a week or so.........not too worried about it, cause I am going to be taking a brek before I start the lift anyhow.....

Waiting on ecsvin.com to get back to me on the new stickers for the VIN, Tire info, emissions, color info, and a mercury warning sticker.....all total from this place will prolly be $200 bucks...:eek2:

Barring any further complications, the total paint job will be running me about $1800. (including the MILSPRAY 383 and all the new stickers)

Some things have changed since the last post:

Behind my initial schedule cause of the paint issue:naw:

Here is the plan for the coming week:

- Friday: the tub is supposed to be back from paint, will post pics
- Friday: start on lift (have to work this weekend, so giving myself extra time here)

- Monday: lift/driveshafts completed(hopefully!)....relocate evap....install OBA....also everything but the doors are supposed to be back from paint, so get front fenders, hood, windshield and grill installed....also have to install plastic fender flares and chop them

- Tuesday: decide on 35's or 37's:dontknow2:(Toyo open country MT's - wheels are Raceline RT233 beadlocks 17x9.5)***Stockers will be for sale....separated and without TPMS....1500 miles, all 5, spare still has whiskers***

- Wednesday: Line-X

- Saturday: OR FAB rear tire/can carrier

- Sunday: EVO C gussets and front/rear skids....JKS front/rear track bar braces

I will keep this thread updated along the way......

Regear to 5.38's will be in the near future. Might wait until i get back from VA in November though......who needs MPG?:rotflmao2:

Not to hijack the thread, but I too have a r/e 4.5" la kit (installed a year ago) and haven't had any problems. Wondering if you read any of the posts on this board and what led you to select that particular lift.

Thanks,

steelefx4
08-14-2009, 01:10 PM
I chose the RE LA fo rthe main reason that I had this lift on my last Jeep, a 2006 TJ Rubicon(stolen over a year ago:naw:)...had tri-link rear too:sad2:.....I know its a completely different animal, but similar in certain aspects too.

I chose to go long arm, because, like 99% of the jeeps out there, it will be driven more on the street than offroad. Ride quality on my TJ was superb:thumbsup:

Although a little more expensive than some other options out there, I really like the RE LA Lifts.

Teraflex 6" LA was another option, but I have not had any experience with Teraflex. With that being said, everyone running Teraflex's lifts likes them and generally don't have complaints.

I am not sure if 5.5 springs are available from RE for the JK, but it was a simple swap on the TJ(shocks and springs)......and you were up another 1+, which would easily put me up there with the Tera 6" LA......

A couple things I would have liked to see with a 3k+ lift though:

1. A nice Skid plate: The RE LA for the TJ had an awesome replacement skid that worked great:wink:.....there might be reasons this was not done, but a couple more steps to the instruction for a whole skid plate would not bother me one bit:thumbsup:

2. After reading the stories of broken track bar mounts, why not make that a part of the lift? Cheaper lifts have the braces already!!! And are well integrated into the design and clean install of the lift.

Just my $.02.........

Tub will be at my house tomorrow so i can start on the lift........apparently some f*cktard at the shop didn't pay attention to me and taped over the VIN sticker on the driver door jam.....long story short, they are peeling it off and going to sand and repaint that area.

I am leaving work early today to go take a few pics........I will post them up a little later on today

Well, hopefully things start moving along a little faster...should have everything but the doors back on monday, and hopefully the lift will be completed either monday night or tuesday.

Wheels and tires will be NLT tuesday.

I am scheduling an appointment with Line-X for wed.

Today I put the door hinges and hardware back on the tub as well as putting all the roll bar padding, covers and speakers back up on the roll bar.

Pulled the skids off so I can get the RE crossmember on tomorrow.

Are you going to have the rear wheel wells done in line-x? I think it would look better than putting the liners back in. You have me wanting to do my Jeep in OD or a darker flat tan (I think the tan J8 looks goofy because it's gloss and isn't dark enough) now too, but I don't have the time, money or energy to do so.

CRAZYNOVA:

The liners won't be going back in the fender wells........I am planning on getting them Line-X'd, that's why they are white! I didn't want to waste the paint on an area that was going to be covered up.....

I do need to get the forward pinch seam trimmed before it goes though, so it'll fit the 37s without rubbing.

For all the paint questions:

MILSPRAY 39094 paint @ 189/gallon
sand and sprayed @ 800
broken clips, stripped bolt and plastic cover for antenna @ 50
New decals(vin, emissions, tire loading and mercury warning) @ 200

This could be done for around 1200-1400 with ease......could prolly paint it yourself with a compressor and an HVLP gun.....if it was any other kind of paint, I personally wouldn't do it, but with it being completely flat paint, it's hard to mess up the paint job.

