To say that Jeep has been important to Chrysler would be a huge understatement.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ (FCA) recent sales numbers over the past year or so provide some indication of how vital Jeep is to the global brand. But according to Bob Lutz, the nameplate could have easily traveled a very different route, as highlighted in an Automotive News report.

And he certainly would know. The longtime, highly-respected auto exec actually served as president of the Chrysler Corporation when the company purchased American Motors in 1987.

“We acquired an iconic brand which had been undernourished,” Lutz told Automotive News. He went on to say that one of the first big moves for Jeep was adding the Grand Cherokee to the lineup in 1992.

One of the biggest mishaps? The Jeep Compass, because it was the wrong vehicle for the brand at the time.
