Car hacking is a much bigger concern these days than it was in the past. As cars become more and more computerized — and share the same network — they become much more susceptible to people who want to do harm. It seems the harm done here as a result of hacking is the thief was able to steal the car. The vehicle in question is a Jeep Wrangler.

While the security footage doesn’t completely show, it appears most of the work done to steal this Wrangler comes from an attached laptop computer. The alarm goes off for several minutes while the thief works away. Finally, we see the Jeep put into reverse and the thief drives it down the street.

According to our friends at Roadshow who shared the video from the Houston Police Department, FCA’s response doesn’t address this particular vehicle, but that they take security seriously.

While this video is scary, it’s important to keep a few things into perspective. First of all, the hacker had to have physical access to the vehicle. If you talk to any security expert, they’ll tell you that once someone has physical access to your system, it’s game over.

In fact, there were other security systems in place that were ignored by the neighborhood, including the car’s own alarm system that was going off. This hack was not completed remotely. The hacker had to spend precious time in the cabin working away.

Wranglers sell really well, so it makes sense people would want to steal them. Stay safe out there, friends.