I ended up paying a total of about 1800....had to pay rush shipping on the MILSPRAY paint after I bought crappy paint from TCP global(150 or 200 can't really remember).

When all is said and done, I'll be about 11-12k deep(or about 18-20K if I had someone do all the work for me:eek2:)......all of a sudden I completely comprehend what JEEP is short for:rotflmao2:

man its looking good.

you have a really good vision and its great to see you carrying it through.

A+

Jeep should wake up and offer OD, a darker flat tan (darker then the J8 as noted earlier) and matte black along with the Line-X.
Smurf blue? WTF? c'mon.

looking forward to more...

It's finally starting to take shape. I have a few things left to finish up, but they are relatively easy in the big scheme of things:

i am using this thread kind of like a tracker, so there are several of these lists floating through here........keeps me .....and i can't lose it in the mess that has become of my garage!

Going to Off Road Evolution to get the following done:
- 5.38's
- C gussets
- Front and rear control arm skids
- 44 magnum tube sleeves
- JKS front track bar brace
- JKS rear track bar brace(don't think this will work with the new RE rear track bar relocation bracket...may be up for grabs shortly)
- install front and rear driveshafts
- install RE drag link......have to ream out stock fittings to 3/4"...don't have a reamer and they are like 100 bucks....cheaper to have ORE do it while it's there.

Before going to Linex:
- hood, windshield wiper cover, complete the other 3 doors
- finish scraping out insulation on tub floor

- Line-X inside...thinking about doing the whole lower portion on the sides of the tub and doors, maybe a straight line from bumper to bumper......similar to a two tone paint job, but with linex...grille and entire tailgate is getting Linex'd too......

After Linex:
- OR-F rear tire/can carrier
- Install grill, front bumper(still need to chop it)
- install all interior

LOVE it, but the shiny wheels don't fit the theme.
OD green those and the arms too and it's there!

As others have stated this is a sweet jeep.
In my opinion don't do the linex at all on the outside.....
At least not where you are talking about. At the
most I would do the grill.

My 2 cents worth

my thought process IRT the Linex on the lower panel of the tub, was more for protection from rocks and debris........lots of members have issues with the stock rubi sliders not having the coverage to stop rocks from pelting the side of the Jeep.

I am thinking of doing just the rocker panel of the tub (none on the doors).....I think it will look like the Evo rock skins

Any other inputs on this?

yea just do the rockers that will be alot nicer looking and still protect

i believe that would look pretty good as well. my biggest thing on the way you originally wanted to line x straight across was that i thought it would look funny if you ever went doorless.

keep the pics coming.....im in love with your jeep. the "boss" told me that as soon as i finish the kitchen cabinets i too can paint the jeep. i'm gonna go with coyote tan.

Unfortunetely I have to take several days off from working on the jeep.

Brother is having surgery, so I am going to go hang out with the family for a few days.....

I will post updates prolly early next week.

No pics for this post, but they will be soon!

The jeep is finally at the Linex shop, should be done tomorrow sometime....

Once back from Linex, I'll be putting back in the interior...and then it'll be off to OffRoad Evolution for the 5.38 gears, alignment and axle reinforcements.....

Still have the ORF carrier and the OBA that I will need to put on, but most likely those are going to be waiting until after I get back from training in VA....

I WILL POST PICS ASAP after it's back from LineX

Where are you training in VA??? This is seriously one of my favorite builds thus far. I'm purchasing the same tires as you in a couple of weeks....and love the Olive Drab. I'm painting the bodywork on my Cafe'd out CB750 Olive Drab and making everything else flat-black.

I agree, the OD flat paint, black hinges, and shiny wheels:eek2:

IMO, black or OD or OD green wheel with black ring would be sick or vise versa.

The Jeep is badass though reguardless.

For the Linex, i went a little overboard and the Linex guy pointed out a couple spots that might be trouble......so I took his advice and had him remove the rear bumper and he shot all behind the bumper and continued the line all the way forward to the front fender well......

Also, the grille and the tailgate are f'in awesome!!!

Total the Linex is going to run 900 or so.....that was having the guy scrape out the insulation on the rear floor boards and rear cargo....left in the front stuff for extra protection from road noise and heat....

The guy at the Linex shop couldn't have been more helpful.....he was the second Linex shop I went to, the first was completely crap and they were pretty much a holes about the whole thing.....this guy listened to everything that i wanted, told me what he could do, exactly how it would turn out, everything.....wasn't rushing me through just to make a few bills.....He will get my business again.....
