Next Wrangler Could Get Eight-Speed Automatic Transmission

2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara

With so many rumors swirling around about the next-generation Wrangler, it gets tough to make out exactly what kind of features the next Jeep of Jeeps will have.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) isn’t providing a lot of details on the new Wrangler planned for 2018, but it looks like the new model will be getting an eight-speed automatic transmission. That should make the JK successor more fuel-efficient.

According to an Automotive News report, FCA has filed a notice with the Securities and Exchange Commission indicating that it plans to use the eight-speed transmission paired with the engine in the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee in all of FCA’s rear-wheel-drive vehicles, except for heavy-duty versions of the Ram pickup truck and the Dodge Viper.

In fact, the trusted industry news source goes on to report that Jeep actually wanted to use the eight-speed transmission in the current JK Wrangler, which features a five-speed automatic transmission. Unfortunately, the eight-speed didn’t fit.

One thing’s for certain: I’m pretty sure a more fuel-efficient Wrangler will be a welcome addition to the line-up.
