Taiwanese Politician’s Funeral Procession Features Exotic Pole Dancers on Top of Jeeps

You’ve heard it said time and time again: “Just when you thought you’d seen it all, something else comes along.”

It’s an adage that grows more meaningful, the older you get. And we’ve referenced that saying here at JK Forum a lot, as it pertains to the world of Jeep. But we can’t say we’ve ever seen anything quite like this.

Taiwanese Funeral Features Jeep Parade, Pole Dancers

The idea of a pole dancer on top of a Jeep is pretty odd in itself. But the idea of 50 exotic dancers gyrating on top of Jeeps is crazy. Especially when it’s part of a politician’s funeral procession. That’s just an entirely different level of odd.

The bizarre event took place to honor a popular local councilor by the name of Tung Hsiang. The man always “enjoyed having a lively fun time,” according to a CBS News report. The funeral procession included 50 Jeeps, each one equipped with a vertical pole and an exotic dancer. You can get a better glimpse in the footage above.

As bizarre as the entire thing might seem to us here in the U.S., it’s not that unusual in Chinese and Taiwanese cultures. Unlike the more traditional services here in the states, the Chinese and Taiwanese are known for their highly-entertaining funeral services, which draw huge crowds to help celebrate a person’s life.

Although it seems that Hsiang’s celebratory procession might have outdone most to date, based on the attention it got on social media. According to a BBC report, the pole dancing processional likely grew out of an older tradition in Asia where women were paid to attend funerals as mourners.

There’s no mention, however, of why Jeeps were chosen for Hsiang’s processional.
