Jeep is modernizing the iconic Jeep Wrangler in 2018, and the big rumor is that the next generation JL will not have a manual transmission option. While Jeep will not confirm specifications on upcoming models, it seems they are posing the question to customers on whether this feature should remain or be relegated to the annals of history.

The JL Wrangler’s powertrain has been tentatively confirmed. It will get a fuel-saving 2.0-liter turbo engine option and an upgraded version of the current Pentastar V6. Both will pair to a new Chrysler-built 850RE eight-speed automatic transmission. The 3.0-liter VM Motori diesel, which is featured in half-ton Ram trucks and the Jeep Grand Cherokee, is also expected to be an option. This option will be paired with a new ZF-made 8HP75 eight-speed automatic transmission.

Details pertaining to a manual transmission look noticeably absent. Perhaps that is an indication in and of itself.

Jalopnik attended a public “Q&A Session” recently where Jeep execs raised the following questions to current and hopefully future customers: “How do you feel about no manual transmission option? Would you be interested in a 3-speed transfer case? Are you okay with not having a windshield that folds down? What about a hybrid power plant option? How much towing capacity and payload should the 4-door have?”

While the substitution of a three-speed transfer case might add flexibility off-road, we are convinced purists will raise hell and shout that Jeep should keep the stick shift.

Even though the Subaru I own has those damn flappy paddles, I am still a purist and fan boy of a stick-shift, and would always opt for a manual. There is an art in operating a manual transmission, but sadly, that art is dying as more and more automakers opt for automatic transmissions. Even when it comes to off-road vehicles. Perhaps Jeep is following suit.

What do you think of Jeep potentially discarding the manual transmission?
