USAA, an insurance company, has filed a lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) claiming that a 2009 Wrangler caused a massive 2013 wildfire in California, as highlighted in a recent CarComplaints report.

According to the insurance company, the defective Jeep burned over 7,000 acres, 122 homes, 29 other structures, and 66 vehicles in the 2013 San Diego fire known as the Chariot Fire.

Unlike recent reports of some Jeeps catching on fire in rear end crashes, this USAA lawsuit claims the Wrangler caught on fire from a defective skid plate design that spurred the recall of the 2010 Wrangler.

The report claims the 2013 San Diego fire was ignited by the 2009 Jeep’s catalytic converter, exhaust system, engine block, and other parts of the Jeep when the driver of the Wrangler drove the Jeep through some high, dry brush.

The Jeep was supposedly owned and licensed by the government as a vehicle for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, which makes this one even more complicated.
